It is often said that things happen for a reason. Mercury dropping LL could very well be a good thing in the long run for LL and the band. I wish I had a ton of money to help out but alias I live from day to day enjoying the simple things in life. Like good music. I don't understand or even want to get involved in the mergers and the bottom line. My bottom line is to have enough money after I buy books and CD's to eat. I think most people are in the same groove. LL and band are no exception. Things will have to change and they will. Is this the same Seagrams that bought out a well known winery in NY many years back? I believe it was then called Taylor's. They are now called Bully Hill. I read something about that a couple of years back. What a court battle the owner went through. He lost but they didn't get his goat. He changed and is now back on top especially in NY. I live in NC and have had the pleasure of trying his wine on a tour and it is all I buy now, and they don't even sell it in NC. It is organicallly grown, there are over 50 vintages, and each label is a work of art done by the owner. So my point is that he lost but he changed and kept on in his own way and in the end he won. He just can't say he is Taylor wine. He is Bully Hill! So LL and the gang don't let them get your goat. Find your own wave. Your loyal fans will follow. You might not be making the mega bucks you'd like to but I don't make the mega bucks I'd like to either. As a loyal fan I'll do what is in my power and pocketbook to help. So have some faith, be creative, and willing and keep on truckin'. Stay open, something big is happening here. There my pep talk for the day. To all you fans that have been recently blessed with the ability to see LL in concert, I envy you. LL isn't going to be any where near NC. The show I was willing to travel 12 hours one way for has been canceled and then this sad news. I guess I'll have to live vicariously through your postings. change is good birdgrdnr ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 11:07:13 -0800 (PST) From: Rick Hickman Subject: Re: [octoroon] Better things ahead for Laura I live in Michigan and the Big Game jackpot for Saturday night is $140 million! I don't usually play, but when I win Saturday night, the first thing on my list is to be Laura's financier. Keep your fingers crossed for me, Laura and all of us LL fans. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? When you win, can I have that extra $10,000,000? ;-) Any list members going to the Ann Arbor, MI shows Apr. 6? peace & music, jeff On Thu, 1 Apr 1999, Rick Hickman wrote: > I live in Michigan and the Big Game jackpot for > Saturday night is $140 million! I'd venture to guess that being on a major label has nothing to do with making the mega bucks, and never has been except for the Celine Dions of the world. The bottom line for artists in every other category is that being on a major more often *costs* them. It's almost like a curse, because you ante up your whole creative self and wind up in debt to an indifferent beuaracratic beast. There was a great article by Steve Albini making the rounds a while back which lays out the actual numbers involved in the typical major label contract. The label, the lawyers, the accountants, and everyone *but* the artist make out like bandits! I think the band in the example given ended up either with negative balances or with minimum wage earnings to show for all their hard work. (Wish I still had the treatise to share with you.) Laura Love was actually a very good example of someone who had been very successful prior to signing to a label, someone from whom I took a great deal of inspiration in that regard (a la Ms. DiFranco). Godspeed, lovely Laura, I know that you know that you are much better off without the bastards! ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V2 #40 *****************************
