Is Sarah > marketing to a new demographic? No. She's always been like this, though for her, these "characters" are a somewhat new way to express what she's always felt/seen... Sarah is a very visual person, many of her songs are dream- (or day dream) inspired, she sees these people n her head. In older songs (circa '95-97) like "Elaine", she's said that she saw her 'characters' as a painting, or like in "Sadie" as an imagined happenstance. She's merely chosen a more common metaphor to express the images from which the songs are derived and to help us understand them as she does. E.g. I would guess that "Duncan" or "Eliot" might have appeared scratchy black and white movies or that "Sweet Ones" was in full, bright colours. Its only recently that she's been taking on the 'characterizations' herself visa vis these "alter egos". You know, I'm just thinking a loud, I do notice that a lot of my friends who are fellow fans of Slean have very visual natures; tend to understand things as pictures... hmmmm... just a random thought. Anyway, I don't think Sarah actively markets to any demographic. In artistic terms I'd say she's very selfish (and I don't mean that in a negative manner), she writes primarily for herself; because she _has_ to. That'll be a great pairing. Stephen's a great musician in his own right -- I had the pleasure of seeing him perform a too-short set at NXNE this year - -- and he's very witty to boot. Highly recommended. - - Julian - -- [ Julian C.
