I don't think I've ever heard anything so over-produced. ===== The morning after we found her second lump, Marla hopped into the kitchen with both legs in one leg of her pantyhose and said, "Look, I'm a mermaid." Marla said "This isn't like when guys sit backwards on a toilet and pretend it's a motorcycle. This is a genuine accident." Just before Marla and I met at Remaining Men Together, there was the first lump, and now there was a second lump. What you have to know is that Marla is still alive. Marla's philosophy of life, she told me, is that she can die at any moment. The tragedy of her life is that she doesn't. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! I >don't think I've ever heard anything so over-produced. I'd have to largely agree. Seems like it's a case of 'too many cooks', seeing as there are *three* producers on this one (including Sarah). I was *so* looking forward to the results of the collaboration, seeing as the producers, Dan Kurtz (bassist for Toronto live breakbeat-house trio the New Deal, husband to Martina Sorbara and all-around nice guy) and Pete Prilesnik produced two of my favourite records of all time, Feist's "Monarch" and Sarah Harmer's "You Were Here" respectively. Both those albums are models of restraint - tiny perfect SIMPLE records that treat each song like jewels in a larger setting. Not sure what happened here - I *know* the songs are there, as the solo live versions of all these songs that she's been doing are just brilliant, if rather high-concept (baroque cabaret, if you will), but it seems to me that they buried the songs in shiny production because they feared that no one would 'get it'. "Lucky Me", for example, smacks of desperation to garner a radio hit. Definitely not what I expected. - - T. _________________________________________________________________ Powerful Parental Controls Let your child discover the best the Internet has to offer. http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-ca&page=byoa/prem&xAPID=1994&DI=1034&SU=http://hotmail.com/enca&HL=Market_MSNIS_Taglines Start enjoying all the benefits of MSN. She seems to be getting too artsy with her lyrics. "California" makes much more of an impact because it's so direct." In her CA concerts, she mentioned "Day One" as an anthem for her revolution of joy. She goes into her revolution (of art, creation, and big parties in parks) with the song, "Out in the Park." Instead of dreaming about the future (by thinking "one day...."), she reverses it to create the title track of her album. The revolution begins today. "Lucky Me" is about the battle of the titans: religion vs. science. In da Vinci's time, they were one in the same thing but they have separated and become mortal enemies. The song is about their continuing battle for the human race. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2004 10:21:49 -0400 From: fingerpuppets Subject: Re: Day One release date one time at band camp, Look I'm A Mermaid (lookima_mermaid@yahoo.com) said: >Am I the only one who is SERIOUSLY disappointed with >everything I've heard so far off of this album? I wish I'd been able to tell. Actually in all fairness, I've only heard that one a couple of times straight off the website, so I'm going to be listening to that one a lot more & maybe I'll get it then. :) > >"Lucky Me" is about the battle of the titans: religion vs. science. Night Bugs, i find is full of embellishments ... the new album seems fun, theatrical, slick, and even campy, in a Slean kind of fashion. Personally i think whether you like the new album depends on what side of Slean's music you are more drawn towards.
