I bought Octoroon first, after reading an intriguing review of it in the Washington Post and played it constantly. Nearly drove my family nuts. But glad to report, my husband and even my college-age daughters have gotten the Laura Love bug by now, just not quite so badly... - ----- Original Message ----- From: "- Deb -" To: "Laura Love List" Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 8:34 PM Subject: RE: [octoroon] this summer > I hear these kinds of stories about people discovering Laura live all the > time... nearly every fan I know didn't "get it" until they saw her live... > > -- > Deb \\ indigo@mindspring.com \\http://www.mindspring.com/~indigo > > At 07:11 PM 10/22/2002, Olson, Ned wrote: > >Thanks, Bruce. I know what you mean-I first saw her on "Sessions at West 54th" and was totally knocked out!!! I then got a bunch of her songs off the internet and listened to them constantly for a loooooong time. Then started my video project and so go my "fix" that way for awhile. And while I was at shows bought cd's. I can hardly wait till project is done so we all can see 1st class video of Laura but in meantime am busy with Rod and "Toast" I will keep everybody informed as to progress. Things tapered off until Bruce came along. Those who have been on the list for sometime know that after I have seen LL I usually write about the experience. If it is a "tour" (where I see her many times in a row) I usually write a book. Just some background for newbee's to the list. I first found LL at the Smithsonian. I was there as a chaperone for my daughters 5th grade class. I was flipping through CD's at the gift shop and came across one called Women's Work. LL sang If You Leave Me Now. I thought it was the best song on the CD. The Merle Fest flyer came in the mail and there she was in the line up. So of course I went. There were maybe 50 people at her first show. No one had heard of her. All kinds of musicians came out to sing and play with her and the band. It turned out to be the best show at the fest. Her 2nd show was packed. I couldn't find my 9 year old daughter, who was with me at the beginning of the show. I found her moments later backstage yakking it up with Laura. I became known as Renee's Mom. I bought Pangea that year. The next merle fest. I bought all the rest of the CD's that were out at the time. As Renee described it:' you play LL over and over until you think you are going to throw up and then you play it some more.' Fast forward now. I just got back from a "tour" of the southeast and it was great. If you haven't been to a show in a while you'll be surprised and delighted. They have been practicing their bootay's off. I caught LL and band at Magnolia fest for two nights and then went on down to the Skipper Dome to finish off the weekend. I thought the second night of the Mag fest was their best as they pulled songs out of their bootays I had never heard them do before. Fly Like an Eagle, Come Together and a few others I can't even remember now. The band has become a jam band too. On the song called I Know, they went off and jammed so long that I had forgotten what song they had started it off with. Minutes flew by before going back into I Know. It blew me away! Skippers is always a treat as the crowd is totally different. Lots of noisy women in the house. I do love that high pitched sound. Everybody knows all the words and it becomes a big sing along. Members of the warm up band called FRUIT came out to join in. (if you haven't seen Fruit they should be on your list to catch sometime). Skippers is a big party! I labeled this tour the "Dances with Fairies Tour". I won't go into all the Synchronicity's that brought me to that but... Good news!!!!!I guess it is ok to tell the world as Mary was showing me pictures of the baby. Laura and her partner Pam are with child. They are taking on a foster child. What a lucky little girl Christina Mae (hope I spelt that right) is. Big brown eyes and a smile that makes you smile right back. If you went 'souly' by the smile you'd never know this little one had a tough start on life. Laura and Mary just had this glow about them as they talked about the child. I'm surprised Mary wasn't handing out cigars. It is always a soul restoring experience going on 'tour' with LL. Sometimes it is the destination that is the reward and sometimes it is the journey. But with LL it is both. The 13 hours drive time each way is not a bother. I love camping out at the Mag fest. I love hanging out at the beach after Skippers. This is what I do as vacation time. I do declare I will do it as long as LL goes on tour. When she goes to Europe I'll do that too.
