I have listened to ST and find it to be another total groove of the heart from Laura. Still taking in all the new songs my favorites are Mah Booty, Pununctured and Hissing, as well as the cover song ST. Life is alot more tolerable when you have Laura to listen to. I knew it was too good to be true... they haven't updated her page yet, but they have added a bio and Shum Ticky info to the new releases page. It was only a year or so ago that a Mercury rep discouraged me from setting up an LL Web page, as it would compete with theirs, on which they planned to add sound clips and pictures and such any day now... until that happens, you're better off going to for up-to-date info. - -- Deb \\ indigo@mindspring.com \\ http://www.mindspring.com/~indigo ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Oct 1998 19:14:43 -0700 From: "Miller, John P" Subject: [octoroon] San Fran show As Nora said: >Just saw Laura on Sunday night in San Francisco....what a treat. Yes, Laura and her always-tight band are one of my favorite live acts, always a treat, and I can depend on them to lift my spirits. Several of us used Laura's show to celebrate a friend's birthday. The venue was the famous Great American Music Hall, a former bordello built after the 1906 San Francisco quake, later to be made notorious by Sally Rand and her 'fan' dances... with beautiful marble columns supporting an ornate balcony on three of the four walls, an excellent sound system, and a stage which is only 24 inches above the floor, all these help provide an elegant and intimate setting in which to see live music. The band was in especially high spirits (they had been playing serious tourists before the show, and it was the last night of the west coast portion of their tour), but they never lost their professionalism: when Laura had severe feedback during "Anyway", she never lost a beat, completed the song while analyzing the cause, then corrected the problem by moving her microphone a mere four inches further from her monitor... end of problem. >The fiddle player is excellent. I really *miss* seeing/hearing Julie with Laura (guess I will have to be content seeing her with Ani DiFranco), but I agree that Barbara Lamb's fiddle-playing is superb! I especially loved her solo, "Say Old Man". For those interested... the setlist: Amazing Grace Anyway (feedback problems) Woe Is Me Mahbootay Give Me Five Come As U R All The Pushing I Am Wondering Aha Me A Riddle Say Old Man (Barbara Lamb) Mystery Train (Rod Cook) Bad Feeling Can't Understand Octaroon High Divido Encore ====== Put A Little Love Bang Bang If there are any other Bay Area fans here who missed the announcement, Laura and band will return to northern California in late November: 19 Nov Monterey (Morgan's ?) 20 Nov Santa Cruz (Palookaville) 21 Nov Chico (Brick Works ?) 22 Nov Davis (Palms Playhouse) One more note... opening was Joules Graves, a solo act playing feminist 'tribal folk' who had completely won my heart the previous Sunday when she opened for Ferron at Palookaville... it appears she had a similar effect on several at this show, as I saw many people after the show buying her CDs at the merchandise table... more info on Joules Graves can be found at: John Miller San Jose CA ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Oct 1998 22:49:25 -0400 From: "Edward Cairns" Subject: Re: [octoroon] Shum Ticky I LOVE IT! - -----Original Message----- From: Deb To: Laura Love List Date: Tuesday, October 06, 1998 10:29 PM Subject: [octoroon] Shum Ticky >Am I the only one who bought the CD last week, or all you all still absorbing?! > >I'm very pleased to say that I think ST is even better than "Octoroon." >I'm actually surprised to hold that opinion so soon... when I love an album >like I love "Octoroon," the follow-up is almost always a let-down, at least >until I've had time to give it a fair listen on its own merits.
