She says that when the two performed together in Japan this year, that Dylan "[was] pushing me off the mic. It's like he's basically dipping my pigtail in ink." As for the artist formerly known as Prince, she says he sent her a song called "You Are My Emotional Pump, You Make My Body Jump." She says she called him "and said, 'I can't sing this.' He's a strange little duck, but I like him." And she thinks things have never been worse between the sexes in the U.S.A. "I've never been a feminist--I've always been a tomboy, a companion to men--but as I get older I have more women friends," she said. "Also, things between men and women have gotten so out of line in America. Wife-battering is now a national pastime... we don't know if O. J. Simpson killed his wife but we do know that he battered her frequently and was kind of smug about it, like he was above the law. So the precariousness of my gender at this particular time was something that was hard for me to sidestep [when writing songs for the recent album, Turbulent Indigo]: precariousness in the office, in the streets, even in public swimming pools, which I talk about on [the song] "Sex Kills." - ---------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 09:33:50 -0600 From: katej Subject: joniloversonly Hi all I've read with interest the anecdotes about lovers and friends liking/disliking Joni's voice/music. My longtime dearest friend dislikes Joni to this day because, she says, back when we were roommates I played the same two Joni albums over and over again until she got sick of it. I just shrug and think she must not have much appreciation for exceptional music -- as a matter of fact, I know that to be true. Occasionally nowadays I sneak one of Joni's later, lower-voiced cd's in on her, thinking if she doesn't recognize it she's sure to get over her pre-conceived hatred and appreciate Joni -- but she catches me, every time. I have an old boyfriend, too, who never played Joni, and now I always hear it in the background when we talk on the phone. What a great feeling. My husband puts Joni on occasionally but what I really think is dear of him, though he doesn't admit to being a big fan himself, is that as soon as her latest cd is released he runs out and buys it for me. If I didn't love him for anything else, I'd love him for that. I love Jaco and it is nice to hear her opinion >on the subject. I think Jaco is at his best on Paprika Plains. I've been a big Jaco fan since he played with Weather Report. His work on Joni’s albums adds such incredible dimension. I'd never heard a bass player “play lead” or play melody lines. His bass playing sends shivers down my spine. No one back then used harmonics with such effect. One of best bass solos I’ve ever heard is Jaco’s “Havona,” from the “Heavy Weather” album when he was with Weather Report. I do think he was a genius. Just my humble opinion. If he were alive, I’m sure he would agree. It would be interesting to know how Joni's later work would have sounded with Jaco. I'm sure she would have continued to play with him (or he would have played with her) had he not deteriorated so terribly. Whatever, it's clear that Joni totally respected his art and massive talent and I think she really let him shine whenever they played live. He wouldn't have had it any other way, and she respected that. I work in the legal field and the first attorney I worked for (Mr. Whitaker) practiced entertainment law. He had been hired by the then president of some now defunct, small time music company in Florida who was trying to sign Jaco to a recording contract. It never materialized as Jaco died two months later in 1987. Jaco signed an agreement in which he was referred to as the "Artist" throughout. Mr. Whitaker made a Jaco collage including some obscure pictures, the album cover for Jaco's solo album, an obituary, a blue post-it note on which Jaco wrote some sad stuff, and a torn piece of the signed agreement with Jaco's signature. Mr. Whitaker gave me the collage when I left his employ. It's one of my most prized possessions and hangs over my computer. I just wish I had worked for one of Joni's attorneys. I could make some big bucks on eBay! Just kidding. I'd never sale anything with Joni's signature! Well.... Nah. The part of The Vamp from Hell you hear on the keyboard was something I tried out in 1984 when I was working on an extended jazz piece. We tried it in rehearsal, orchestrated for three or four horns and no one liked it-it was cumbersome and as a major theme, it was too short and repetitive. The way the second phrase answers the first is so inward-looking (self-referential, if you will) it doesn't want to grow outward to anything else. So for that long work, I found some much better thematic material and just put the self-referential fragment away for another day. I honestly don't remember if I wrote the bass line for "The Blonde..." arrangement or whether, before that was at issue, simply had the inspiration to complement the old vamp with something. Whichever it was, as I may have said in the notes for the CD, I felt there was something a little scattered, a little distracted, a little mad in JM's lyric. I combined this reaction with the reality that her recording does actually end with a saxophone playing a vamp (repeated melodic fragment) although it fades away rather quickly. When we made the recording, though it may sound like the horn players are just playing randomly, I told them I wanted discrete rhythmic statements to set up cross-rhythms against the keyboard-bass background and emphatically rejected the first take precisely 'cause this was not happening. That's the story! LAHM ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 02:10:32 -0400 From: "Ken (Slarty)" Subject: Re: what does this joni lyric mean?
