Since we have been discussing it, I have been playing it quite a lot, and although it IS such a stark departure from C&S, I still think that it really does cohere to C&S somewhat. With the exception of The Jungle Line and Shadows and Light, I think we can make a lot of connections between the albums, and if those two songs had been left off the album, I bet it would have had a much warmer reception. However, thank the good lord Joni didn't omit the songs, because I love them, BUT... if they weren't on the album, I think she wouldn't have had half as much flack as she got, since these two songs seem to "stick out" so much. But then again... what the hell do I know... LOL! I'd like to try to learn some other ones sometime and am impressed that Michael and Terry can play so many on piano. Before I found Sue's Guitar Files and Jim Leahy's list of tunings a couple of years ago, I only did songs in the tuning patterns of x77374 (California Kitchen Tuning - I played both Hejira and Coyote, as well as Sisotowbell Lane and Song To A Seagull (a cover) in this tuning), x75435 (Both Sides Now, Cactus Tree, Chelsea Morning and The Dawntreader), x57435 (Circle Game, Gallery, Marcie, Morning Morgantown, For The Roses), and x77543 (Cold Blue Steel). The first new Joni song I learned, after finding Sue's site, was Moon At The Window. It was so wonderful to learn a new Joni song after such a long time of not even playing my guitar very much. This song will always be very special to me because it was the beginning of a musical adventure that has lasted two years and is still going strong. If not, check the photos on David Crosby's first solo album. That's her, playing the autoharp on "Traction In the Rain"! Or look at the credits for Crosby/Nash's "Whistling Down The Wire". That's her, playing zither on the album. And "JB's Blues" is about Joel Bernstein's love for her! ( She's even appearing on "Coast Road" - a great outtake from David Crosby's first album! ) This great singer/songwriter has released three solo albums which she's selling through her own company - Skyline Entertainment : 1. "Opening Up To You" ( 1978 ) This is a re-release of the Elektra-album that started out as a Stephen Barncard-production in 1976 and ended up as "Laura Allan", produced by Chuck Plotkin in 1978. Stephen Barncard still has nice things to say about her : "When I hear Jewel sing, I hear a carbon copy of the real thing : Laura Allan. Great, magic talent." The album features performances by Jim Keltner, Waddy Wachtel, Lee Sklar, Valerie Carter, Bill Champlin, Jeff Porcaro, Bill Payne, Wendy Waldman, Joel Bernstein, Craig Doerge and Penny Nichols. The CD release even features 4 bonus tracks from the sessions by Stephen Barncard. 2. "Hold On To Your Dreams" ( 1996 ) This is the album that placed Laura back on the musical map in 1996. A self-produced album on her own label with backing by, among others, Laurence Juber, Guy Babylon, Joel Bernstein and Mark Gould. One of the tracks ( "Our Love" ) even made the charts in Japan! 3. "Telegraph" ( 1999 ) The brand new album that will be released at the end of the month! Features 10 original, new tracks plus a re-recording of "Slip And Slide" from the first album, with stellar backing by Lee Sklar, Tom Ralston ( ex-Country Joe and Seatrain ), Jono Brown, Derol Caraco ( from new age/fusion-band Windows ) and many others. All three albums are available from : Mom's Music/Skyline Records 994 Grizzly Peak Blvd. Berkeley CA 94708 - 1549 U.S.A. or email : LAfergus@aol.com Check 'em out - they're great! For those of you who have the cassettes of "A Tape Of You," you can hear my old man and myself, performing "Night In The City" and "Carey." I sing, and Steve plays mandolin, guitar and accordion. Three of our friends joined us on the recording playing dulcimer, harmony vocals and percussion. Last month, our band, the "Yazoo Blues Revue" played four songs live on a local radio station, KPIG. One of the songs we performed was "Comes Love." The performance is archived on the internet and you can hear it if you have RealPlayer at: http://gate.cruzio.com/~stevem/yazoo.html. Click on "Please Stand By" and then March 7, 1999. This show is on weekly every Sunday from 10am - Noon (PST) with different guests and always promises to be entertaining. My latest music project is singing in a gospel choir. As a Jewish woman growing up in Brooklyn, NY, let me tell you that this is a direction I never could have anticipated. I'll tell you briefly how this all came together. My husband, Steve, maintains a website for an internationally acclaimed blues singer, Sista Monica - http://www.sistamonica.com. Anyway, the Sista came to Steve's recent birthday party and heard us all jamming and singing... She also listened to our performance on "Please Stand By" and asked me if I'd like to be a part of her gospel project (which will be going out on the road). The name of the project is "Gimme That Old Time Religion." As I always do with musical projects, I'm researching the history, etc. We're doing tunes formerly performed by Mavis Staples, the Dixie Hummingbirds and Mahalia Jackson. I can honestly say that aside from listening to Joni and a few others, I'm finally feeling the music awaken the spirit. I'll let you know when the CD is completed - and by the way, Sista Monica has an incredible voice; it's an honor to sing with her. Until Monica and I started becoming friends, she had never heard or heard of Joni Mitchell. Amen. A new convert. I have been puzzled by the comments that HOSL was a departure from C&S. At the time, it seemed like C&S part 2 to me, stylistically similar, smooth, produced, same basic band. The jump from acoustic drumless (mostly) songs of FTR to the cosmopolitan jazz-rock of C&S was a much bigger one, I think.
