What a treat to get to see the band, though, a week later at the Santa Monica pier. Years of waiting to see a live performance inSoCal and then two in two weeks! I don't have the list in front of me, but it's something like 10 or 11 a.m. Yeah, those Millpond workshops are intimate. You should have been at the one we did September 15, 2001. All flights were cancelled, there was talk of dumping the festival altogether, but we all said, hell if we can get there, let's do it. So we piled into a van and instead of a 2 hour flight, we took a 2 day drive from Seattle to Bishop. Jen was stuck in St. Louis and couldn't get back so we had to leave without her. However just our luck, Barbara Lamb, who lives in Nashville and was not expected to play that gig, was stuck in the Bay Area. She was desperately trying to get home until I tracked her down and told her to hang on to her rental car (remember, there were no rentals to be had that week) and meet us in Bishop. She's always up for an adventure so she stopped everything and joined us. The mainstage performance was pretty great, but the morning workshop was something special. Everybody's nerves were shot, we'd all had the week from hell, it seemed like everyone was constantly on the verge of tears. Laura just threw it open for questions and requests. Small kids were packed in front of the stage and their weary parents were taking up all the chairs, grateful to be out of the hot sun. The band was warm and funny, they played everything that was requested, or at least gave it a try. The kids asked great questions with lots of insight. By the end we all felt like maybe we would heal, maybe we could all get through this. After the workshop, we packed up and drove 2 days back to Seattle through Eastern California and Eastern Oregon. Beautiful country, especially in the early fall. I'll never forget it... - ---------- From: Richard Hoaglund Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 16:08:34 -0700 o: octoroon@smoe.org Subject: [octoroon] Re: octoroon-digest V6 #12 any chance LLB will do another workshop @ Millpond? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 22:26:30 -0700 From: "Ned Olson" Subject: [octoroon] RE: octoroon-digest V6 #12 I will weigh in on recommending the duo. I first saw Laura perform as a duo with Jen down in Chico California and was completely amazed at the incredible music those two could make often without the benefit of even Jen's guitar. Laura could easily accompany herself solo on the bass, but Jen really adds chemistry whether she is just harmonizing, banging on some random percussion-type thing, or keeping up the famous stage banter. We saw the full band at the Fremont Solstice celebration in Seattle last month. I really like hearing Rod Cook laying into those solos. I have yet to hear him with his own band "Toast", but I have heard him solo. He's certainly an accomplished performer, but when he lets Laura do the performing, as she does so well, it seems like it frees him to just make wonderful music. Maybe that's part of the dynamic of the LL band. Nobody is locked in. They are all out there pursuing their own stuff and taking their own risks so when they do come together they just each seem to have a little extra to contribute to the experience. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2003 15:27:22 -0700 (PDT) From: -Deb- Subject: [octoroon] admin notes Nice to see some activity on the list!
