I can see how people might find her "too country" but I think her CD "Bramble Rose" is great. I'd highly recommend that anyone who is enamored with Patty Griffin, Maria McKee or Emmylou Harris to check her out. I'm not a Gillian Welch fan, but I think that fans of hers would be quite drawn to Tift as well. t.t. www.overhear.com/ttaitt >Julian said: Tab and I were there for Luke Doucet's set, and it was great! IMHO the next act, Tift Merritt, was a miss, though... a little too country for my tastes. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Jun 2002 02:17:09 -0700 From: "Allison Crowe Band Management" Subject: OAC: Allison Crowe's 'Crying in a Rainstorm' Tour hello - I'm Adrian, friend and manager to Allison Crowe - an artist who'll be on tour in Canada from late June through mid-July. A really wonderful person, and a musician who will be part of Allison's show in Toronto (July 6 at the Rivoli), Tanisha Taitt, suggested to me that fans here may be open to Alley's music. So, I hope you don't mind... (I'm introducing Alley to fans of several artists that would seem kindred.) Below is the announcement of the 'Crying in a Rainstorm' Tour that's been sent to Alley's mail list. If you happen to be along our tour route somewhere, we'd love to meet you ( : Thanks for reading and listening! Allison Crowe's 'Crying In a Rainstorm' Tour is now ready for launch. Here's the way Allison Crowe was introduced to fans of multi-platinum recording artist and entertainer Jewel - when Allison was chosen to be featured guest artist on Jewel's official site (@ http://www.jeweljk.com ) in April of this year: "Beautifully moody or riotously rocking, Allison Crowe creates piano-based music of transcendent quality. A 20 year old singer/songwriter based in British Columbia, her voice, poetic and haunting, is a modern original. Allison is reaching new audiences this year with her debut album, 'midnight syren.' She's been called 'a mega-talent in the making' and her music is a testament to the power of the human voice and spirit." (fyi, the other Canadian artists to have been selected, over the years, as faves on Jewel's site are The Cowboy Junkies, and Oh Susanna.) And this is how Allison is billed in Victoria's Jazzfest International 2002 guide: "Described as 'the next big thing to come from Vancouver Island,' singer-pianist Allison Crowe is definitely a phenomenon in the making. Crowe is a certified poet whose rich, powerful voice shows the influences of everyone from Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan to Janis Joplin and even Nina Simone. Born and raised in Nanaimo, Crowe is a classically trained pianist who has gradually created her own special blend of jazz, folk, rock and blues. She will appear with longtime bandmates Dave Baird (bass) and Kevin Clevette (drums)." This summer, the 'Crying in a Rainstorm" Tour will introduce Allison Crowe, in concert, to music-loving people across the country. Encompassing 24 days, the tour, which features 17 performances in 15 different Canadian cities and spans six provinces, will kick off with a pair of shows in Allison's hometown of Nanaimo, BC and travel eastward as far as Montreal, QE before circling back. The intinerary of Allison and her band-mates, Dave and Kevin, presents an unique range of, (mostly all-ages), showcases. Venues selected for this inaugural national tour include soft-seat theatres, coffeehouses, nightclubs, restaurant/bistros, a baseball stadium, a youth centre, an art gallery, and festivals from jazz to folk and rock/alternative. Adding further dimension to the quality of these shows is the participation of original talent from different regions of Canada as support acts. Joining Allison's trio on most dates will be Terra Grimard, a vocalist/pianist from Kamloops, B.C. Terra, the first recipient of a scholarship from the Women Rock foundation in Vancouver, creates pop/rock sounds with jazz undertones. For several west coast dates, the lineup will be enhanced by Lori-Anne Jackson, a singer-songwriter who's just returned to B.C. from studies at Montreal's McGill University. Lori-Anne's guitar and piano based writings place her in the stylistic company of such acts as Canada's Emm Gryner. In Alberta, acoustic musician greg snell (guitar/vocals) joins the bill, along with bassist stan dorsett - appealing to Pearl Jam and heartland music fans alike. And, for Toronto's Rivoli show, the soulful Tanisha Taitt will bring her melodies and lyrics to the stage, backed by her groovily ambient piano/guitar/drums combo. Other artists will make special appearances in different locations. More details on all of these shows will be posted soon on Allison's website @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com (And there's fresh word upcoming on Allison's "Midnight" video, her "Midnight Syren" album, and future activities.) Right now, you'll find the 'Crying in a Rainstorm" Tour dates listed below.
