Just returned from seeing the Laura band (my first time) at Iota, a club in Arlington, VA. named after an atomic particle of approximately the same size. Absolutely soaked in the energy, wit, and sheer joy of making music. Arrived late because of a prior commitment, but thoroughly enjoyed every minute I was there. Can't give you set lists, comparisons to other shows, or much of anything else because I'm as yet a Laura novice, but the band (Rod Cook, Barbara Lamm or Lamb, and the drummer whose name rhymes with Satan) were tight and energetic and funky as all get out. Consider me a fan. And pleased to make yer acquaintances. Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 01:03:07 EST From: Wbsmiles@aol.com Subject: Re: [octoroon] Iota Hey there Steve! (and the rest of ya!) Next time we'll have to work out an introduction system! Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet up. So glad you had a good time! My third time seeing Laura and crew, and just as great, if not better! While Steve describes the venue as a subatomic particle, I'll describe it as quaint, :o). (and yes, we all know that means small) It is seriously one of my favorite places to see a show, mainly because I've been witness to it's changes thru the years. If you think it's small now Steve....it used to be a third of the size it is now! Unfortunately the crowd has yet to get the concept of respect for opening acts and there was way too much talking thru Christine....I can't remember her last name, started with an H's act (sorry!). The crowd was really into Laura and crew though. Set seemed more geared to Octoroon than to Shum Ticky, and was definitely a little funky (no shock there!). Was a great show though, very upbeat and VERY energetic! I was a little hestitant going in, because of the missing Julie Wolf (1st time seeing Laura without her) but man, it was great, if not better. This really gives Barbara a chance to shine!!! I was so happy to see more of the fiddle!!! In fact picked on a copy of Fiddle Fatale. Next show I pick up some Toads! Okay, that's it for me, next time DC/VA we plan ahead and meet up! Thanks for the review Steve! Smiles, Wendy :o) ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V2 #33 *****************************
