So although I missed the Laura Love Band, I was really looking forward to hearing the duo. (I hope that the smaller lineup will allow Laura to leave the Pacific Northwest more often!) Laura opened with an old spiritual song which may have been called "Troubles Here Below". The Christian nature of it made this atheist a bit nervous, until the song ended, and Laura noted that you could easily substitute the word "Cheeses" for Jesus. :-) That was typical of the banter between Jenn and Laura; they had the crowd busting up all night. Laura followed that with great versions of favorites "Anyway" and "A Ha Me a Riddle A Day." Then Jenn played one of her songs, a contemporary folk tune, which may have been called "Gonna Get It Right This Time." Jimmy Ryan came out to join them for Laura Nyro's "Stone Soul Picnic" and "Amazing Grace." Catie came out to play drums on "I'm A Giving Way," and all hell broke loose. :-) Catie has a new cocktail drum , and in the middle of the song, it fell over, and there was some hilarious improvisation by all parties which I will not even begin to try to represent here! They finished up with Laura original "Nelson" and the funkiest cover of the Steve Miller Band's "Fly Like an Eagle" that you will ever hear. Catie's Set - ----------- No band tonight, this was a Catie and Jimmy duo show. They opened with "Bicycle Named Heaven" and "Troubled Mind." Then a new song (yea!) that may be called "Follow." "Patience," "100 Miles," and another new song, "Wonderland." Catie said that "Wonderland" was one of many songs she'd written about the ocean, most of which she never finished. She played "Sugar Cane" by request, then "Elizabeth." Jimmy then played a song off of his upcoming CD, tentatively called "Lost Diamond Angel", out later this year. The song was called "Diamonds," and Catie played drums and sang backing vocals. I liked it a lot, as I think many Catie fans would. The lyrics "another sexy mandolin" got a rousing reception. :-) They followed with a terrific version of my favorite, "Memphis." Catie talked about being in Europe at the time of Bush's "axis of evil" speech, and she spoke of how that and ruminations on John Lennon's "Imagine" resulted in the next new song, "Doctor." It was very beautiful. She then played "Magnolia Street" by request. Jenn and Laura came back out to join Catie and Jimmy for "Kiss that Counted" which brought the crowd to its feet. Really, the energy that Laura brought into the crowd overall was pretty amazing. Catie told a story riding around with her pug, when two people said something to her through her car window, and she thought they were saying "Is your dog retarded," but her fellow passengers told her later that they were actually saying "Are you Catie Curtis?" I think you had to be there. :-) Then they played "Soulfully" by request. Requests for "What's the Matter" were jokingly responded to by Laura "Nothing, I'm fine!" Next up was Laura's version of the traditional "O Shenandoah," with Catie and Jenn both taking verses (Jimmy insisted on playing mandolin on his verse!), and beautiful harmonies between the three throughout. Laura said they wanted to finish up "positively," as the ensemble launched into Jackie DeShannon's "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." As with the prior song, the ladies traded vocals, and Jimmy took his lead on mandolin. - ------- I really liked all of Catie's new songs, and Jimmy's song as well, so know that there is some great new music on the horizon from those two! I talked with Laura after the show, and she said that she basically had a new album, but was holding it back because she's had interest from another party to use it in a film project. I hope I've managed to convey in some small way, just how much fun this show was, for those who aren't able to see this special double-bill. ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V5 #5 ****************************
