Laura played Sunday and by this time there were less than 100 people around. I got to talk to her somebeforehand, and during her set she borrowed my roommattes hula hoop's and hula'd for everyone. Not only is she an amazing musician, but she really knows how to perform! I love her Steph ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1999 23:56:27 EDT From: MMcfaul805@aol.com Subject: [octoroon] Barbara Lamb and others Allen asks: <> Barbara plays with Laura when she is available and when there is enough $ in the budget to fly her in from Nashville, where she lives (the rest of the band lives in Seattle). Babs also plays with John Cowan (a great band) and in the past has played with Sweethearts of The Rodeo, Asleep At The Wheel, and lots of touring bluegrass bands. She is also in demand in Nashville as a session artist (recording studio gigs), has a songwriting contract and gets lots of calls for local gigs. So, when Babs is not available, we take along Jen Todd who is a fabulous singer and plays rhythm guitar and mandolin and another musician who plays a lead instrument. Often that fourth musician is Nova Devonie on accordion. Ranch Romance fans will know Nova and will be thrilled to see her on stage again. When Nova is not available, we have taken Mark Graham who is an incredible harmonica player and really witty songwriter - (some of Mark's lyrics: to a country hoedown beat - "Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Rex, how can a guy get so complex? He killed his pa and married his ma - that's a $30 fine in Arkansas." He's got another one about living next door to a really rowdy house where there's loud noises and obnoxious behavior at all hours of the day and night and he can't figure out what the hell is going on over there. The chorus goes "I live at number 667 - I'm the neighbor of the Beast." Anyway, when Mark is not available, we ask Dick Powell, who is a very well know blues harmonica player in Seattle. He is a good friend of Rod and Chris' and played on a few tunes on Octoroon - he just burns down the house on the title cut. He'll be playing live with the band for the first time this weekend in Florida, so don't miss those shows! Almost all of Laura's side players have great CDs available that are worth checking out. Most of you know that Rod and Chris have a CD with their local band, Toast. This is mix of all the types of music that they love the best - blues, rhythm and blues, roots rock and jazz. It is a full band recording with some of the best musicians in Seattle and contains songs written by Rod and a couple covers. Rod also has a CD that he recorded with Curley Cooke (no relation). Curley is a great blues guitarist who used to tour with the Stever Miller Band. That album (Double Cookin') is based around more acoustic blues guitar duets, mostly traditional with a couple originals. Laura sings backup on a tune or two on both CDs. Babs has a couple CDs out that feature her favorite mix of fiddle music - mostly bluegrass, swing, country and jazz. Both albums are a mix of instrumentals and vocal tunes. Babs is a great player as you know and records only with the best. Her albums are really fun and exciting. We know Jen Todd because she was a founder of one of Laura's favorite local bands called 3 Track Mind. The three leaders (two women and one man) are all great songwriters and singers and their two albums are really well arranged and produced with some great, moving tunes. If you like Crosby, Stills, Nash, you will like 3 Track Mind. Nova has a recording out with another band called Relish. Relish mostly features songs and vocals by a long time Seattle songwriter, Dave Ellis. Dave has a long history playing original songs around here in country/rock and r&b styles. With Relish, he goes almost all acoustic with Nova on accordion, David Keenan (ex-Ranch Romance) on guitars, banjo, mandolin and fiddle and other fine Seattle musicians. Nova and David also contribute vocals and original tunes to the CD. Dick Powell has a great rockin' blues album that he will bring this weekend. If you like harmonica, buy this album. And next time Mark Graham is along, buy any of his many CDs. They are full of his hysterical songs but they are recorded with rock solid Seattle musicians - mostly playing country, blues and Celtic styles. So, now that you have all of Laura's recordings, take a chance and pick up the side players'. We picked them for a reason - we think you will like them. So, I'll see you Southerners in Florida this weekend! Mary ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V2 #70 *****************************
