A fund-raiser to help WallyB has nothing to do with Joni? If you'll excuse me for personalising this a little - about three months ago I finally took the plunge and bought the necessary equipment to access the Internet. My very first 'search' ever was, I remember the moment well, "Joni Mitchell" - clunk! clunk! flicker! flicker.......clunk... and suddenly onto the screen Results: containing '"Joni Mitchell"' - 5272 1. The Joni Mitchell Homepage http://www.jonimitchell.com/ Remember, this is my first ever experience of anything internet whatsoever. Oh joy! Oh wonder! Interviews with David Crosby, Tom Rush, dulcimer makers, latest news, all her lyrics and open tunings, album and concert reviews - oh my God - I was up all bloody night just reading this one site - what's this? A discussion list and cafe? Sounds interesting - I wonder how much it costs to subscirbe - oh, it's free! Come to think of it - the whole site is free - there are no signs of profiteering whatsover - other than a connection with CD Now - fair enough. "How very un-American", I think to myself (No! Don't hit me!). Now I've never ever thought of myself as obsessed by Joni Mitchell. I am, however, obsessed by music - and Joni just happens to have been my favourite musician since 1968. I clearly remember hearing her name for the first time - I was playing guitar in a small coffee bar in Oxford (England) one night and a young guy with electrified 'Jimi Hendrix style' hair, is sitting in the corner holding a guitar case. I ask him if he'd like to play and he timidly says yes and, to a completely silenced bar, he plays a song called 'Marcie'. The very next day I am sitting in the listening booth of my local record shop hearing 'Song to a Seagull' for the first time, feeling so so excited that I had had the good fortune to discover someone who I just instinctively knew was going to be really really significant. And now, over 30 years later, I'm being asked to send a donation to help fund this truly brilliant place, conceived by this great guy who, due to ill-health is, I hear, being forced to give up his job. Am I going to send a donation? Well of course I am! And so should absolutely everyone on this list - if not money, then something to raffle or auction at the Jonifest. I read that when Wally first met Joni she asked him whether he was getting any help from her label, Reprise - if I remember rightly, she promised to look into it. Now, I am personally doubtful that Joni herself is a subscriber to the JMDL - but you can be damn sure that someone from Reprise is - lurking away every day to see what Joni's 'fan-base' is up to. Hi there! How about making Wally part of your publicity budget?? I bet your own 'miscellaneous expenses' account for one week is more than Ashara has raised so far!! Just take a loook at Wally's stats page - Last month's webstats had more than 479,000 total hits to all of the pages in the Mitchell site, with 6.0 GB of traffic. There've been 1,005,812 visitors to the homepage since August 1995 That's One million, five thousand eight hundred and twelve real people who are really interested - come on, Mr (or Ms) CEO of Reprise - how about matching that with $1.00 for every web site hit!! Dream on, Pauly boy! P.S. My other favourite internet site is Jane Siberry's Sheeba - I really urge you all to go and look around her 'hotel'. As someone who has shunned record companies and is now running her own business, my heart is with her. I couldn't sleep the other night so I got up, turned on my computer and went to http://www.sheeba.ca/ The screen just said "Please go away - I'm having some problems and I am currently under the table trying to fix them. Please come back tomorrow - Love Jane." Today the site is back and looking wonderful. She has a little payoff line in her correspondence that I would ask you all to think of when deciding whether to bother to send anything for Wally (Hi, Reprise - are you still reading this?) It goes: May your generosity come back to you one thousand fold. PaulC PPS Ashara - can I pay by credit card or would you mind cash (I totally trust you) - it's just that an International Money Order is going to cost me the equivalent of around $20.00!! This topic has come up before. I feel somewhat caddy talking about it but as someone who has seen Joni somewhat recently, without makeup, I don't think she has had a "facelift". She definitely looked her age. As a point of reference, check out the New York Times Magazine photo or the Day in The Garden concert. Amazing wonders can be done with makeup. Joni often doesn't wear much but has referred to her makeup artist, Paul Starr, as an "artist who just happens to work on faces". He did her makeup for the PWWAM video. My recollection is that she says in an interview that she has not