This seems a little unfair to those of you that are coming a distance because you cannot purchase tix by phone with a credit card. These nice folks have decided to give me permission to issue a coupon for the show which will allow you to purchase the door ticket at the advance price of $15. Please print and bring the coupon below to the Lancaster show this Saturday. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Joyeaux Noel, and may 2002 be better than 2001 in all ways, shapes and forms. Like all of you, we've been shocked and depressed and confused by the events of this fall. But whats true for me always is true for me these days. True North is smiling at people I pass on the street, keeping in touch with my family and friends, being grateful for the beautiful cloudbank over the Connecticut river at 7am, delighting in the amazingly balmy weather, walking my dog through the cornfields and watching her hop over the squash vines. Rubbing her ears even if Im so stressed that I see her innocent ignorant puppiness as irritating rather than winsome. Fearing the worst will not make your last days on earth happy ones. Not that these are the last days on earth, but if they were to be, Id rather spend them laughing and dancing than frozen in fetal position in my closet. The Dalai Lama said: The Chinese took my homeland, burned our monasteries and killed our families. Am I to let them take my happiness and serenity too? Which isnt to say that I am taking my own advice (as usual). I am fearful as the next one. Right after Sept. 11, Katryna and I became convinced that no one was going to come out and see live music ever again and that we would starve and Amelia would have to eat grasshoppers. But ke garne as they say in Nepal: what can you do? You can make a record. You can take the golden opportunity handed to you by the gods and by Rounder Records to put something down on shiny CD to remember this time in your life. You can keep a journal and hope that some of it makes sense so you can read the not-too-personal portions of it aloud to your descendants. You can laugh when your sister sticks her tongue out sideways, points her knee in the direction of the door and pretends to hold a baton horizontally and then makes like Fred Flintstone into the vocal booth at the studio. You can rejoice as the five month old baby smiles her curly grin at everyone she encounters, not knowing anything at all about airplanes, terrorists, diets, the stock market, smart bombs or even diplomacy. She just knows that it feels good to be held and kissed; that its really fun to roll over even though it requires a lot of effort and grunting, and that every day has something so fascinating that the most compelling thing to do is just to watch it go by, and when you get the chance, reach out your hand and try to touch it. So about our record. Katryna and I just finished our very first and its called Love and China. I know I always say our albums are great and thats because #1 thats my job and #2 its good to have self confidence and high self esteem and #3 its true. But this CD has defied all previous held expectations and lifted our hearts and hopes into the stratosphere (by the way, did you see that meteorite shower in November??) Many thanks to Dave Chalfant who acted as producer, guitarist, bassist, otherist, button pusher, level changer, insomniac, reassurer and father all at once. The album also features many other stellar musicians and the following songs: Ticket to My House Yesterdays Girl Love Me One More Time Tailspin I Havent Got A Thing The Sweetness He Loves the Road Love and China Christmas Carol This Happens Again & Again All These Years Heading Home Eulogy for Emma New State of Grace Zoe/Rounder plans on releasing Love and China on March 5. O wondrous palladromatic year! Already things are looking up. The snow fell here, finally, in western Massachusetts, and everything seems new and gleaming clean, at least for the next five minutes before the snow mobilers plunge into the field across the street and make tracks down to the river. But I won't be crabby about it; instead I'll make use of their tracks and follow with my dog, glad to not have to get my socks too wet. Katryna and I are pretty psyched for the soon to be released Love and China. We went all glam for the photos and look like virtual movie stars. ("Can't you use the photo I took of you when you were eight and ten?" my father wants to know. "You looked so cute then." ) And I have to admit, I feel a little weird using these gorgeous shots. Aren't I a feminist? Aren't I all about how little appearences ought to matter, how this focus on the outer instead of the inner is the disease eating away at 21st Century Woman? But as Nelson Mandela said in 1994, "Who are you NOT to be gorgeous? You're a child of God." Yeah, Ok. Still, I feel the compulsion coming on to utter a disclaimer: just be warned, we're not ALWAYS going to look this pretty. All things must pass, I keep telling myself as I discover a gray hair on my partline. The problem with getting all glammed up is that you raise expectations and I am totally ALLERGIC to high expectations. I'm afraid you'll come to our shows and say, "Where are those models from the photos?" But I don't think that's why you all are in with us anyhow. I think maybe you like to hear us sing. So sing we do, and sing we will, at the Barns of Wolftrap, a magical room in Northern VA right down the road from where we grew up. Sing we will at the Fez in NYC, our new fave room in Manhattan. Sing we will at Sanders Theatre, a room in Cambridge that resembles the inside of Benjamin Franklin's writing desk, according to either Cheryl Wheeler or John Gorka (not sure which one.) And sing we shall all through these snowy months leading up to Love and China. (March 5, March 5!) Thank you for your letters and thoughts. We are feeling especially blessed in getting to meet more and more of you these days. And please stay warm and hug each other