I first heard Laura Love in Bloomington IN when I was a student at IU and she was playing the Lotus World Music Festival there. What joy. She played two shows both years she was there and was definitely one of the highlights. Lucky for me, B-CAT (the local cable channel) used to re-air Laura's shows every few weeks. I'm now living in Washington DC and working on welfare at the Urban Institute. I'm anxiously awaiting Laura's arrival in March. A. Bricker" Subject: [octoroon] Boom Boom G.I. and other stuff. Hi, My name is Tom. I live in Madison, Wisconsin. I first heard Laura on NPR a while ago (like many others it seems). I immediately went out and bought the CD that was mentioned (Octoroon I think). I now have many of her other CDs. I like Statue a lot. I don't think there are any songs that I do not like. I would like to know how to get Laura to play in Madison. There is a venue here called the Barrymore Theater where I think she would be perfect, but since I am not a promoter (I am not connected to the music industry at all) I have no idea what is involved. I just think many folks in Madison would love to see her in person. I am not sure how much air time she gets on our "alternative" radio station (WORT). > Laura described Boom Boom G.I. as being her "grunge" band. (I listened to this cd again yesterday and I > would call it "light grunge"). When I told her that several people on this list were interested in obtaining > copies of this cd > she laughed hard and said she had many copies still at her home. > Laura said for those who want to buy it from her just send her email. > I am very interested in obtaining this CD. Would someone please tell me how to contact Laura to request it, or let me know who else to contact? Octoroon probably would have been one of them. There were no time constraints, just an inexperienced lighting crew. The band was in the wings, ready to go back, then the applause just died, so they went home. It never occurred to me to give house light/encore instructions to the crew. It's about the most basic thing in the world. When the crew realized later what they had done, they felt pretty bad, but they'll probably not make that mistake again. Oh well... <> Give him a break, he just got out of the Navy, he deserves to be a little greasy for the first time in four years! :-) He does remind me a little of Shawn Mullins, now that you mention it. I hadn't thought of that. <> Even though Seattle is Laura's home town, it's just like any other road gig in the sense that we can't play too often in any one place, or we wear out our welcome. Also, we're touring so often that we don't have time to play Seattle more than once or twice a year. But make sure that the operators of the venues hear that you want her back again, so they know there is demand. This goes for any gig in any city. It's not me that needs to know that you want Laura in your town - it's the local promoters, media and radio stations that need to hear from you the most. Then, when we call, they think, "yeah, I just got 10 calls about Laura, maybe we should book her". If I call and they've never heard from you, they'll just blow me off - "yeah, yeah, another manager with a 'great' artist looking for a gig. What else is new?" Thanks for your help. Don't send Boom Boom GI requests to Laura, send them to me. There is a small stash here and we would be happy to send them out as long as you understand THIS IS NOT ANYTHING LIKE A LAURA LOVE ALBUM. Laura did not write any of the material. Boom Boom GI is a noisy blues/grunge band. Yeah, it's a lot lighter than most, but it has that characteristic "dirty" guitar sound that overshadows the vocals, which she sort of shouts/sings and was produced by Jack Endino, who has a lot of grunge credits to his name. Some of the lyrics are a bit questionable (if you can understand them) but some are pretty cool. Although these albums are not what you would normally associate with Laura, I love them. It gives you a great historical perspective on her and it's fun to see what she was doing before. There could be some collector's value in the release some day, but who knows?. I really like the title cut of "Don't Know What I'll Wear". I just thought it was this groovin' rock tune, then when I finally discerned the lyrics, I realized it was kind of an environmental/futuristic sort of thing. Here's some of the lyrics: "I've heard that it's taking truckloads of money To fund this bachanalian feast Little piggies squealing with their dicks in the air, Real estate for relative ease. I don't know just what I'll wear for the sunrise on the western shore Some people say that everyday there's a sunrise on the western shore I don't know. I know you'll come in greens and golds With your halo tilting over your eyes And in the last row of a faded movie show We'll drink beer and socialize.... In Japanese" I love this album. Others might not. If you want to take a chance, you can order it but I don't want to deal with returns if it's not your cup of tea. If you don't like it, give it away, or put it on the bottom of your CD stack and wait for it to become collectible. There are actually two BBGI titles, but Don't Know What I'll Wear is the only one available on CD. I have some vinyl on both titles, but I don't really want to sell those unless there is a big demand, because I don't have a way to ship them safely. So, if you want to order Don't Know What I'll Wear, either e-mail or call me with the following info: Your name, shipping address, daytime phone number Visa/Mastercard number and expiration date Title (Don't Know What I'll Wear, or any other Laura title) CDs are $16, plus $2.50 shipping/handling for the first item, plus .50 for each item after the first. If you want to phone in the order, call toll free 877/LAURACD and include ALL the above information, especially your phone number so we can call if there is a problem. If you want to mail in your order, send a check to Laura Love, POB 46318, Seattle, WA 98146 and include all the above info. Ok? Ok. I can't help but pass that dialogue on (excuse my paraphrasing). Laura Love Band (LLB) plays "Mah Bootay" and the song that includes the lyric "who's got a big ol' butt- ah?" Babs: Yes I did. And I learned some foreign languages too. Like I learned the Italian for suppository. You know what that is? LL: No. Babs: It's "innuendo". Audience: Riotous Laughter. See you there. Wonder if Laura will show up if she's still in town.... By the way, the song that's sticking in my head the most after seeing two LLB concerts this week is Rod's "Train, train" that the band performed. It's awesome. Now that I own all of LL's library (BBGI aside), I can start collecting the other stuff. PS I saw a Putayamo CD that has Julie Wolf's song "If you Leave Me", as performed by LLB.
