There's been some talk on the Headline Girl list about Toronto indie rock band Broken Social Scene - I was really surprised but totally thrilled to see them figure in some people's year-end top ten lists... Most of you will have no idea who they are, but it's the best-reviewed Canadian album of the year, and you'll all be hearing a lot more about them very soon, I predict. Anyway, they're one of my favourite bands right now, and while they sound absolutely nothing like Emm or Sarah, there's long been evidence of musical adventurism on both these lists, so I urge folks who like sprawling indie rock to check them out. Well, what do they actually *sound* like, you ask? Uh, well, theres no adequate description of that, exactly, as the 'band' itself is an amorphous collective of some of the best Toronto indie-rock players that constantly changes (its core members are Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, ex of By Divine Right), and not a single song on their new album, "You Forgot It In People", sounds the same. I call them a 'rock orchestra', which is slightly silly but apt. ;-) Anyway, the point of this post is that they're on the cover of eye Weekly and the Toronto Star's What's On section today, so you can read all about 'em there or online: http://www.eye.net http://www.thestar.ca And the reason for the splashy coverage is their CD release show *tonight* at Lula Lounge (way out on Dundas West, but don't let that scare you ;)) - it's gonna be packed, but if you're interested in the Toronto scene and don't mind checking out something that's a little out of the ordinary, I highly recommend dropping in on the show. I don't know what the regulations are in Japan, but in Canada, if you want to cover a song, you can get a licence from the Canadian Musical Rights Reproduction Agency (CMRRA). They licence music for both recordings (what you want to do -- "mechanicals") and for movies and tv ("synchronization"). Note that CMRRA does *not* cover live performance licences -- the bar owner is already paying SOCAN (or ASCAP or BMI in the US or SESAC in Europe or JASRAC in Japan). Assuming you're in Canada, and the song you wanted is licenced from the CMRRA, and you're only making a small quantity of CDs, you can pay a flat rate of 7.7 cents/song.
