(muhuhuhuhahahaha!) the song is played with a volume pedal and a digital delay, set (via tap tempo) for a dotted quarter note, to create the -- to paraphrase andrew -- "u2-style triplet rhythm feel" andrew tends not to play the low root of the chords, since the bass is covering it, and, i would assume, because it creates a more free-floating feel to the guitar part. if you are playing it by yourself, though, you may want to add the root at the bottom of the chord. each chord in the verse is faded in with the volume pedal and sustained by the delay: Fm Eb Dbmaj7 Cm ||---------------------------------(6)----|| ||----9----8----8----6----6----4----4-----|| ||----10---10---8----8----5----5----3-----|| ||----10---10---8----8----6----6----------|| ||----8----8------------------------3-----|| ||----------------------------------------|| the (6) in the Cm chord is only played occasionally. he didn't tab out the chorus for me, just wrote out the chords instead: Dbmaj7 - Ab - Bbm - Fm Db - Ab - Eb ...and told me that these chords were based upon the voicings above. the Db is the only one he specifically showed me, but based upon what he told me, i assume it is played like this: Dbmaj7 Ab Bbm Fm Db Ab Eb ||-------------------------|-------------------------|| ||----6--------------9-----|----6---------8----------|| ||----5----5----6----10----|----6----5----8----------|| ||----6----6----8----10----|----6----6----8----------|| ||---------6----8----8-----|---------6---------------|| ||-------------------------|-------------------------|| sometimes the chorus doesn't go straight back into the verse, and instead lingers on "still i wish i was..." for this, the chords are: |: Db - Cm :| so, presumably, that would look like this: Db Cm ||---------(6)----|| ||-----6----4-----|| ||o----6----3----o|| ||o----6---------o|| ||----------3-----|| ||----------------|| i hope this makes you even a fraction as happy as it has made me. :) - --alex ("the dancing guy in the radiohead shirt") _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Tonight's show was *amazing.* Literally amazing. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire show. FRONT ROW, right in front of the piano, (well, the keyboard which is covered to _look_ like a piano, hehe.) Besides a weird buzzing that was coming off the left monitor, the sound was fantastic - the venue, The Exchange, is an abandoned warehouse with amazing wood structure and great acoustics. I'm not a sound pro but the music resonated extremely well. Regina's set: Eliot Bank Accounts Duncan Day One Book Smart Street Stupid - -band leaves- My Invitation (with trumpet) Blue Parade (solo) Vertigo (with violin and acoustic) - -band returns- California The Score Sweet Ones Drastic Measures Encore 1: Me & Jerome Weight Edelweiss (solo) Encore 2: Last Year's War (solo) Okay, so not to sound too gushing, there was a real lack of audience in the show but that grew by around California. Supposedly it's the only show on the tour that didn't sell out... which was obvious as the place felt far from packed. Before Duncan, Sarah chatted that the next song would be about love, and asked if Regina people fell in love ever. Day One: for those of you who haven't heard it... you will not *believe* the tune. It's like Bank Accounts, stepped up a notch, throw in some funk, gorgeous strong chorus with a drawn out "one" that makes me shudder to think of how much talent went into the songwriting. Sarah said the song was written as a 70's sitcom theme song... it has that feel. She cautioned that although we might want to get down and boogie... we shouldn't. (trust me I didn't although I was tempted.) I needed to hear Blue Parade tonight, and I heard it. That, following the most emotional performance of My Invitation my ears have had the privilege of hearing... equaled a great solo set. Vertigo was interesting, as the only recording I've heard of it was accapella. California rocked as usual. I assume it'll be on the next album. The Score has been my least favourite of the new-ish tracks, but it's growing on me. I liked it better tonight than anything I've heard of it before. Edelweiss started off with little participation, but I did my best at learning the words in the last six months and tried to sing along... it was like a very hushed chorus of voices at best, but it did sound delicate and sweet. Last Year's War: well, I was sitting in the front. Sarah asked for a request seeing as we beckoned her back onto stage for a second encore... so I yelled it out. Then a woman in the back repeated my request. I felt guilty for yelling, but... Sarah commented how frightening it was that we knew the song existed, considering it hasn't been recorded. (? I had thought it was recorded for the Night Bugs sessions???) It was beautiful, wonderful, great. My friend who doesn't know any of the songs besides Sweet Ones said it was her favourite of the set. Mine was obviously Day One, but Last Year's War was top notch.... especially as Sarah said she might have forgotten the words as she hadn't played it in a while. After, I met Sarah for the second time and now my CD collection has been fully signed. She said "Day One" will be on the next album, and GET THIS. She said she's trying to get Jon Brion to produce it! AND ... it's NEXT YEAR... oh my goodness I think I might have rambled a bit at this point to her about how great Jon is, but... wow. If "Day One" doesn't have single written all over it, I don't know what else to think. I need a recording of this song!! Although Sarah commented on how Saskatoon is a more lively crowd, I believe this show rocked July's in Saskatoon by far. It was a tighter set with a more complete band (bass, acoustic/electric, violin, trumpet, drums & piano) and... a more energetic Sarah. A more "dirty" Sarah (in a van for 10 hours from Banff.) I've never had the opportunity to sit front row for a show before... this blew my mind. I hope she doesn't forget Regina in the future even though the crowd wasn't that strong. thanks for reading! happy, kyall ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Dec 2002 09:22:55 +0200 From: Yaron Subject: RE: Regina December 3 2002 Kyall, thanks so much for the great concert review and set list! My first concert was seeing Toad the Wet Sprocket with opening act The Grays. Years and years later, as I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of "When the pawn..." I learned of Jon Brion and read up on him. Turns out he was a member of The Grays. He's also had his hands in albums by Grant Lee Buffalo and The Eels -- BOTH of which I own. Not to mention he produced the Magnolia soundtrack (one of my favorite movies and soundtracks). He's in everything I like and if this colaboration happens.... well, I will be in heaven. Btw -- when she came to Philly a few months ago I did talk to her and she mentioned that Hawksley probably wouldn't be producing the next one. I guess I probably should have posted that to the list when it happened.
