Ken and Frank: Though it may also be the name of a place in Egypt, the moon over Mattala in the song is instead certainly a reference the moon shining over the Mattala, Crete, along the south side of the island and on the beautiful beaches of the Lybian Sea. Joni relates a number of anecdotes concerning her time with her red-haired lover Carey in concert recordings from the early 1970's, and the area around Mattala and in particular the Palace of Phaestos figure highly in those tales. best, /Pat mailto:pmead@pacbell.net CD-R, cassette & video tape trades: ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 11:57:55 +0100 From: "Paul Castle" Subject: "The Last Bar before Africa" Frank Miceli wrote > > In "Carey," Joni sings of the "mattala moon." I've searched all the > dictionaries for mattala but come up dry. Can someone help? Matala is in Crete, on the Lybian Sea on the south side of the Greek island. In 1975 I met a conga player in Winnipeg who claimed to have lived with the hippies in the coastal caves of Crete in 1970 and said he had jammed with Joni there on several occasions. I found the following on an internet search:- "Matala has a fine beach and a sheltered bay, so it is an ideal place for bathing. Semi- circular sandy beach 300 meters in length, at either end of which are the cliffs which make the cove a rather private place. These cliffs are riddled with man-made caves hacked out of the rock. Once the famous caves of Matala were the homes of the fishermen who lived here, but during the '70s they became one of the centers of the international hippie movement. Today, the caves have been fenced off by the Archaeological Service and it is forbidden to stay or spend the night in them." I see (on jonimitchell.com) that Alison LaRock from Florda visited Matila in 1984 and wrote:- "My friends and I looked for the Mermaid cafe but no luck but we found another taverna for a bottle of retsina wine that everyone drinks in Greece. Although we didn't indulge in the Greek habit of smashing our glasses on the floor that Joni describes, we followed another custom and poured a little bit of wine back to the earth to thank her for the gift. Then slowly to lie upon our sleeping bags, crushing the fragrant oregano beneath the olive trees to watch the "starry dome" and the beautiful Matala moon. It was so hard to leave . . ." To get an idea of what it looks like have a look at the pictures taken from the Lions cafe in Matala - http://www.netwave.net/members/vittoe/greece2.html I've just decided that I'm going to buy the Lions cafe, rename it The Mermaid Cafe and have all-year music and food of Jonifest proportions. Of course there will be free accommodation for bona fide JMDLers with all the hummus, taramasalata and pitta bread you can eat!! Anyone know any millionaires?? Hence: 'met a redneck on a grecian isle' (California) Don't know about Egypt. But 'the wind is in from Africa' (Carey) would be a peculiar lyric if the writer had actually been IN Africa at the time!! My JM songbook ignores Matala and has the lyric as 'the mantle o'the moon', which I always thought was odd. PX ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 09:35:03 -0700 From: "P. She says that when the two performed together in Japan this year, that Dylan "[was] pushing me off the mic. It's like he's basically dipping my pigtail in ink." Me writing now: I stole a few moments from gardening to post about this *again* because I have been preoccupied with it. I've been slightly annoyed by things that Joni has said about other recording artists, particularly women, but in this case, I *agree* that she has just cause to be miffed. I was particularly disheartened to see so much attention given to Dylan's brooding and self-indulgent Time Out Of Mind, while Taming The Tiger was hardly noticed. But this is an old story, I know. It's amazing how the most talented and brilliant men turn into spoiled little brats when confronted with a stronger and more talented woman! Good for Joni, for speaking her mind on this! It seems I play 'Hejira' more than most, lately. This morning I put on DJRD. After about a minute into the title song, Rick said "is that the Coyote song"? After explaining to him that it was a different song on a different CD, it occurred to me that there IS a very similar, repeated riff on both songs. "Coyote" begins with a riff that, at least to me, sounds almost identical to the main riff running through DJRD. I can see why he mistook one for the other. It made me smile to realize that Joni has sunk into his consciousness even though he got the songs mixed up. DJRD does sound a lot like Coyote. Has anyone else noticed how similar they are? Next week will see the release of the new version of "The End Of The Beginning". Freebo has re-sequenced the album - taken the track "The Big Chain" off the album and replaced it with a beautiful new song called "You Don't Have To Live This Way". Freebo is primarily known as Bonnie Raitt's former bass player. He played with her for 10 years and appeared on her first seven albums. He has since recorded and toured with Maria Muldaur, John Mayall, as well as The Bluesbusters, to name but a few. His first solo album, "The End Of The Beginning", has a wide range of influences - from Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne's softer moments, to the funkier side of The Meters and Little Feat. The album has a lot of famous friends helping out : Bonnie Raitt does a beautiful duet on "How Do I Say Goodbye", Paul Barrere and Sam Clayton ( of Little Feat ) guests on a couple of tracks, Jerry Donahue and Albert Lee has a couple of really GREAT duels on their guitars, Valerie Carter sings two really BEATIFUL duets on the album, and the list could just go on and on and on . . . . . For copies of his album please write Freebo at : Freebo PO Box 931420 Los Angeles CA 90093 or email Freebo at : freebo@freebo.com or check out his website at : http://www.freebo.com If you want to catch Freebo on tour in Europe with Lisa Haley & The Zydecats, you can do it here : June 2 : Club Liege, Liege, Belgium June 3 : Club Essegemblues, Brussels, Belgium June 4 : Aalborg Blues Day Fest, Copenhagen, Denmark June 5 : Aalborg Blues Day Fest, Copenhagen, Denmark June 6 : National Cajun & Zydeco Festival, Raamsdonks, Holland June 8 - 12 : Austria + Switzerland June 13 : Holland and on June 30 you can catch him at home in Los Angeles at The Mint Club, on 6010 W. I read the discussion of how significant others deal with our Joni love. My question: Why is it that some people *really* hate Joni's voice? My daughter (Chelsea: whose name I've threatened to change) and I had this discussion a couple of days ago. I will not play any Joni while she's visiting as she has always said that Joni has the most annoying voice. I was listening to HOSL tonight and I think her singing is divine! So what have you all heard from non-jonites? Is it her vibrato or what that causes this loathing? My daughter couldn't seem to put her finger on it. She admires her as a songwriter and loves her songs done by other singers. I sooooo glad I have this list so I know it's not me that has bad tastes. ;-) Hope you all in the US have a great holiday. I start grad school on Tuesday. So there will be no Jonifest for me. Maybe next summer after I have a teaching job lined up. To the faithful posters. Keep up the good work. I'll be reading.
