We send word from the Fabulous Westward Ho! Entertainment Complex in Grand Forks, North Dakota where we are playing tonight; our opening act is a comedian named Mitch Hedberg who's so funny that four out of six Nields fell over laughing. (The other two were outside enjoying the Aurora Borealis). We've been enjoying the good hospitality of Grand Forks for going on three days, during which we've: eaten dinner at Ponderosa, gone to the movies (Rounders), gone bowling, sang Karaoke and played Black Jack at the casino (David won 50 cents). A nice respite from our usual obligatory trips to the mall (OKOK, we DID go to the Grand Forks Mall too, but only to get our pictures taken in that little photo booth.) Cool fact about North Dakota: scientists have discovered that if you create giant windmills, ten stories tall, and set them up on the North Dakota prairie, you will harness enough energy from the wind to power the ENTIRE WORLD!!!!!! Today Patty sent us 3 copies of Play and we are FREAKING OUT!!!! As you all know, the release date is this Tuesday, September 29, but word from Mercury Canada is that it's already in stores up there--WAHOO!!! We're off to Winnipeg tomorrow to see if those rumors are true. Also to play a show at the West End Cultural Center. Then, on to Sioux Falls, SD and off to join our dear friends Moxy Fruvous for the remainder of our tour (Denver, Carbondale and Boulder CO; Minneapolis, Madison and Chicago). Our friends Laurie and Jenna have made the most amazing chess set: one side has chess pieces that are Nields action figures and the other side has the Fruvous boys. This chess set will be raffled off among the fans who come to the most shows on our mutual tour. Details to follow. Life on the road is good now that we have Nessie (new van) who has yet to break down. Joining Nessie is the newest addition to our entourage: Jason Raboin, sound engineer and bowler extraordinaire. Jason will be played by Chris O'Donnell in *The Nields: The Early Years.* Also joining us is our BRAND NEW TRAILER named Kitty Box. So, in short, spirits are high, Life is good and we're not sick of Wendy's yet. We are all screaming, "Back in New England!!! WAHOOOOOO!!!!" Except for Dave Hower who is currently screaming something else. (Dave Hower was trying to lull David Nields asleep, taking it as his personal crusade to prove that it IS possible for Mr. Nields to fall asleep in a moving vehicle. None of the others of us have any trouble with van insomnia. "Pretend that you're outside playing soccer on a really beautiful day," he was cooing.) Katryna and I are knitting away on our sweaters; she's on sleeve #1 and I'm on sleeve #2, but I've got bigger needles. We are a little sad having just said goodbye to our fun phat friends of Moxy Fruvous. We had the best show in Chicago where we raffled off the famous Beaner Chess Set. It went to a super youth, Ronald from Joliette, IL who happens to be the coach of a high school chess team and was able to improvise a little song that went out over cyberspace on Rolling Stone's Web page (They were "filming"-or whatever the cyber equivalent is-the Moxy Fruvous portion of the show). Ronald Rocks!!!!! We are psyched having broken all previous soundscan records in the first week of Play's release: 544! In our top selling market of Springfield, MA (that counts Northampton and Amherst) we ranked #32 on the charts! Other top markets are Boston, Philly, Hartford and NYC. DC's numbers were sadly puny: 13. Which proves that mine and Katryna's former hometown fans who used to watch us busking at the Circle K weren't all that impressed. Surprise markets are Orlando, FL and Houston TX. Whatever. We're sending the Single to radio this week and go for "adds" next Tuesday, Oct. 20. What can you do to help in this crucial phase of our campaign? CALL!!!! Call up your local triple A radio station and request Easy People. Or better yet, if you hear any Nields song ever on the radio, please call up and say, "thanks for playing the Nields!" Or even more helpful: "who was that sweet sounding band??? Play that song again!" Hope to see you at the upcoming CD release shows: Bottom Line, NYC 10/22; Northern Lights, near Albany, NY 10/23; Iron Horse, Northampton, MA 10/24-25; JCC, harrisburg, PA 10/29; Toad's Place, New Haven, CT 11/5; Rosebud, Pittsburgh, PA 11/11; Trax, Charlottesville, VA 11/12; Bayou, Washington, DC 11/13; Cat's Cradle, Carrboro, NC 11/14; 40 Watt, Athens, GA 11/17; 5 Points Music Hall, Birmingham, AL 11/18; Bird's Eye View, Knoxville, TN 11/19; Handlebar, Greenville, SC 11/20 and Ziggy's, Winston-Salem, NC 11/21. Hey everyone - This is from the record company. Take Care - Courtney ********** Date: Wed, 9 Dec 1998 17:22:27 -0500 () From: Ellen Taintor Subject: WBOS (fwd) This is great - we've been after WBOS to start testing "Easy People" and is sounds as though they are! PLEASE, Boston-area Nields fans, if you hear the song on this station, call! Call to say you liked what they just played. Call the next day to say you heard this "Easy People" song and really liked it and could they play it again! If WBOS will add the record, this could be a big help in taking it to other stations around the country. (be subtle about it though - they'll pay a lot less heed to the calls if they know it's an orchestrated move by a few area fans, and not innocent reactions by the BOS listeners!) Thanks! From the band....take care and stay warm everyone - Courtney ********* Dear e-pals, Greetings from Pittsburgh, PA! We are snuggled up at Dave C's grandmother's house, keeping out of the freezing rain and learning new songs. It's swell. Yesterday was Dave's birthday; he got: new watch, new Cake CD, Al Franken's new book, a Scaremouse, which may make an appearance at a forthcoming Nields show, Charming Billy, a shirt and Nasty Orange Circus Peanut Candies. Also TWO birthday cakes. OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are so excited that WRNX added our record. That's a big commercial station in Springfield, MA. If you all hear "Snowman" on 100.9, PLEASE call in and make a positive comment, like "I LOVED THAT PLEASE PLAY THAT A MILLION MORE TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" See, if 100.9 keeps playing our record, we can tell WBOS about that, and then they'll be peer pressured into playing our record. If WBOS adds it, then KBCO in Boulder may have to. And if KBCO adds the record, well, then the Mountain in Seattle will just have to cave in and play it as well. Get the idea? So your calls would be extremely helpful. Hope you are all well and warm and ignoring the TV to the best of your ability. We miss you and can't wait to see you at the next show! We are in Champaign, IL resting our dogs (and playing with the GREATEST dogs, Tina and Shasta, a yellow lab and Golden retriever, respectively) and gearing up for week 3 of our tremendous Ground Hog Tour which is getting more fun by the minute. We adored last weeks shows (well, Top Cats in Cincinnati left a little to be desired, although the 32 people there did everything they could to make us feel welcome and we will surely return for their dear sakes) and saw sell-outs (not us, but the shows) in Madison and Cedar Rapids. Indianapolis rocked too. We'll come back there anytime, Dan Quayle or no Dan Quayle. Having fun reading Why Not Me? by Al Franken. Come to our Louisville show this Thursday. Or if it's kind of inconvenient for you to do so (say, if you live in Delaware or somewhere far-away like that) could you send your pals? Also, we'll be at Schuba's in Chicago on Friday--it's one of our all- time favorite rooms, very intimate and the sound is great, sort of a midwestern Iron Horse. And let's not forget Oberlin College, which we've been jonesing to play since time immemorial, on Saturday night. Miss you all! Even the ones of you we just met Sunday in Cedar Rapids!!
