Hello! With both early morning and late evening live broadcasts, this is a long day for our "pixie of the piano" (CBC website's description of Sarah -LOL!) I'm very happy that Tab is on the case so we wouldn't miss these! I've watched my tape and enjoyed watching her Canada AM appearences this morning. Realizing that not everyone on this list is able to pick up CTV, I've typed out a transcript since these were good, informative (though short) interviews. Don't read the rest of this post if you haven't watched your tapes yet and don't want the spoiler. Take care, Dave www.ryerson.ca/~dupham Sarah Slean on CTV's Canada AM, March 28, 2002 Slightly abridged transcript Hosts: Jeff Hutcheson, Jennifer Ward Approx 8:45 EST: Jeff's intro: Here to swing (a Freudian slip!), I mean SING "Sweet Ones" is Sarah Slean. SARAH AND BAND PERFORMS "SWEET ONES" Jeff: How do you describe that sound we just heard? SS: A cabaret romp... a little bit of rock pop. Jen: Is it difficult to be heard as a new artist? To get your sound out there? SS: Yeah, (shrugs) I mean, if you put the work in though... Jeff: Your songs have been featured in "Party of Five", "Dawson's Creek"... Jen: "Felicity"... SS interjects: I was the background noise in "Party of Five"! Jeff: ...also the movie "Joyride". Your song "Weight" was in that as well. So that kind of mass exposure must be the biggest added bonus ever. SS: Yes, it's totally great! It was nice to be in "Dawson's Creek" during a NICE moment at the prom. Jen: And that show is SO popular. What's your inspiration? SS: Oh jeez... books, movies... life. Jeff: Our inspiration now is to hit this commercial break in 5 seconds! Sarah will return in the next hour. Approx 9:50 EST: Jen's intro: Her music has been highlighted on television shows like "Felicity" and "Dawson's Creek" and recently in the new film "Joyride". She is Canada's own Sarah Slean! Her new CD is called "Night Bugs" Let's listen... SARAH AND BAND PERFORMS "ELIOT" Jeff: The new CD is called "Night Bugs" You wrote, and produced this as well. Why did you cross over to the production from just being the artist? I mean, did you just want total control? SS: I actually co-produced it with Hawksley Workman who is also from Toronto. But I'm a control freak and have to have my fingers on all the pots. Jen: When was the first time you realized you had a great voice and that you could sing? SS: Thank you! (laughs) Jen: Because you do! SS: Thanks, I was actually into Classical music since I was 5 or 6, and I started singing 4 or 5 years later, doing silly musicals and stuff at my house with my friends, and it just evolved into this. Jeff: Who were you listening to during that period of time? Who were you favorites? Jen: Go ahead, age us now! Let us know who you grew up with. SS: I started with songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Roberta Flack. But I really liked musicals, and I really liked Queen as a kid. Jeff: Alright! Jen: We know Queen! Jeff: Anyways, Sarah Slean, nice to see you. (to band) Thanks guys, it's great! We'll be back with more Canada AM after this...
