Friends, 
I have a slightly different perspective on this "It doesn't really matter what
she is" discussion that is going on on this list. 
As the lesbian mom of two girls, ages 7 and 10, it matters a great deal to me
that not only is Laura a lesbian, but that she doesn't do anything to hide it.
There are so many gay-hating influences in our culture, especially these days
with the upsurge of the religious right,  that for any public figure to come
out is an act of bravery that we can all learn from.  I'm so thankful to have
her as a "role model" for my kids, because whether they end up gay, straight,
or otherwise, it's the courage to be who you are in a world that would rather
you were different that's the real deal.
