Since, I've been an avid listener, but not an incredible fan. He on the other hand is a fanatic. Unfortunately he doesn't have computer access to the many of you and your words on this site. We popped onto the site when we heard yet another runour that Joni had cancer and was dying. We still don't know the truth, but realized that Wally, the webmaster of her site has undergone chemo for something. Anywho, Hejira is inevitably my favorite, but I enjoy listening to all her work. Joni is a poet of the soul, and her music, painting and prolific wanderings have inspired so many, including the small listeners like me. We're fortunate to live in the Philadelphia area where WXPN, 88.5 from the University of Pennsylvania reveres Joni as the Goddess of her art and the mentor for many of the other progressive songwriters today. They play her often and it's like a fresh breeze to hear her emerge during the hectic pace of everyday life. I want to give the site a few days, but the last time I did this, I was spammed to death and no one was ever really saying anything. ...there's a man and a woman sitting on a rock, they're either gonna thaw out or freeze. But if you want Joni covers from Hell, the first place to start, IMHO, might be the tribute album of a few years ago, Back to the Garden (available now on Tape Tree 8). While a few cuts are tasty (I vote for Hugh Marsh et al doing "River"), most are such bizarre interpretations that they feel more like parody than tribute. The homemade JMDL tribute is a thousand times better. At 03:53 PM 6/9/99 -0500, you wrote: >- I wonder what is the worst cover of a >>Joni song ever? It's natural to want to know more about the artist, inventor, world leader, or any other person whom one admires. If Joni writes about being devastated in a relationship - sorry, but I do care enough about her as a person, to want to know more it, just as I would with anyone I cared about. If she writes about someone who has made her happy, inspired her, etc., I also want to know who this person is bringing joy to her life. We are only human and so is Joni. Kakki >> This is so well said. When I heard ablut her and Larry getting a divorce I felt really bad for her. I then was blaming Shwan Covin for the break up. I am sure she had nothing to do with it. But I was wary. After the break up didn't she come out with Turbulent Indigo? I thought she did which explains alot to me. Some of her ( and alot of artists) best music is when she is malencholy. Herjira and FTR are both like that. Lost love, feeling sad and in pain. I guess for me, since my life had alot of that saddness growing up I really identify with it. She makes me feel better hearing songs that touch me so deeply. When my old boyfriend broke up with me, I must have played Amelia a thousand times. That one line always killed me...*that sad request of me to kindly stay away*. Even as I write it now I get chills. This one line is one of the saddest lines I have ever heard in my life. She has been my voice for a long time just like Vonda Sheppard is for Ally McBeal. When I am in funk, I listen to Joni and it lifts my spirits. When I need to cry I can listen to her again and pick my favorite sad songs and let out a good long cry. She is my emotional self. I am so grateful that she was there all these years allowing me to really feel and discover who I really am! So thank you Joni! Since she has been such an inspiration in my life. I like knowing that she is happy. It makes me feel at easy and I say to myself..."Yea, I am glad you are happy again. I worry about you and want your life to be full of happiness!" I've never read "The Painted Word," but never felt that it detracted from my enjoyment of the song. My take on the Boho Dance has always been the balance between being true to what one really wants to do and what the fashionable trends might be. Trying out the trends are a terrific idea, embracing them because it's "the thing to do," pushes you close to sell-out. I see these lyrics: > >"But even in the scuffle/The cleaners press was in my jeans." as describing that push-me/pull-me. During the 60's, the non-conformists could be as constricting as the establishment they tried to escape. Dress a certain way, embrace certain values. > >The lines that confuse me most are "And you were in the parking >lot/Subterranean by your own design." I am left to wonder why this working architect >is not financially successful and what his relationship is with the Boho >dance, the romanticizing of austerity. Any insight? Is this a complete >misreading of the song? Gosh, I always took the person who was "subterranean" as being Bob Dylan. But I'm admittedly a Dylan numbskull. This whole part of the song seems to portray someone who does the sell-out in terms of embracing what is trendy because it's what everyone expects and falls so far into that pit that they no longer have any real idea who they are and how they can express themselves. >"A camera pans the cocktail hour/Behind a blind of potted palms/And >finds a lady in a Paris dress/With runs in her nylons." Here, I see less legs, (although that is a GREAT interpretation), and more one of Joni's classic portrayals of duality: a Paris dress, (ie a costly, fancy article of clothing), coupled with stockings are just don't work with the outfit. (unless, of course, the line is about Courtney Love!) > >Well those are my random and rambling thoughts about the song. I have >no conclusion, I'm just hoping to hear the views of others, and really >this is the only place I can have this conversation. I for one, enjoyed your views! From other artists, I would definitely take Carole King's Tapestry, maybe also James Taylor's Mud Slide Slim & The Blue Horizon, although there's a couple of "faster" songs on there. The alternative would be to see if they can play tapes as well, and make up your own from Joni's entire collection - which would be my preference (if it was me).
