Unfortunately we ended up missing a big chunk of Sarah's set, thanks in part to some overbearing security rigamarole at the gate. We had to walk all the way around the venue to find an entrance that wasn't blocked off, and when we finally got there we were greeted by bouncers who looked and acted more like they were doormen at a hip-hop club than staff at a Canadian music celebration. While I'm generally pretty tolerant of tight security these days, this was nothing short of poor judgement and power-tripping on the part of the event staff. Anyway, the songs we heard from outside the gate, while the security thugs stripped us of our refreshments and hassled us at length about our cameras, sounded tight. We finally made it in for the last two songs but by that time any hope of spending an enjoyable day at the park had vaporized. To add insult to injury, we discovered a food concession selling overpriced refreshments (after we were denied permission to bring in our own on an 85-degree day), and we were greeted by Summerstage staff inside the gates soliciting donations for this experience. We soon met some friends near the stage and stuck around for The Dears. We unanimously agreed that Sarah should have been billed above that band, not placed before them. While one of my friends considered them tolerable, I thought they were virtually devoid of talent. Next, Pamela Wallin strolled onstage to introduce Daniel Lanois, and while recapping the lineup of "great musicians with a lot of talent" performing for Canada Day, she omitted The Dears' name. We got a good laugh out of that, and couldn't help but wonder if the omission wasn't intentional. Daniel's set sounded tight but the damage had been done - we'd had enough and headed out mid-set, before Rufus Wainright performed. It takes a lot for me to say I didn't enjoy myself at a Slean show. Maybe it's because we had just spent a week in the laid-back, friendly atmosphere of northern California, only to arrive home to the typically abrasive, stressed-out New York attitude. Whatever the case, it makes me appreciate the longer shows I've seen from her in good venues, that much more. By the way, here's the set list, which was posted over on Ecto: "Eliot" "Duncan" "Bank Accounts" "Book Smart, Street Stupid" "California" "The Score" "Sweet Ones" Dan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2003 23:18:24 -0700 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: Fwd: sslean/sstage [posted to ecto. i did not write this, Donald did.] Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2003 17:59:06 -0400 (EDT) From: "Donald G. Keller" Subject: sslean/sstage Since I didn't see any other area ectofolk at the Canada Day show at Central Park's Summerstage, I'll take the initiative to report on Sarah Slean's set, which was all I stayed for. I had forgotten that you can't get into Summerstage from the West Side, and took the swiftest uptown train, the 2-3 express, to 72nd Street. Of course, I had to walk all the way across to the other side of the stage to get in. But unlike last year(? the year before?) when there had been a line to get into see Cowboy Junkies (and some of us ended up sitting on the hill outside), I was able to waltz right in and find a spot front and center, only a row of people from the barrier. Right about on time (3 p.m.), Sarah Slean (barefoot, wearing a red sun-dress) took the stage with her three-piece band, and played a short but strong set reminiscent of her May show at the Knitting Factory. The setlist: "Eliot" "Duncan" "Bank Accounts" "Book Smart, Street Stupid" "California" "The Score" "Sweet Ones" "Eliot" begins with a long (and it must be said) rather bombastic instrumental introduction, and at first the band was so loud that the keyboard was hardly audible. But Sarah and the soundman both turned up the piano volume, and after that the band tended to underplay a little more, so it was only a temporary problem. "Elliot" also seems to be the only song where she uses her affected cabaret vocal. "Duncan" and "Book Smart, Street Stupid" are both songs familiar to me from previous shows, and though not favorites, they're very nice songs very nicely done on this occasion as usual. "Bank Accounts" is a =Night Bugs= song with which I'm less familiar; it's bright and energetic. I can't remember if this was the song with the interlude for piano, high bass notes, and glockenspiel, but wherever it occurred it was a fine moment. "California" I only heard for the first time at the Knitting Factory; it's the one where she does the lead singer thing and lets the band carry the music. A really lovely ballad I look forward to hearing again. It would have been the high point of the set, except that she followed it directly with "The Score" (her "nasty song," as she describes it). This also I heard for the first time at the Knitting Factory, and remembered it much more vividly; both times it knocked me sideways. It's a killer song with Kurt Weill-style jagged accents and edgy harmonies, very unlike her usual (though very like Boston band the Dresden Dolls, about whom more shortly), but among her strongest compositions. (For my taste, anyway.) And she concluded the too-short set with a sprightly "Sweet Ones." No encore, more show to go, but not for me. I went east this time (it's a longer walk than I remembered over to the 6 train). A very good set, worth the trip, but it as much whetted my appetite (for another show, may it happen soon) as satisfied it. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 06:03:44 EDT From: Etiennegoddess@aol.com Subject: RE: Summerfest@Central Park Hiya Everyone* It's my first time ever using this as well as my first time ever seeing Sarah live. I am at a loss for words. I've only been listening to Sarah for 2 years now, but yesterday's performance absolutely blew me away. I've been to a lot of different shows for other artists, and this might have been my 2nd fave peformance. * I know it was a short set, and I just cannot wait to see her again* :) I am going to try my hardest to spread the word around that Slean, is a must see show. I was in the front row standing up. So sorry if I blocked anyone's view* I could'nt help but shake that bootay of mine for a few songs..Score and California were both new to me, but I felt connected to each for their different essences. We passed a long a few smiles during the show. Sarah's energy is wicked cute.Very etheral yet very playful. She was very sweet for the brief moment we chatted.:) Well, Take good care all of you* Blessed Be *~Nikki~* Ps... I totally looked back and saw that guy belly dancing..lol But at least he was enjoying himself. To each's own I guess*smiles* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 10:11:45 -0400 From: "Nicole Killian" Subject: RE: Summerfest@Central Park Yesterday's show I thought went pretty well, though I feel the lineup schedule should have been a bit different.Too bad Sarah didn't go on before Rufus. I thought her show went well......it was nice seeing her in an outdoor warm setting, I rarely get to see her that way.....the dozen other times have been in dark clubs so that was definitely a treat. I was up towards the front before the show and it was nice, getting people hyped up to see her since most of the people around me had never even heard of her. After the show they seemed to dig her stuff. I was happy to see that Sarah's former drummer (I am at a loss for his name right now...but I think that was the guy who left to go to teacher's college Sarah told me once) was back with the nightbugs.... Personally as for the other bands that day....I really liked what the Deers did....too bad their stuff was stuck at customs and i could't pick up a CD. The third guy I widh would have just ended right after his first song but oh well.....and Rufus, what more can I say. I had been waiting like 6 years to see him, so it was definitely nice to be up front and finally listening to his voice live. - --nicole _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 12:37:55 -0400 From: "Scott Pollack" Subject: The Score or California or Day One Hi, when I saw sarah last month she played California, Day One, and The Score. Since then my friends and I have been desperatly trying to hunt down The Score and Day One mp3's. However, I have found numerous versions of California, and I have a reallyyyyyy nice mp3 of Sarah and the piano and a trumpet on California, and its great quality. If anyone wants it id be happy to share. But I can only do that through aol instant messanger since hotmail is insanely bad. So if you have Day one or the score, please get back to me. even if its not called the score, since sometimes mp3s are mislabeled. thanks scott - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. That would be "The Dears" (www.thedears.org). Although I must admit that since they are a Montreal-based outfit, your spelling works better :-) - - Julian - -- [ Julian C.
