It beats all the junk I usually get on line. Here's my story...I'm 41 yo and live in Charlotte, NC. Originally from Elmira, NY. I do landscape design and plant installation of wildlife habitats. So LL when your ready to do Longfellow Creek let me know. I have a 12 year old daughter who since hearing LL can't seem to stop playing her stuff. Her comment is "It's just so good that you play it over and over until you think you'll throw up if you hear it one more time, and then you play it again." To date she hasn't thrown up though. I was a chaperone on my daughters field trip to Washington, DC with her class. We happened to be in a gift shop at one of the attractions and I was looking through the CD's they had. I came across one called Woman's Work. It is a compilation of various women and part of the proceeds were to go to woman's grassroots organizations. I didn't recognize any of the names except Janis Ian. On a whim I decided to get it. I had to borrow a fifth graders personal CD player to check it out. It is all very good but I really liked the tune sung by LL. If You Leave Me. Months went by before I received the mailing for Merle Fest and there she was. LL playing at a bluegrass festival. I wouldn't have gone except I was interested in hearing more of her stuff. There was no place in Charlotte that had even heard of LL let alone have any of her music. LL played with John Cowen, Molly O'Brien, Julie Wolf, Barbara, Ron and I can't remember the drummer but I don't think it was Chris. It was fan-tastic she stole the whole festival. They did off the cuff stuff on the spur of the moment and I went directly over and bought one of each of the CD's she had for sale. The sales tent was a mob scene, everyone wanted to tell her how great she and the band were. I started turning all my friends on to her and everyone just loved her stuff. The next year she was a big hit at Merle Fest. I met a woman just before the show that I thought was going to give me a lecture about my letting my daughter skip school to come up on Friday to see LL but she just laughed and said she was playing hooky too. She teaches at a nearby school system. I do believe that LL fans are everybody who hears her sing. I again got to see her at the Black Mt. Music fest. I missed her 4 times though since then because I found out about the shows after they happened by 1 day. I was depressed for days. I hope the Bloomington show goes off as planned. I have a sister in Indianapolis I will have to go and visit and take her to the show. So Ms. McFaul if you read these things make my day! I have had many a conversation with LL and at Black Mt. I found my daughter and LL just strolling along chatting. It was so great to see that. Thank you LL. Most of her friends aren't into LL's music. The musicians they like they will never meet let alone become friends with. LL is so uncool (which means cool) that way. And for the record LL we do respect your big bootay. Glad to see your not caught up in worshipping the goddess of thinness. You have proven a woman can be gifted, talented and successful without kissing up to mens fantasies. Before this becomes a book...if anyone hears of LL coming to the Southeast please email me and let me know so I don't miss any more. I was listening to and playing Laura on KRCL in Salt Lake years before NPR ever did a story on her. I appreciate everything public stations do (KRCL and KUER - the public station in Salt Lake, have a very close relationship), but keep in mind that most public stations are classical and jazz oriented and don't even play "alternative" music, or folk or pop, although when they do a story it's great! Community stations do play alternative stuff, so please be sure and support your community station if you have one (yes, they need your FINANCIAL support as well as your requests), they are vital to independent artists and to those of us who just don't want to hear the commercial hits over and over and over and.... That's my 2 cents worth... I'll get off my soap box now. Take care, y'all! Bobbi _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I actually learned about laura through my mom(my parents have amazing taste in music!) But I also heard about her from a public radio station near me, WFUV(the coolest station ever...all folk musci!) Laura is amazing. Her musci is so different than anything I've ever heard, and I'm so sick of the same old thing. I haven't seen her live yet, but when she comes to nyc, I'll be there in a sec! I'm a musician. I'm a jazz trumpet player, and I play guitar and a bit of bass(guitar and bass all self-taught!) My goal is to play jazz/folk music. Hopefully someday I'll be playing at the same festivals as laura. I called the Wetlands but the woman who answered didn't seem to know anything. I guess there is not enough demand in the apple for Laura. I was going to bring a group of people who have never heard her. Maybe she'll stop in this summer. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 14:02:36 -0800 (PST) From: Kevin Allred Subject: [octoroon] question hey! it's my first time posting. i'm 18 and i live in utah, i guess that's good for an intro. i was reading how everyone was talking about julie wolf's song "if you leave me", but it's on a collection i have and it says it was written by laura. how come everyone refers to it as julie's song? by the way, julie's awesome on the new ani difranco album. just in case anyone wondered. kevin _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I really would like them to feature her in a concert review, but they don't know her. I was looking around their web site and found an article on Jewel and Paula Cole. At the end of the article there's a short survey asking who you think is the most significant female artist today and asks for comments. I, of course, mentioned Laura. If you would like to participate, log on to www.rollingstone.com and choose the Jewel/Paula Cole article. At the end of the article there is a response box and you can send your thoughts, requests, etc. Also, did anyone out there attend the "1960-1999, History of Women In Music" at Madison Square Garden the other night? I'd like to hear some other opinions - RS pretty much slammed it. Hey Bobbi and LL fans! Here Here! to community radio. Anyone in KVMR's reach can call me next Tuesday early morning (4-7am) and request LL! I usually don't need a request for me to play a LL song, but if you call I'll play several! Nothin' better than waking up to Laura Love! KVMR is located in Nevada City, CA, and can be heard through most of the central valley (Sacramento, Stockton, Oroville, etc.) as well as many of the communities along the I-80 corridor between Vallejo and Donner Summit. Since Laura Love isn't mainstream, she's not of interest. That's my view/opinion of it anyway. I read an issue here and there, but overall, just nto worth buying regularly. Anestis. My wife and I and about 5000 other people loved her on the main stage and workshops. We're hoping that the Iron Horse date becomes real. If so we'll be there. The will probably be a great crowd at the Horse from her Falcon Ridge exposure and local radio play as she is played fairly frequently by WRSI in Greenfield, MA, WEQX from Albany, NY/Manchester, VT, Is there any word as to whether she'll be back at Falcon Ridge? We live in the Berkshires in W. PS I saw a Putayamo CD that has Julie Wolf's song "If you Leave Me", as performed by LLB. Does LL band still play this song in concert since Julie left the band? >> FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL, let me set you all straight on this. "If You Leave Me" was written by Laura and recorded on the CD, Pangaea. Julie did not write the song, does not appear on that album and, as far as I know, has never performed it, other than singing backup with Laura. Laura sings the lead on the song. I don't know why this was ever referred to as "Julie's" song, but it is not hers. I think it was just one of those simple errors and I would like to correct it before it goes around the world another time. Now, stop it! And yes, the song is on the active set list. She performed the song long before Julie was in the band and she plays it now that she's gone. She doesn't do it every night, but it still pops up.
