Maybe it's in questionable taste, but I wanted to share with you the worst review Laura has ever received. I thought it might inspire some Love chat. After years of trying to get some coverage in The Performing Songwriter Magazine, they finally printed a review of Laura's new release, Welcome To Pagan Place. Here's what Rich Challen had to say: Folksinger with a capital "F", Laura Love has been recording for over a decade, garnering a cult fanbase as well as an idiosyncratic vocal style which - unfortunately - hasn't improved with age. And that's the biggest stumbling block in fully appreciating Welcome To Pagan Place, her eighth studio release. With throat gymnastics kept to a minimum, Love is capable of standout moments, such as the sumptuous "Trickle Down" and "Gone", an effective protest song. Too often, though, she favors coffeehouse funk - all bongos and politely slapped bass - coupled with quirky vocals to produce such far-too-clever bits as "Cain't Nobody", title pronounced as spelled. Converts need not worry; newcomers, however, should proceed with caution. "all bongos and politely slapped bass"??? Ouch. Performing Songwriter is a great magazine with wonderful articles and info relevent to anyone who is a performer and fans who love great music. Which is why this review was particularly disappointing. But the rest of the June issue #70 is great - it's a special salute to independent artists and features Ani DeFranco on the cover. You can pick it up at newsstands or visit them online at http://performingsongwriter.com. Letters to the editor can be sent to letters@performingsongwriter.com. Be nice... We became friends right away. That idiosyncratic vocal style is one thing, among many, that keeps us coming back for more - as Laura knows! And sorry, but it HAS gotten even better with age. - ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: marymcfaul Date: Wed, 04 Jun 2003 15:02:39 -0700 Hi friends and fans.
