I am going to the February show in Socorro, New Mexico but have not heard a word about the Folk Alliance Showcase that is listed for Albuquerque the day before and after that gig. Does anyone know anything about this appearance by Laura? Thanks alot, and it's great to be a new member of the list! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 02:44:43 EST From: MMcfaul805@aol.com Subject: [octoroon] Folk Alliance gigs In answer to BassBrain about the Folk Alliance gigs in Albuquerque mentioned in Laura's recent itinerary. This is a showcase associated with the annual Folk Alliance conference taking place in Albuquerque this year. It is technically only open to conference attendees which is why I don't list a lot of information about it. If you are at the conference you will get all the particulars, however, I'm not sure if this private showcase is "behind the front lines". That is, I don't know if you will need conference credentials to get to this particular showcase, and I won't know until I'm there. So, for anyone who is in the Albuquerque area and wants to take a chance on seeing Laura and some other folks do a SHORT set, here's a rough outline: On Thursday, 2/25, Laura and Band will showcase at the Hyatt Hotel Grand Pavillion III at 11pm and 12:25am. Also featured are a great, big voiced, spirited woman named Joules Graves and a cool pop/folk band called Relish (featuring Dave Keenan and Nova Devonie for any Ranch Romance fans out there). It's free and it will go by fast. Laura might also showcase on Saturday, 2/27 but that is tentative right now. Keep in mind that you might show up and get turned away without a conference ID, but then again, you might get to see a REALLY intimate show for free. Of course, you could also attend the conference and see a ton of fabulous artists of every stripe for four solid days. There are "official" showcases Thurs, Fri, Sat; "private" showcases every night; and "guerilla" showcases in every nook and cranny of The Albuquerque Convention Center all day and all night each day. There is also a full schedule of panels and workshops, films, dances, special interest groupmembership in the North American Folk Alliance for anyone interested in performing, presenting, writing about, broadcasting, or hanging around folk music and dance. Remember, "folk" is a hugely wide category - don't forget, the mainstay of Laura's career is the folk festival circuit and folk-based radio. Folk music is just music made by folks, so don't get scared by the title. Anyone interested in joining the organization (cheap dues) or attending the conference 2/25-28, should call 202/835-3655, email fa@folk.org, or visit the website at http://www.folk.org. See you in Albuquerque! Mary ------------------------------ End of octoroon-digest V2 #5 ****************************
