Someone was asking who else was on the list and then a couple people introduced themselves, so I figured I'd follow suit and reintroduce myself. I'm a 20 year old college student, currently residing between Boston and Providence, Rhode Island... although originally from northern New Hampshire. I'm a german major, and have always had a strong interest in languages and other cultures. It was the internationalness of Laura's music that first attracted me to it, through a magazine review of Octoroon when it came out. I have a growing collection of what americans have dubbed "world" music, which I very much enjoy listening to, but Laura's music has made me realize that it is in fact more accuratly called foreign music.... her music is truly world music, without the quotes, since it is a true blend of many diverse styles from around the globe. Her sound is so unique. She continues to be one of my favorites. == Kyle Heather http://gossamer.wheatonma.edu/users/kgilbert still_riot@yahoo.com|kgilbert@wheatonma.edu _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Hi All - I recently moved to Orlando, but the "cool" I'm referring to is not weather related, I'm wondering where the hip places in the Orlando area are. I was surprised moving here from Salt Lake City, Utah, to find that the "hip" venue here is the Hard Rock Cafe! Please - if anyone knows where the truly hip people hang out, I would appreciate being enlightened. They don't even have a community radio station here! It's such a relief to get on line and see postings from the LL list. I'd really like to hook up with some folks who are like minded (you know, who appreciate music other than top 40? Like Laura Love...). Thanks - Feeling "out to sea" in the Sunshine State... Bobbi _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? She is so much fun in concert! I'll start with the song list, so you know what you missed if you weren't there... ;-) Please forgive and correct any mistakes. My memory is like a sieve... Amazing Grace Anyway Woe Is Me Mahbootay Give Me Five Always All The Pushin' I Am Wondering A Ha Me A Riddle The Road To Silverdale - Barbara Lamb Mystery Train - Rod Cook Bad Feeling (I'm not positive about this one) Can't Understand I'm A Givin' Way Octoroon The Clapping Song Put A Little Love In Your Heart - -Encore High Divide Oh My friends and I did go to Hattie's Hat before the concert, and Laura and the band were just leaving as we sat down. I've never been much of a meatloaf fan until now (wonderful flavor, and the Guinness gravy was great), and the portabello mushroom sandwich was also excellent. I have to say that this concert was much more enjoyable than the last one (Kit Kat Theater), mostly due to the fact that there wasn't a drunk trying to have a buddy-buddy conversation with Laura during the concert this time. However, someplace to sit occasionally would have been nice... First off , it just isn't a live concert without something going wrong... They must not have practiced one piece, because before the started it (I forgot which one), Laura asked forgiveness for any sour notes, and sure enough... Then they started giggling... Only Laura can make you enjoy the mistakes. :-) Then there was the time when Barbara's chin rest fell off her violin. :-) I once dropped my bow during a concert, so I know how that feels... And, of course, it wouldn't be a Laura Love concert without some cat jokes. The Strict Rules About Stray Cats 1. Stray cats will not be fed. 2. Stray cats will not be fed anything but dry cat food. 3. Stray cats will not be fed anything but dry cat food with a little milk. 4. Stray cats will not be fed anything but dry cat food with a little warm milk and whatever scraps and tidbits are lying around. ... The piece off of Barbara's album ("The Road To Silverdale") was a fiddler's showcase, and she played it to the hilt! Ron's (or as Laura called him, "Mr. October", for his Acoustic Guitar cover photo) piece ("Mystery Train") was just as much a showcase for him. They are both extreamly impressive musicians, and now I have to go find their albums, too. The Clapping Song was done by request, and at first they were just going to skip the rap part, but the person who requested it offered to do the part, and Laura let him! His rhythm was a bit off, but he got most of the words, and everyone really enjoyed the song. I think we were all just a bit jealous that he got to sing with Laura. At least, I was... :-) I tried to get her to do a second encore ("One More!!!"), because I REALLY wanted to hear "Nelson", but it didn't work. Oh, well. It was still a WONDERFUL night of music! My friend and I also took Mary McFaul's suggestion and dined at Hattie's Hat pre-concert. Didn't have the guts to approach Ms. Love while she was dining, and figured it would have been rude anyway. :) > I have to say that this concert was much more enjoyable than the last > one (Kit Kat Theater) I couldn't make the KKT show, unfortunately. For me, this show wasn't quite as great as some others, due to the fact that the stage was so small...Laura seemed a little confined and her funky dancing wasn't quite as animated as it often is. But of course, she put on a great show as always and it was quite enjoyable... > However, someplace to sit occasionally would have been nice... I thought they did a great job of having half the floor for those who wish to stand and half for those who wish to sit. No better way to accomodate those different styles. But you had to get there early to get a seat... A big THANK YOU to whomever was responsible for making this a non-smoking show. It was so great to not have to throw my clothes away after this concert. > They must not have practiced one piece, because before the > started it (I forgot which one), Laura asked forgiveness for any sour > notes, and sure enough... Then they started giggling... Only Laura can > make you enjoy the mistakes. :-) Um, it was more than one piece. :) This was their first time playing together in months, and they made lots of mistakes on several songs. But that's what makes live music so exciting for me. It was fun to see them acknowledge each other when they realized something didn't go quite right, but they kept playing and still sounded great! I'm sure a lot of people didn't realize it wasn't quite what they were planning on doing. I was LOL when Barbara came in *way* early in one song with a big solo. They just grinned and continued... > And, of course, it wouldn't be a Laura Love concert without some cat > jokes. The Strict Rules About Stray Cats I actually preferred the "we have a lot in common" joke...i.e. "I'm an octoroon and she's an octogenarian..." And I *so* wanted her to play the "kitties on the bed and I can't see the TV" song after she told the jokes... > The piece off of Barbara's album ("The Road To Silverdale") was a > fiddler's showcase, and she played it to the hilt! This was a very strong one, and got *great* crowd response. I thought their improvised "duelling" during the encore was fantastic. Stuff like that just can't be repeated, and is what makes live concerts really special... > The Clapping Song was done by request, and at first they were just going > to skip the rap part, but the person who requested it offered to do the > part, and Laura let him! And while he sounded nothing like Sir Mixalot, it actually came off pretty well and the crowd seemed to like it. I was glad they played that one, as that's the only song my friend had heard (thanks to the website) before the show... Great show once again by Laura and the band! Can't wait to see them Saturday night at Shoreline CC, on a nice big stage... When she whipped into that funk/bluegrass line for Barbara's song I 'bout dropped my teeth. Guess I've got a ways to go... Note to beginners: if you want to learn that funk style be sure to take it easy at first and don't play too long or hit/snap any harder than you have to to get the sound.
