I've been familiar with Ms. Love's music since '96, when i got a free demo/promo cassette of Octoroon w/ one of my CD purchases at Newport Folk Festival. I didn't get to see Laura perform, though, until last summer at the Falcon Ridge Folk Fest. She was absolutely iNcReDibLe (wish she'd play New England more often). At the festival that night, after everyone was done on the main stage, a couple lesser-known artists did a "Cutting Edge of the Campfire" round-robin showcase/jam in the dark by the workshop stage. Jess Klein and Erin McKeown played, as did Pamela Means, Beth Amsel, Sam Pacetti, and others. all were amazing. Has anyone else on this list heard of these artists? If you get a chance to see any of them perform, don't hesitate-- GO. They play mostly in the northeast, but Rose Polenzani is from Chicago and regularly plays the midwest, and they've each made it out to the west coast at one time or another. Jess, Rose, Erin, and Beth Amsel have started up the second leg of their "Voices on the Verge" tour where they do an in-the-round thing-- playing solo and sometimes joining in on each others' songs. It's an absolutely amazing show: unearthly harmonies and rhythm, very distinct sounds each, effortless collaboration, a rare opportunity to catch a batch of truly great up-and-coming performing songwriters on stage at the same time... here are the URLs I know off the top of my head: http://jessklein.com http://pamela-means.com http://rosepolenzani.com http://netspace.org/tvprecords (erin mckeown) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 14:39:55 -0500 From: Deb Subject: [octoroon] Newport Folk Festival Forwarded from the folk_music list... write and tell them you want to see LL at Newport! >Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 05:48:12 -0500 (EST) >From: michael epstein >Subject: Suggestions for Newport Folk Festival > >The web site for the Newport Folk Festival has been partially updated for >'99, and they are asking for performer suggestions. > >(from the website: http://www.newportfolk.com/ ) > Our plans for 1999 our now taking shape. This one has an edge to it. I didn't expect it to be like LLove's music and it wasn't. First off let me say I just love the name of the band. That's humorous in itself. The songs I liked the least are: What's It To Ya it is just irritating to listen to Rhonda The Lesbo Reindeer something about bonkin' Ms. Clause just seems wrong somehow My favorites are: Oh Little Town In Michigan and Jeanette Isabella and it just so happens that LL sings them. The 12 Gays of Christmas Just fun It's Beginning to Look A lot Like Christmas The social commentary is right on. What Child Is This/We Three Kings It's an instrumental and it's lovely. The very best song on the CD is: Myth In Genesis Just have to hear it to understand or have been born a woman. In summary: it is a good novelty CD. One worth having to round out your LLove collection. However it may get more shelf time than playing time. Good for a laugh and of course their voices are lovely. You'll pull it out around the holidays but you probably won't play it with your parents around. I'll have to play it (not dub it) for my lesbian/feminist friends and see what their reactions are. Now when Ms. McFaul sends me a BOOM BOOM GI cd I guess I'll have them all. And Ms. McFaul I am interested in the vinyl, but I have no suggestions as to a safe way to transport it. Any suggestions out there in opinion land? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 14:30:24 -0800 (PST) From: Kyle Heather Subject: [octoroon] Angelique Kidjo > Also listening to an African woman named > Angelique Kidjo who appeared at Lilith Fair here in Albuquerque. Angelique Kidjo is amazing! I was first introduced to her by my high school french teacher, who had a particular interest in Francophone Africa. Angelique's music got me into African music, and world music in general. I would hightly recomend her. She also has a webpage, of which I forget the URL at the moment... but you can find it on Yahoo.com == Kyle Heather http://gossamer.wheatonma.edu/users/kgilbert still_riot@yahoo.com|kgilbert@wheatonma.edu _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I've found a really great search engine that has a very high hit percentage, not just for LL but also just about anything else I've tried on it (is this grammatically correct?) ANYWAY, the engine is GOOGLE and it's address is http://www.google.com. Check it out! (I'm trying to figure out some way to make a related dubbing joke but, fortunately I've been completely unsuccessful) τΏτ Laura ------------------------------ Date: 1 Feb 99 20:46:57 EST From: kedge Subject: [octoroon] newport folk festival requests This has been circulating music lists as of late. for those who haven't seen it yet: Forwarded from the FOLK_MUSIC list: Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 05:48:12 -0500 (EST) From: michael epstein Subject: Suggestions for Newport Folk Festival The web site for the Newport Folk Festival has been partially updated for '99, and they are asking for performer suggestions.
