But it wasn't a record company or producer that had taken over -- it was the night bugs, the "truth-tellers." These creatures had such a profound effect on the 24-year-old that she named her record after them. "The first night we were in Bearsville I came out of the studio in the middle of the night, because we worked pretty much 12-hour days, and the sound of the little insects and the little forest creatures and the tree frogs and stuff was super loud . . . It was really present, and for the first three nights I couldn't sleep because it was so loud. I almost felt like the whole area was going 'Hey, we're in charge. You're just a visitor so you make your music and you stay humble.' And I thought that was a little bit of magical intervention," Slean recalls. "Plus, it was just bloody beautiful, walking down that little road with the moon out and the stars and twinkling bugs. It was jaw-dropping." Slean, a Toronto native, took these walks with co-producer Hawksley Workman, an acclaimed Canadian singer/songwriter known for his eccentricity and diverse musical abilities. "Part of the reason I chose him as a co-producer is because he doesn't have an ego about sharing the duty and he doesn't have an ego about making music with somebody," Slean says. "He's just a creative force and he welcomes other creative forces into the fold." The relationship has been beneficial for Workman as well. Slean sung back-up vocals on his 2001 release (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves and has performed with him in concert. Night Bugs is Slean's third album and her Warner Music Canada debut. She had previously released the independent discs Universe in 1997 and Blue Parade in 1999. The deal with Warner provides her with major-label backing, while allowing her the benefits of being an independent artist. "I wouldn't sign a deal if I couldn't have that," Slean says. "It's kind of like, are you going to sell your soul or not?" On Night Bugs Slean has reworked three songs from her previous records. ("Eliot," for example, now possesses a larger, more lush sound.) This is something she always wanted to do, but couldn't afford to with the original recording. The label has also allowed for mass distribution of the first single, "Sweet Ones," and support that includes radio play, a video, and an upcoming spot on Women & Songs 6. (Her work was also featured on two earlier editions of Women & Songs.) But commercial success is not particularly important to Slean. "It's great what it can do for you as far as introducing people to your record and your body of work and I had fun doing the video," she says. "I'm a painter, so I really like things that are done well visually, and (a video) is just another art form that you get to dabble in. They allow me to contribute to the story and the look of the video and the design of the clothes I wear and all sorts of stuff like that, so it's just more art nerdiness." Slean's music has also been featured on television shows such as Dawson's Creek and Felicity, and the movie Joyride, whose audiences are typically more into the disposable-pop scene than they are to contemplative melodies like Slean's. But according to Slean, who studied classical piano at York University in Toronto for a year before leaving to pursue her own tastes, it's all about something she calls: seeking to educate. "A lot of these people in the business side of music, they get my work into avenues that I would never think that I would be welcome in, so I'm stunned and pleased at the same time, because it brings my work and what I say to people that would never normally hear it, so I guess that feels good." Slean can also be heard on the upcoming compilation song "The Streets Where You Live," a tribute to women who suffer abuse from drug addiction and life on the streets. She wanted to lend her voice as a way to respond to these tragedies in general, and to all the women, in particular, who have gone missing in Vancouver. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Dec 2002 23:19:20 -0700 From: "Katie Belsher" Subject: i dont get it. there are so many things on the sarah slean web page that dont work. i've been trying to get on the message board for like an hour. and you cant contact the web admin either, so its frusterating... just needed to vent, and see if theres anyone who knows how we can contact someone about it... maybe its just my computer though... but i dont think so. complaining in calgary, katie _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. This is even common among small "independent" papers (at least in Ontario in the penumbra of T-dot) that are owned by a single entity, c.f. Echo Magazine (Guelph/Cambridge) and the View (?) (Hamilton). James. ------------------------------ End of navy-soup-digest V5 #185 *******************************