done it (gone under the knife) *yet*. I believe her. That isn't to say she hasn't had more uninvasive procedures such as botox etc. As a woman of 43, with skin starting to sag, I won't rule out the possibility of doing some of these things myself. It's dated May 28th and it's a Special Collector's Issue entitled "The 100 Greatest Moments In Rock." Joni gets a nod in a few areas of this issue, including a short interview under the heading "Master Take," complete with a full page photo taken recently by Anton Corbijn. The image is quite different (I'll call it breezy) and I'm interested in hearing what you all think about it. Also on the page preceeding this IV & photo, there is an additional small photo of Joni from 1970, along with one of James Taylor and Carole King- the "Singer-Songwriters." And that's not all! The album Blue was voted the #4 "Classic Album" in the ET Wkly Online Poll (Way to go, folks!), and Hejira was voted as one of the "100 Greatest Album Covers." Even without the plethora of Joni stuff, this is a very cool issue. Enjoy! This philosophy matches mine. But whether anyone wants a facelift or not, whether it be Joni, the neighbor or my best friend, it's really none of my affair. Facelift or not, the photo in ASCAP site, is among my *least* favorite of Joni. It simply doesn't look like her. It doesn't capture the beautiful Joni I've come to know through images over the years. Had this type of photo been taken when she was 25, I would not have liked it then either. But maybe when *I'm* 55, I'll feel quite differently about this and I, too, may want a "glamour" shot. In any event, this whole issue is not earth shattering. I'll be glad when either or both the tribute album and the album of standards and possible tour are avialable for us to discuss. I could never say it as eloquently as Paul, but the feeling is the same. This is the first time in my life that I have felt that there is a community to which I am proud to belong and the diversity of which I enjoy rather than resent. No church, political movement or family setting has ever fulfilled my sense of community so much as the JMDL. The work of Joni Mitchell has been pivotal in the construction of my identity. Short of her music itself, I can't think of any greater contribution to my life as an artist than my membership to the JM Internet Community. I have encountered friendship, intellectual challenges, posts that had me rolling with laughter ... and I have had even the unique chance to fall in love with a fabulous jmdler out there and to be loved back! "I got hooked," the eclectic singer tells Billboard Online "when I performed with the El Niño Orchestra [at a 1998 benefit organized by Don Henley]. An arranger is working on the material now. I'm just going to come in to the studio and sing the songs like Frank [Sinatra]." Among the tracks she'll be covering are Billie Holiday's "Comes Love" and "You've Changed," as well as "Answer Me My Love" and "Stormy Weather." Mitchell, a past winner of Billboard's Century Award, will also sing a few standards that she wrote, including "Both Sides Now." The project is being produced by her ex-husband, Larry Klein. Mitchell's last album, "Taming The Tiger," was released last September by Reprise/Warner Bros. Anyway, in Kerouac's statement the Bartleby reference is not, I think, a negative one - the implied "I would prefer not to" is IMO directed at the life-denying in our civilization and, therefore, can be seen as an affirmation. I would be the last to say that JM's work was in any way negative. It is, in the best sense, life affirming! I just picked up money from a JMDLer from another country this way, which was very easy, and sent the money to Wally via my own check. 3) I have friends in England, who have sent cash via the mail many times before over the years, and it has never been a problem, so that way would be fine also. Thanks!! Hugs, Ashara P.S. Since this will also be going to the Joni-only list, and I sent the update on the NJC list, I have 13 checks totaling $371.00 so far!!!! When she caleed the post master he told her that they can *sniff* out money. this is what I was told so don't beat up on me please... It somehow reminds me of the black crow in flight photo from the Hejira sleeve. Something about the expression of the eyes. She is so beautiful and the lines around the eyes and mouth only enhance her special beauty.>> What are you saying Mark? That she's got Black Crow's feet around her eyes? :~D Bob << David Lahm's 'Jazz Takes on Joni Mitchell'. It finally arrived from CDNow after being on back order>> Yea! Maybe I'll finally get mine from backorder too... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 23:38:44 -0400 From: "Eric G. Postel" Subject: * When did Joni play OSU? Hi everybody.
