And you can bet that extra money isn't going >back to Laura. Now there's something to get morally indignant about. Very few products are priced solely on the basis of expense. For one thing, record labels have to spend money taking a chance on artists like LL. They have to spend money on promotion. They support artists who never sell enough to reimburse studio and promotion costs. Unfortunately, not enough of those type of overhead expenses go to music I like, but that's life. Oh, and I notice that the oft-hailed Ani DiFranco doesn't charge any less for her independently-produced CDs than the labels do, she just gets to keep more of the profits, and no one seems to begrudge her that. Regardless, when the prices get high enough that people aren't willing to pay it, the prices will come down. I'm not saying that labels are or should be bastions of philanthropy, just that it's a for-profit business, just like any other, and supply and demand rules. I'm sure you'd be equally appalled at the mark-ups of the products for the company I'm currently consulting with, and I know you have some in your house. :-) - -- Deb \\ indigo@mindspring.com \\ http://www.mindspring.com/~indigo ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Jan 1999 13:44:33 -0800 (PST) From: Kevin Allred Subject: [none] >It's >unfortunate that he chose to re-produce one of Laura's self-produced >projescts, but what I want to know is why noone is upset by the fact >that the record companies charge you more for CDs than tapes, when CDs >are cheaper to produce. Now there's something to get morally indignant about. you know what? cd's are sold more than tapes and independent artists or major label record companies both have to make a profit to remain doing what they are doing. i gladly pay more to get a cd where the sound quality better and easily changing the songs and what not. it doesn't really matter what. kevin _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Whew, isn't that a relief?! Thought I'd introduce another topic -- let's hear about other artists that you Laura folks listen to! I was just listening to a woman named Sinead Lohan who has a great album out called "No Mermaid." In the Celtic but modern mode. Very soothing, dreamy, poetic. Also just bought an album by a band called "Calexico" that does mostly instrumental numbers that are, as their name suggests, Californio/Mexican tinged (although they seem to be from Tucson). Sorta slow and sultry with a bit of spice. Also listening to an African woman named Angelique Kidjo who appeared at Lilith Fair here in Albuquerque. Terrific stuff with exciting percussion and unusual African beats and language. Love a wide range of music, both in style and in timeline, but this is a start anyway. Anyone else want to confess their other musical loves so we can all share? (By the way right now I am listening to Shum Ticky on my computer CD player and it's wonderful, as we all know!) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Jan 1999 21:16:09 -0800 From: The Scotts Subject: [octoroon] remove me from this list ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V2 #17 *****************************
