It's so great to do this for the first time, I'm glad it went well for you eventually. Thanks :) Yaron. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-navy-soup@smoe.org [mailto:owner-navy-soup@smoe.org] On Behalf Of kyall glennie Sent: Friday, July 19, 2002 19:12 To: navy-soup@smoe.org Subject: Sarah in Saskatoon: July 18 2002 Hi everyone, Set-list first, synopsis second. SET: 1) Opener... (I titled it "Fire with love" but the setlist said "Opener") into Eliot 2) Bank Accounts 3) Duncan 4) St Francis 5) California (no piano) 6) Woodstock (Joni Mitchell cover, solo) 7) Drastic Measures (lead in by a comment on how everyone in Toronto MUST... MAKE... MONEY... hilarious!) 8) The Score 9) Book Smart, Street Stupid (long intro about the alternate person "Emily" who lived in Paris in the 1890's and drank too much) 10) The Difference Is Why (Lenny Kravitz cover, no piano) 11) Sweet Ones (best crowd reaction / recognition, by far) 12) Weight Encore 1: 13) Edelweiss (a sing-a-long with moderate participation, solo) 14) Playing Cards with Judas (improv mid-way about the wheat of Saskatchewan and all the things you can make with it... muffins, whole wheat...) Encore 2: 15) Me, I'm a Thief (solo) The original set list had slated two solos in the middle of the show, but Sarah seemed to forget as she called back the band ("Where are my night bugs?") when they were obviously waiting for her to perform a second song after "Woodstock"! Okay, I'm going to give you all a story. It's called perseverance, or something, because yesterday was a day I'll never forget for a number of reasons. I'll try to make it as short as possible. I live two hours from Saskatoon. I've driven in that city a count of three times. Luckily, I know it quite well. I got to the city around 3:30, and went to a music store in a mall, where I saw a poster for the show. It said Advance tickets - 10$, at the door - 13$. The woman at the counter said they were sold out, and that I should hurry, as the venue, Crawdaddy's, only had 24 to sell. (this woman will come back in the story.) I ran to a payphone and called, and sure enough, the show was sold out. Good for me for underestimating Sarah's popularity, thanks to an independent radio station that has done well at promoting her (how could I know, I don't listen to any radio!) The venue told me there is a 99% possibility that they would be selling tickets at the door, so I should return at 7:15 to get in for the 9:30 show. Did just that, and I was told that there were 35 as-they-come tickets but they wouldn't be sold until 9:30. Desperate to accomplish SOMETHING that day, seeing as my hopes to get in were growing weaker by the minute as I stood there without ticket in hand, I went to a terrible movie, "The Crocodile Hunter." It didn't really decrease any anxiety I had, especially after the giant bird-eating spider crawls up on the woman... but anyway... Went back to the venue. (it's around 8:45) New guy at door, I hoped to be able to somehow get an early-bird ticket. Nope, but he reassured me that I should be able to get in. At 9:20, after seeing all of downtown Saskatoon three times over on foot, I went back and was number 10 in the lineup. Got in. Forced to stand at the back next to the bar, where I was able to overhear most of the conversations going on the entire show... oh well, I got to see Sarah perform. Her opening act was a local Saskatoon man, and although he had a very good voice and reasonable guitar skills, his material did nothing for me (or the crowd, really.) The highlights of the show, as Sarah stuck to mainly as-close-as-possible-to-the-studio-record (or maybe that means the studio record is as close-as-possible-to-the-live-performance?) were the solos and the covers. "Woodstock" (I found out the title from the girl from the record store, who was at the show front-seats) was beautiful, and Sarah commented prior to playing it that "when in Rome, I do as the Romans" to pay tribute to Saskatoon's own Joni Mitchell. My Joni collection only contains _Blue_ and _Both Sides Now_ so that was why I wasn't aware of the song, but it was definitely Joni and I must say that it was excellent. "The Difference is Why," which was previewed with a story how the trendy folks of Toronto make fun of Sarah's love for Lenny Kravitz, had one note that I've never heard Sarah sing or sustain for so long... beautiful. And finally, "Me, I'm a Thief" solo: worth the whole ordeal in that moment alone. The room, which I wouldn't say was a terrible crowd but nonetheless wasn't great either, at least gave her a brief silence to perform that as a beautiful closer. I wish I would have recorded the show to have that as a keepsake, but I didn't. I'm glad that she was egged back by the crowd for a final encore, that was surprising! "California" was excellent, but I wasn't fond of "The Score" whatsoever. I imagine Sarah likes to spice up her show with whatever new material she has (after all, she's been performing regularly for something like four years now correct?) BUT I wish she would have played something more familiar instead of this song. She only played one pre-Night Bugs tune, "Playing Cards with Judas," and I would have liked to hear some of the stronger material from the indie releases. Luckily I was able to meet her after the show. Second in line after a fanatic girl who went kind of ditzy and screaming and hugging and mushy and all that. I told her a terribly silly story about how I had been in Toronto and ate chocolate at her parent's shop, after meeting her mom. She laughed quite hard on that one. She wrote in my Blue Parade album "mmm chocolate, be kind to my mom" in reference. :) There was about 20 people waiting, and Sarah seemed a little fatigued - possibly because it was 12:00 or so, and she had to be in Calgary the next evening, or possibly because groupies like the first girl are a little too much for her. I tried not to be too much of a groupie. :) So: I am one among equals now, I have seen Sarah perform, I have met her, and I have driven home very very very satisfied. And her merchandise is fairly priced, too! kyall - -- [ Julian C.
