Well, since no one has been writing on this list lately, I guess I better give my review of the Lyons Folks Festival. Before I do, however, I have to admit that I'm glad people don't write their every thought on this list. A co-worker of mine is on another list, and I'm sorry, but these people just go on and on about whatever, and not necessarily the subject at hand. They find these clever ways of saying how their experience is related to (I won't name the group) because its all about life, man, and our universal experience. Oh, puhleese. Get on with your life, and quit wasting my time! Okay, now that I'm through with that tirade..... The Folks Fest in Lyons was fabulous. Laura, along with Natalie McMaster and Karen Savoca were the highlights for me. Laura has an amazing energy and all of you who have seen her know what I mean. If you haven't, I trust you will soon. She's been touring a lot this summer, and hopefully will continue to do so. It's great fun to watch her and to hear her little quips (especially about her cats!). Mollie and Tim O'Brien were also at the Festival, and when Mollie came up on stage to sing with Laura - it was like she'd died and gone to heaven! She was so cute - bowing to Mollie and acknowledging her talent. You could tell she was just totally in awe and she was even a little flustered by the whole experience. But soon she was back on track and wailing up a storm. Don't miss Natalie McMaster if she's ever in your area. She's fab. Plays the fiddle and never stops moving - dances all over the stage, jigs and all. Great stuff. All in all, it was a great experience, and the setting is gorgeous. I highly recommend this festival if you are "in the neighborhood." We drove from Salt Lake (about 12 hours with some road construction delays), and it was well worth it. I, like all of you am awaiting the new album with baited breath (yes, she did the big ol' booty song, too!). On the other hand, I have to say that music for me can be intensely spiritual, espcially John Coltrane . . . A Love Supreme knocks me on my ass everytime I listen to it, and anymore, I can't just have Coltrane as background music as I cook or read the paper, I always just give in and just listen, "Central Park West" and "Equinox" are two pieces, quiet and still that he did just before his whole sound exploded, that really tap my soul too . . . But I guess I can't really communicate what I feel without sounding like some cheese-ball. A great friend of mine feels this way about Charles "Fingers" Mingus [THE bass player of the 20th century, Eric, ;-) ] . . . but enough with all this jazz, Laura Love does the same thing to me, but not with me sitting on my butt and doing the head trip thing, but with making me move and shake into next week. Same with Natalie MacMaster too; I saw both Laura and Natalie at the Philly Folk Fest last year, but sadly, as far as I know neither is playing this year (three days hence).
