After a few drinks a lawyer I've worked with forever and some others were talking about possibly putting together some kind of upscale talent show sometime because our firm is unusually filled with an abundance of people who are brilliant and talented musicians and vocalists outside of work, including several of the lawyers and others who are on the professional level. This particular lawyer has an undergraduate degree from a music conservatory in piano. He is a very formidable lawyer and has very high and exacting standards. I mentioned that I was hoping to start up with a vocal coach recommended to me by another lawyer who is also a jazz singer and he asked me about the songs I used to write a zillion years ago. What kind of style was my music - Country? Folk? The only way I could describe it was "kinda emulating early Joni Mitchell." At the mention of her name, he got this amazing look in his eyes and I felt like my stock with him had suddenly soared 1000%. "Jooonnniiii Mitcccheellll", he said, savoring every syllable, and speaking in a hushed and reverent tone. When he finally recovered he gazed sharply at me and asked in a challenging, interrogative tone, "Well can you sing "Twisted"? I laughed and said "of course not, not well at least, but Joni can." Everyone around us now wanted to know about the song. He waxed on an on about it and said it was incredible but that hardly anyone had the ability to sing it well except Joni. Geez, I hope he doesn't join the list - I don't want to combine work and my "oasis" ya know? But hey Mark, if you're out there, now I'm busted ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 12:37:09 +0100 From: catman Subject: Subject Lines I volunteered to collate the Colardo thread. Easy, I thought, I have all the mail. Well it would have been easy if people had not changed the subject heading!!!!!! It would have been far easier if, when replying to a post, people did not change the subject heading in any way!(cept of course to add NJC if the originator didn't!) This would greatly help any future collating on any subject, even Joni ones, hence this is not marked NJC. bw colin - -- CARLY SIMON DISCUSSION LIST http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk/ethericcats/index.html TANTRA’S/ETHERIC PERSIANS AND HIMALAYANS http://www.ethericcats.demon.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 09:18:22 EDT From: RMuRocks@aol.com Subject: Tape Trees Well, I for one am excited about the upcoming tape trees! Thanks so much Simon, especially for the covers as I am somewhat of a cover junkie. (I'm still hoping to get a copy of the Atlanta concert someday...) I received in the mail yesterday a CD from our local NPR station for making a pledge. It's called "Crowd Around The Mic" and features 15 tracks from artists who show up and play in WNCW's studio. Of course, all the artists have given permission to have their live songs on the CD, and since the CD is not available commercially, I thought I would offer to "tree" it for anybody who may be interested in any of these artists or folk music in general. The quality is very good, as they're all in the radio station studio you hear live music with no audience interference. The artists & songs are: 1. Peter Case "Crroked Mile" 2. Bap Kennedy with 6 String Drag "Long Time A Comin'" 3. The Derailers "California Angel" 4. Fred Eaglesmith "White Trash" 5. James McMurtry "Peter Pan" 6. Jim Lauderdale "Whisper" 7. Dave Alvin & The Guilty Men "Andersonville" (They opened for Joni on tour) 8. The Bottle Rockets "Smokin' 100's alone" 9. R.B. Morris "Copper Penny" 10. Kate Campbell "Bowl-a-Rama" 11. Seconds Flat "Trapped Between the Lines" 12. Michael Reno Harrell "Caroline" 13. The Del McCoury Band "White House Blues" 14. Tony Furtado "Raleigh & Spencer" 15. David Grisman with Enrique Coria and Matt Eakle "Dawgmatism" If anyone wants to send a blank & postage for a copy, just let me know. Her body space makes the conversation so intimate- like you've known her for years. I also felt an urge to protect her at the same time, to hug her. It's hard to describe, but it goes beyond the "fan" thing. She just really exudes warmth. We should not have to live in fear in this country Something needs to be done. Maybe getting back to our roots or banning together, something. My son left school early on Thurs. and did not go to school on Friday. All of the schools around the nation have been getting threats from other *wanna-be* (hopefully wanna-bes) and it is just driving me nuts. This has been quite a problem and it is about time WE address this rather then sitting back and letting our *government* do something about it. If anything, it does not fully show her real beauty. I was there and was amazed at how stunning she looked up close. I have never seen auras around people as some have claimed to see, but I did see something those nights of the tapings and it was more than the lighting effects. She had a visible golden glow radiating around her. When people are glowing they always seem to appear 10-20 years younger than their age. After the first taping night some of us met her outside in the dark with only a few building lights on. She still glowed. I was inches from her face for a few seconds (she seems to have a habit, mentioned here by others who've met her, of getting right up in your face when she speaks with you) and I did do a quick scan for wrinkles, thinking her make-up was miraculous that night. I truly did not see any. However, there are all kinds of new-fangled ways to eliminate wrinkles these days without surgery, so while she may be able to technically say she has not had a facelift, she may have had laser treatments, botox or collagen injections, or, ahem, as some suggested, a (don't try this at home, kids) base coat of Preparation H before the make-up was applied. ;-) Kakki >> Girl, You are so lucky to have met her *face to face*! I have always dreamed of meeting the Goddess myself. One day I will hopefully! If she had a facelist and frankly, in this kind of market youth always wins hands down...I would not blame her in the least. When I get older I probably will too. Who likes seeing wrinkles staring back at you in that mirror when you still feel like you are in your late twenties? I know I won't. So here I am, in the Cleveland airport waiting for my flight back to Philly from Columbus OH, on a payphone with a datajack *and* an electric outlet handy. What an unusual find in today's airports. But, here me are in Cleveland !! I'm wearing my JMDL t-shirt and getting all kind of looks, as if to say "What the hell does 'SIQUOMB, isn't she?' means ! Keep up the lively discussion. It may be the only thing that keeps me half-sane while I'm on the road, downloading the digests and reading them wherever I am, in a hotel or on an airplane. And simon, thank you for all you've done and continue to do to bring us jmdlers the magic of the tape trees. They make this place even *more* special for those of us who thought we were alone in our love for Joni's gifts all these years.