good. Your usual scribe has handed the proverbial pen over to me for the month. I plan on running amok with it. Not really... Today is Dave's birthday and he, Amelia and I have spent the day indoors thanks to the ice storm raging outside. Seems like days with nothing to do are few and far between lately. Plus, Amelia has started to sleep through the night and we are all in a celebratory mood as a result. Especially Amelia. Since it is Dave's birthday, I can't help but remember where we were each year on this day. I can't believe it was FOUR years ago that we were playing with Doc Watson and Paula Cole at the Benefit concert for the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI. Time flies. Speaking of time flying, it is almost time for our record to come out. Just ONE more month of waiting til you can get Love and China is in a store near you. I have never listened to a record of ours more than I have listened to this one. Amelia loves it. It calms her when we drive. Recently we've brought it inside to help her fall asleep in her very own bed so I listen to it every night. I really love this record and I cannot wait for all of you to hear it. Nerissa, Amelia and I are about to hit the road. On Sunday we drive west. Our first stop is Pittsburgh where Amelia will see her Great Grandmother (!) After that we head to Cincinnati and Louisville where we have the honor of opening a couple of shows for the wonderfully eccentric band, Cake. Patty tells us that this has been "in the works" for years, but our schedules have never allowed it till now. We are thrilled to be getting this opportunity. Plus I bought two CD's of Eddie Izzard doing his brilliant comedy for us to listen to on our LONG drives. Nerissa has never heard him so I anticipate delighting her. I also tried to buy Queen's greatest hits but so far I've failed. I wanted to replace my vinyl version with a CD, but it seems that Queen has released about 5 greatest hits packages and none is the one I remember so fondly from my youth. Argh. Nerissa says she's bringing "Wingspan" to make up for the Queen no-show." On our way home, we will stop in Rochester, NY at the University for a show. If it is anything like last time, it should be so so fun. Come. It's free. Then we head to Ithaca. Finally. We love love love that town, but it never seems to work out that we can play there. We jumped at the chance to play when the folk society invited us. Come. I don't think it's free, but it'll be fun. Maybe we can all go out to eat at the Moosewood. :-) Nerissa is headed to LA, CA for a show with Pam Houston the day before Valentine's. If Nerissa is really lucky she might get to visit the set of the West Wing. Meanwhile I'll stay home teaching Amelia to eat avocado. The third week in February has worked out to be a tour of Amelia's grandparents. First we go to NYC where she will see one set. Nerissa and I will play Makor with Gideon Freudman who plays cello like Bela Fleck plays banjo- not exactly the same but similar in its brilliance. We get to return to the University of Hartford. We promise to bring extra strings this time. On Saturday we head to the western side of the Chesapeake Bay to play with Cheryl Wheeler. Oh I can't wait!!! I love Cheryl and Amelia gets to see her other set of Grandparents that night. Finally we head to Philadelphia for a show at the esteemed folk venue- The Cherry Tree. It has been years since we played there and we are so pleased to be returning. We are looking forward to seeing you all out there on the road. Hope your favorite team wins the Superbowl! Theoretically. After ten years of making CDs, I've come to lower my expectations (expectations are premeditated resentments). In the past, we've been told by countless fans, "I looked everywhere for your CD and couldn't find it." The store clerk said, "the Eels? Ah, yes right over here." Or "No, we don't have that but we can certainly order it for you." Argh. No instant gratification there. And this time around, we have some stores that insisted on filing Love and China under "Nerissa" instead of "Nields." Annoying. Still none of this really matters. What matters is that after six months of a steady diet of these songs, these arrangements and these versions, we still really like to listen to it. And we have to listen to it a lot because it's Amelia's pacifier music. Could be worse. Could be Def Leopard. Other uses for this record: excellent and energizing for when you're tidying your room; impressive yet subtle background music for a dinner party; fits in nicely with many different CD's if you put it in your CD changer with anything from the Beatles to Beethoven to Mary Chapin Carpenter to Vanilla Fudge. (I made up the name of that last band. Is there such an entity?) Also: good for listening to if you are in love, and equally good for stretching out prone on the rug when your heart's been trod upon. And the songs are really pretty easy to play if you want to strum along. We're making a songbook which I hope will be ready to sell by the end of the month. But you probably don't need it. Most of these songs are straightforward first position three or four chord songs. Simple, like a log cabin, but they'll take good care of you and not get blown away. We'll be touring a lot to promote the CD. Please come to our shows. I don't know about you, but I've been enjoying our shows recently. Katryna cracks me up. We're coming to the Midwest in the end of March because word is that's where it's AT, man. Big CD release parties closer to home at The Iron Horse in Northampton (4/13), The Fez in NYC (4/17 & 19) Boston area (Emerson Umbrella in Concord, 4/26), Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC (5/2), the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA (5/3) and The Sedgewick in Philly (5/11). Dates are being added constantly, so check out our web site for updates (www.nields.com). Just have to say, I love the new Ben Folds CD. Also, spring is coming! Blessings, folks.
