I really enjoy seeing artists there. Its a great, intimate space. I thought Laura was great, I really enjoied the addition of Barbara Lamb (I'd only seen Julie Wolf play with Laura before) and everyone seemed to be in a great mood. The only parts of the evening that was less than perfect were the people who yelled at my partner for being in their way while she was leaning on a bench, trying to stand. . . she tore her ACL last week and goes in for surgery in a few days. Needless to say she can barely stand and no one in the whole place offered her a seat. She was in obvious pain and the only comments she got were sneers from people sitting who didn't have a perfect view during the opening act. Regardless, the evening was great, we eventually got seats and there's no use getting angry now. If people like, I can post the set list tomorrow. I wasn't aware that there was an incarnation of the band with Julie but not Barbara. I have to say, I didn't miss Julie as much as I thought I would. Laura is so entertaining in every way, from her bass playing to her vocals to her energy and stage presence. But as if that weren't enough, she has an unbelievable band in those 3... Chris has the most unusual drum kit I've ever seen (featuring an oil barrel!), Rod is an amazing guitarist, and Barbara sure knows how to rock that fiddle! As the time between shows passes, the memory of just how good they are fades, and it's wonderful to be reminded again. Great, great show, and a very appreciative audience too. After the show, Laura stayed to sign stuff, they had lots of CDs and info to pick up, and I finally met Mary and got to put a face to the name we see here on the list so often! Laura was really cute when Mary introduced me, "Oh! The SMOE list!" Yep, that's us! :-) >The only parts of the evening that was less than perfect were the people who >yelled at my partner for being in their way while she was leaning on a >bench, trying to stand. . . What I said, when your partner moved from an unobtrusive position to standing right in front of me (I was sitting in a booth where I could not stand if I wanted to), was "I'd really appreciate it if you didn't stand *right* in front of me." I didn't so much as raise my voice, and I don't think it was an unreasonable request. I had no idea that the bench was serving the purpose you indicate below, she had been standing well out of the way before and just seemed to be trying to get a better view (while obstructing mine completely). >she tore her ACL last week and goes in for >surgery in a few days. Sorry to say that your partner's condition was *not* obvious to a casual observer, your partner offered no such explanation, and in fact, ignored my request completely, didn't utter a word in response. I was left to assume that your partner was a rude drunk, and I just let it drop... see how perspectives can differ? I'm sorry you thought I was rude, I wish your partner had chosen to explain her predicament to me rather than offer stony silence and then blow my reasonable request all out of proportion in relaying it to you. I'm glad you got seats, and no one else came to stand in front of me, because I wouldn't have wanted anyone to miss a moment of that performance... Laura and the band put on a hell of a show, and once again I think selfishly that she should tour more! 17 months is much, much too long to go without playing a major city like DC, I hope we see her again soon, and I'm sure the packed house at Iota agrees! - -- Deb \\ indigo@mindspring.com \\ http://www.mindspring.com/~indigo ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 20:43:55 EST From: Wbsmiles@aol.com Subject: Re: [octoroon] Iota >>Wow it seems a lot of us were at Iota last night. >Including me, your humble list owner! This would explain the SMOE cards in the restroom! ;o) I was wondering who put those there! I agree, Iota's line-up of acts has progressively gotten better, from only local acts to a nice national line-up. It's basically the set-up to The Birchmere...firt go around acts are at Iota, the next time The Birchmere. (This is so true for both of the other shows I'm seeing this week - - Dan Bern and Great Big Sea). Iota still has some ways to go in some respects, the seating as an example. Every time I go in the tables are set up differently. Usually there are tall tables and stools to sit at as well, and the bench on the left of the stage is fairly new. It's hard to tell how it will be set up. They'll figure out the perfect set up soon enough! But I'll take Iota anyway I can. Smiles, wendy :o) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 22:49:02 -0500 From: "Steve Garrison" Subject: [octoroon] Mo' Iota Since the venue itself has become a topic of sorts, I'll say that this is the first time I've been to Iota when there was a really packed, SRO crowd. The extreme lower limit was my first visit when I saw Michael Fracasso with another half-dozen or so folks (except for Michael's wife I may have been the only person who came specifically intending to see him... he was a pro, though, and sold CDs to just about everyone including the couple who just came in for a burger). But some other excellent shows, including Peter Mulvey, Richard Julian, and Carrie Newcomer were only modestly attended, although I've always found the audiences there appreciative and supportive of the performers. It was great to be part of such a good turnout last night. I saw only the big smiles of truly enchanted show-goers, but apparently I wasn't advantageously seated (hell, I wasn't seated at all, come to think of it). ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V2 #34 *****************************
