I'm no good at estimating numbers of people but suffice it to say that folks were well and truly packed in by the Battery Park Stage for Laura's outstanding 1.5 hour set. I could tell there were many Laura fans in attendance, but I am sure she gained many, many more that night. Musically, I can't say enough about how tight and energetic the band was - this was only my second LL Band show but I'm more than convinced of their consistent virtuosity. And impressed by how effortlessly they interact with each other and convey that they are all having WAY TOO MUCH FUN up there on stage. It's a performance attitude that is absolutely infectious, and the crowd ate it up. I didn't keep a set list but they opened with Amazing Grace and threw down one equally amazing song after another for the rest of the set. Asheville strikes me as a very political town, and Laura really did her homework, touching on a very heated and topical local issue (trying to keep out Super Wal-Mart!) in introducing "Sometimes Davey Wins." (The Asheville crowd seemed appreciative of both the song and the story behind "Sativa" as well.) All in all, an excellent performance for a really great crowd. And I agree wholeheartedly with Barbara Lamb: they DO make amazing espresso in Asheville. "Starbucks ain't got nothing on you." I can easily see the band becoming a fixture at this festival.
