A crowd gathered for the event that was a part of Out Charlotte, the Gay/Lesbian/Bi/TG festival, waited with quiet murmuring for the appearence of an all-too-infrequent visitor to this side of the continent, Miss Laura Love. The whole crew came on stage--Laura, Barbara Lamb, Ron Cook, and Chris Leighton--and readied themselves for a knock-down, drag-out concert, which started out with a soaring rendition of AMAZING GRACE. Laura's full voice filled the theatre with an energy that couldn't be resisted. Then the band moved on through renditions of: CAPRICORN & HOMINY; WOE IS ME; MAHBOOTAY; GIVE ME FIVE; the Hank Williams standard, I'M SO LONESOME, I COULD CRY; ALL THE PUSHIN'; I AM WONDERING; A HA ME A RIDDLE I DAY; a cut from the Ron Cook/Chris Leighton-driven TOAST--an Elvis oldie, MYSTERY TRAIN; a Barbara Lamb extravaganza, SARAH GOODLIN; PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART; OCTOROON; and then a yodel-fest that merged with a rendition of PLAY THAT FUNKY FIDDLE, WHITE GIRL. Then they left the stage for long enough for the audience to cause the theatre to tremble with calls for an encore! The gang came back and laid us all out with a rendition of LESS IS MORE. And that put finis to that. But the fun wasn't over! Laura and Barbara helped to man the music table in the lobby as first-time and die-hard fans (meself included) picked up copies of Laura's and Barbara's works, as well as copies of TOAST albums, along with pictures with Laura and autographs galore (I picked up Z THERAPY and HELVETICA BOLD, and got both signed by Laura and Barbara--too cool!)! It was a thrill, as always to see Love & Co. in action. The added bonus was that she was up there for an hour and a half--three times as long as any gigs I had seen her in at MERLEFEST, where I was first enchanted by her giggles and magical music. She was just as gracious and kind as she has always been, making it a familiar, warm moment, as always. Laura mentioned during the concert that she and the gang were there to put the "Yo!" back in "yodel" and the "Ho!" back in "hoe-down". They did this, and then some! Can't wait to see her again! But then again, what else is new? Always lovin' that good Love! Todd Haney Gushing Fanboy, 2nd Class. ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V2 #68 *****************************
