My name is Amy Mackey, a 31yo Bassist. My band was on tour couple years ago in the southwest when I heard the interview and went out and got "The Laura Love Collection". The next day in Las Cruces, NM the engine in our van blew up so we were stuck there for a month, it's a good thing I had some great music to listen too. Now whenever I hear anything from that CD, I picture New Mexico. New Mexico is a great place to be stuck, I live in Jersey now and miss the sun very much! I got "Octoroon" in Amarillo TX and "Shum Ticky" in northern Virginia. The Laura Love Band goes well with any landscape! The band I tour with is a vaudvillish cover dance band called the Little Zippers. I play with an original pop dance band here in New Jersey called First 2 Earth. We just recorded a demo so if anyone is interested e-mail me at groovestir@msn.com with a mailing address and I'll send you a free tape in return for some constructive criticism. I CAN'T WAIT TILL MARCH!!!! I plan to go to as many northeast shows as I can, I hope the Iron Horse show in Northampton MA is definate! Thats a great club. If anyone from DC to Maine want to caravan or car pool to the shows, maybe we can get a whole group together. It was nice to see her again and she played "Bang Bang" which made me very happy. Most touching was all the very silly and fun conversation between Laura and Barbara. Laura said they all had been getting over a cold last week and so now were in a giddy mood as a result and it showed. The crowd was in a good mood though this space does not allow room for dancing. Opening act was Richard Kirkman, a Seattle native, who had won a national song writing performance contest in Colorado the previous year. Laura had met him there and requested that he open for this performance. He is a quite good singer and I was told his style (and cute looks) are similar to Shawn Mullins. After the performance for those that stuck around they gave away free promo flats for Shum Ticky, which Laura was signing. I got to see her again and chat for a few minutes. She also signed my Boom Boom G.I. cd cover. Laura described Boom Boom G.I. as being her "grunge" band. (I listened to this cd again yesterday and I would call it "light grunge"). When I told her that several people on this list were interested in obtaining copies of this cd she laughed hard and said she had many copies still at her home. Laura said for those who want to buy it from her just send her email. - --drew ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 12:36:55 -0800 (PST) From: David Doody Subject: Re: [octoroon] Boom Boom GI/Seattle Performance Again, I'll add my $.02. :) On Sun, 24 Jan 1999, Drew Lienau wrote: > I saw Laura perform last night at the Shoreline Community College. My friend was very disappointed she didn't play Octoroon, though. :( And I'd love to hear her do Blind Bartimus again... Most disappointing about the show was the fact that the house managers brough up the lights immediately after she finished. No encore!! :( :( *Way* disappointing. Was there a time restraint or contractual agreement or something? I thought it was really odd, since the crowd obviously loved her... > The crowd was in a good mood though this space does not allow room for > dancing. Last year, people stood in the aisles and danced, and I think this year's crowd was a little more subdued overall. And they (we) gave up *way* too early after the show...we should have insisted on an encore. > Opening act was Richard Kirkman, a Seattle native, who had won a > national song writing performance contest in Colorado the previous year. > Laura had met him there and requested that he open for this performance. > He is a quite good singer and I was told his style (and cute looks) are > similar to Shawn Mullins. Jonathan Kingham, actually. But I'd agree with the rest, not that I've ever seen Shawn Mullins... Jonathan was cuter w/o the greased hair, but he's still a good writer with a nice style...And I couldn't believe it when he addressed the whole "Is he gay?" issue regarding his last song. I guess my friend and I weren't the only ones whose gaydar had gone off when he sang that song before. I hope Laura comes back around these parts soon to perform again... I also wondered the same thing about Johnathan. During intermission I went up to Johnathan and said I agreed with the naval officer and I found that song very homoerotic (it certainly did have some vivid images). He said that he had never thought of the song in that way before the officer pointed it out but he saw it afterwards. I was impressed that if he is straight he didn't have to make that clear after raising the issue "is he gay?". And I liked his hair :) Laura also talked how her bronchitis was good for one thing. He coughing frightened to cat enough to not spray the walls. *laugh* And I also was upset there was no encore. We gave up the fight too easily. - --drew ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V2 #11 *****************************
