This new version runs not 60 but 74 minutes! What's on those 14 new minutes? Well, I'm excited to tell you that two songs not on the original release are included on this new version- "Edith And The Kingpin" and "Hejira." "Edith" is totally live footage, with lots of audience shots. This track, in fact, was promised the last time that Shadows And Light was re-released (in 1989 on Warner Home Video), but although the song was listed on the box, it was not on the tape. But now we have it. "Hejira" is a real find because it appears to be Joni's first attempt at a music video. Seven minutes filmed on an ice-skating rink and featuring famous skater Toller Cranston; a young woman twirling in a bridal gown; and Joni herself skating around in her "black crow" outfit. Joni also lip-synchs a few verses from the song, just like in a regular MTV-style video. Mostly though, it's Toller ice-skating and I must admit, very beautifully. The colors on this re-release are bold and crisp, the sound is great, plus you get two brand-new tracks. What more could you want? This re-release of Shadows And Light gets my highest recommendation, and it finally answers a question I've had since 1980- why Joni credits Toller Cranston for "skates" in the opening credits. This is a very exciting discovery, folks! You can purchase this new and longer Shadows & Light from the JM.COM link to CDNOW.COM; They have it available in both laser disc and VHS formats. The laser disc version is limited in quantity, so it can take up to 8 weeks to get a copy, but it's well worth the wait. Orders for the VHS version should be much more quickly filled, as it was produced in a much larger quantity. Enjoy! Blue is one of the 12 albums described in a special article "The Best Chill-Out Albums Of All Times". Quote : " 'I want to make you feel better, I want to make you feel free', sings Joni Mitchell: Blue achieves this via sparse instrumentation and confessional lyrics couched in gorgeous melodies. A '70s bedsit staple, it was the result of a brief sabbatical, during which Mitchell travelled Europe and learnt to play the dulcimer which jangles throughout the album. Mitchell describes herself as "emotionally transparent" during its making; a state that lends Blue a tangible warmth. A solitary album, which conversely makes the listener feel less alone. Blue transports the listener to the 'dark cafés' mentioned on The Last Time I Saw Richard." Best Tracks - California, A Case Of You, The Last Time I Saw Richard. Best Moment - California's life-affirming swooping vocals and sliding pedal steel guitar. " And on the Q video pages PWWAM is one of two recommended videos (Header: "The best videos of the last three months") : " Joni Mitchell captured here at the height of her soulful jazz phase, in a special concert recorded in the round in Los Angeles. (Leonard Cohen, with a little smattering o f JC) Simon, who generously shared sections of the Leonard Cohen biography _Various Positions_ by Ira B. Nadel, forwarded: "In her lyric to "Rainy Night House," Joni Mitchell describes how she and Cohen took a taxi to his mother's house in Westmount during her absence: "she went to Florida and left you with your father's gun alone." The biography also went on to mention several details that may have been autobiographical from Cohen's two novels, _The Favourite Game_ and _Beautiful Losers_. Simon's post reminded me of a very recent memory of mine, which was inspired directly by _The Favourite Game_. It's a cliche, I know, but Montreal is surely a character in TFG as rich as any other. It's clear from the book, which was based in part on his own coming of age, that Cohen loved the city of his birth just as deeply in its way as he loved the individuals he described so memorably. There's his house, parks, the apartment he lived in with his "first mistress," Tamara, on Stanley Street--and even a bracing incident in which Cohen's alter-ego, Lawrence Breavman, and his best friend, Krantz, are subjected to anti-Semitic violence when they flirt with the "wrong" girls on the wrong side of town. In fact, Breavman and Krantz compound their woes in that scene by telling their tormentors that they are from Westmount, a section of the city I've always imagined from the book's descriptions as unremittingly upper-middle class, but more stately than Philistine, despite Cohen's implications to the contrary. So three weeks ago, when I found myself in Montreal, and had already seen Notre-Dame-Cathedral-where-Celine-Dion-got married and spent a delightful Saturday in Old Montreal after my conference ended, I left my hotel at 8 a.m. Sunday and took a metro to Westmount, making a trip alone that would have meant absolutely nothing to anyone else I was traveling with. And, while I reminded myself that the Westmount Cohen described was now a memory 50 to 60 years old, the actual scenes were much as I expected: big old houses, perhaps fallen into some disrepair, but with details and architecture that I wish I'd had more time to explore. And when I reached the large park, it was already alive by 8:30 with cyclists and walkers and folks exercising their dogs. The strip of shops right beyond that seemed pretty "yuppified," but I could somehow envision a young Leonard Cohen there, years earlier, pondering life's mysteries, gathering up the courage to speak to a striking young woman, and struggling to come to terms with his place in the world! So that's it: just a sunny Sunday with dogs and joggers and memories in Westmount. I did think of Joni (I was wearing my TTT t-shirt) although I haven't a clue as to Cohen's mother's house's address. And I also thought, even before our discussion of a possible tours of Significant Joni Places, that my fellow JMDLers would've been great companions. Mary P. P.S. Anyone else think they see just a trace of Joni in Patricia, the actress from Winnipeg? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 21:50:15 -0400 From: waytoblu@mindspring.com Subject: music and Joni Being as several people have asked me, yes, I am a musician living in Atlanta, Georgia. I sing and play guitar/piano/bass and have just released my debut cd, Tangled. If I had to describe it I would say it's kind of mellow, sort of melancholy, really interesting chords/ haunting melodies, and very picturesque, poetic lyrics. It's been compared to early Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, though it has a very poignant original sound. I discovered Joni Mitchell sometime around 1989 when I was in college in Greensboro. Someone lent me a copy of Song to a Seagull and I remember being completely mesmerized. It didn't take me long to completely immerse myself in her music. Later I formed a duo with a friend of mine, Nancy, and art major who played wooden flute, and we'd do Joni Mitchell songs and some of my originals...we did a really nice version of Little Green. Anyway, she is definately one of the major influences in my writing. I don't have any major distribution yet but if anyone is interested in checking it out I' ll leave ordering information at the end of this post. All the cover art is photographs from Cumberland Island, a wilderness island of the coast of Georgia which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Also, I'll be featured on the Nick Drake website, The Nick Drake Files, sometime in the next month. And if you live near Charleston, I'll be playing June 25 at the Moose Mountain Cafe, and June 26 at Port City Java.
