It was also the second time the Laura Love Band performed at this festival. And let me tell you, this county's fairgrounds are one of the finest in the nation. With tall pine trees covering the grassy grounds and the camping area providing lots of shade, excellent food vendors, 6 stages, beautiful warm sunny weather, lots of happy people, and top notch producers, this year's event was a huge success. Laura Love Band played to a very respectable sized crowd on the first of three nights of the festival. But, that wasn't where it all started ... Rod Cook was scheduled to play solo at 3pm. That never happened as the band was late getting to the fairgrounds. I was fearful that I would also miss seeing Barbara Lamb's performance that she was to do with Joe Craven at 4pm. Fortunately, they did make it in time for this one. Now, I'm not aware of how far Joe Craven has gone outside the local area here, so I'm not sure how many people have heard of him. This guy is a NUT! But a very talented nut he is! Not only does he play several instruments (including sounds emanating from his mouth and other body parts) extremely well, the guy dresses in outrageous costumes. Apparently, he dresses up other performers as well. The first time I walked by the stage where Barbara Lamb was to be joining Joe Craven, I only saw Joe. 10 minutes later I walked by to see Joe playing fiddle whilst dressed in leopard leotards with a bright blue synthetic grass skirt and bunny slippers. His cohort was wearing a cape and had long red hair. They were playing something very slow and odd. I just kept walking. 15 minutes later I went back with a friend I had just hooked up with, and was I amazed! The gal with the cape and long red hair WAS Barbara Lamb! They were now jamming away and there was no mistaking the fine fiddle playing of Babs. Babs soon called up Chris Leighton to join them on percussions. I think he played some bongo drums for the first couple of songs. But then he dipped into Joe's "bag of toys" and the songs to follow got stranger and sillier and had everyone rolling in the grass dying of laughter. It was an incredible set that could never be duplicated even if they had tried. Precious! O.K., skip forward about 4 hours. The entire band comes out starting off with Amazing Grace. I was too much into the groove to worry about a setlist, but there weren't any surprises. She played a few off of "14 Days" which I hadn't heard before, including "Sometimes Davie Wins", "Stoned Soul Picnic", and "Sativa" preluded by a story of her getting busted for growing pot several years ago. The "butt" songs played back to back were enhanced by, wouldn't ya know it, Joe Craven coming on stage in another one of his kookie costumes. Wearing a red wig and funky glasses, swinging a handbag, and "bum enlarging" stuffing underneath his skirt, he danced and did the "bump and grind" with Laura and Babs before making his rounds past Chris. It was a complete riot. The other songs that I remember them playing were Octoroon, High Divide Oh, All the Pushin', and Give me Five. Well, after another full day of music and 4 days later, I can't even remember what their closing song was. But I do remember that on the last song Joe Craven made another appearance with long blonde hair this time, florescent, green, round spectacles and a very colorful (of course) polyester looking hula outfit. He just stayed in the background this time doing a nice little hula dance to the music. Once Laura finally looked back and noticed him there, she could hardly contain herself. The whole band put on a solid set all the while keeping the fun factor at the maximum. It was quite an entertaining and fulfilling night of music. I left with my copy of "14 days" and Laura's bluegrass album with Jo Miller. I haven't had a good enough listen yet of the new CD to review it yet, but what I've heard so far I really like.
