Yep, it is in fact a new marketing plan several labels have adopted - Sarah and Remy's discs are among the first to take advantage of it. I think it's a neat way to capitalize on something many of us music fans have been doing all along, by putting an artist's song on a mix tape or CD for a friend. It's one of the more astute moves the labels have made in madly trying to save themselves from imminent extinction, I'd say. I particularly like the 2 tracks chosen off the Sarah disc - "Sweet Ones" and "Weight" (if those songs don't hook 'em, nothing will ;)), and if getting an extra 'passer' disc with the Remy Shand album doesn't reel ya in, the limited $9.99 (!) price certainly will. ;) For more on the 'pass this on' tactic: http://www.chartattack.com/DAMN/2002/01/2905.cfm - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 12:34:02 +0000 From: "Salman Talat" Subject: Re: Bonus CD Tracks When I bought the CD, it said "Weight" and "Sweet Ones" on the sticker on the CD but the bonus CD inside has "Eliot" and "St Francis." Some of you might remember her from the first Lilith Fair in Toronto... Last I heard, she was travelling and 'recording', nothing beyond that other than a duet on French singer Arthur H's 2000 album "Pour Madame X", and appearing at her mom's photo exhibit in Montreal last year. OK, I gt my CD today (not bad for ordering Monday!). My initial reaction (did skip Eliot); the album is kindof busy. It was rather expected, so no biggy. Keep in mind that I am a very picky bastard. Weight: sounds slippery, heftly dramatized, lots of gizmo and computerish background sounds, almost enough to break consistancy. Bits are quite appealing, but I'd probably take out the 2nd voice near the end ("do you know the way-ee-eight?"). I probably prefer the original, only because this new version makes my head spin with all of the sounds begging 'listen to me!'. Maybe that'll change once I give it a few more listens. Duncan: beautiful piano intro.. it's quite lovely up to "She was a treat for the eye" which is a little bumpy (I liked "make you want", but the "just" has been there for awhile, so s'ok.) I wished that the end was done up more prettily, it sortof feels like the first chorus, only louder. Overall though, three and a half stars. St. Francis... my second favorite on the disk. Subtle, honest voice. The lyrics are beautiful, and listen for that "wasn't brave at all"... aaahh :). Even the over-dubbing on this track feels right. Drastic Measures doesn't do much for me. Book Smart and Sweet Ones were on the EP. Dark Room is nice. The quality of My Invitation is greatly increased. Bank Accounts is charming. (Phew) Now, to my favorite part: Me, I'm a Theif. It's so very dark. The slow pumping heart, the first chorus like a knife in the belly. I'm an addict. As far as I'm concerned, it's the jewel of this album; an opal. If wishes were horses, this disc would have "Closer", "Julia" (man, oh man), maybe "Ogony Star" and a cover of "Lilac Wine" (And should I seek therapy? Maybe anti-depressants?). Interestingly, I'm not missing "Last Year's War"... I like "Theif" better. But this lineup will likely grow on me, not sure about "Eliot" or "Book Smart", but certainly the rest. :) Gina - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rory Sweeting" To: Sent: Thursday, March 21, 2002 2:27 PM Subject: Now & Eye on Night Bugs, and more > Hi all; > > For those of you (like me) who live outside Toronto, here's this week's > review of Night Bugs from Now and Eye Magazines: > > http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2002-03-21/music_discs3.php > > http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_03.21.02/music/ondisc.html > > > Haven't heard Night Bugs myself yet, but I'm a little disapointed with the > old songs getting recycled yet again. My album is somewhere between the HMV's shipping centre and here (probably without the bonuses.. oh well), but I do have promo material to review. My rating system will go as follows: +/- for thumps up and thumbs down. 1- Eliot - Didn't ever listen to it full-through on the Summer 2001 EP, so I was pleased to hear it in full now. I like the ending as a massive climax, although I also dig the original. (+) 2- Weight - Big fan of original, but really dig the modernized take on this one. I was never swayed much by the lyrics to this track, so I'm glad it got a musical makeover that is good compensation for the so-so lyrics. Love the second voice in the background near the end that Sophie didn't. :) (+) 3- Duncan - I've had a live version of this on the computer for a few months, and I've really liked it as a sing-a-long song. It's not as impressive on the album, but I'm happy enough with it. Oh you fool you fool... (+) 4- St Francis - NEW TO ME - I did a little net research on the origin of "St Francis" because I'm not religious so I didn't know the reference. Haven't fully understood the song yet but it's definitely one of the best "quiet" songs that Sarah's released. (+) 5- Drastic Measures - NEW TO ME - Doesn't do a lot for me... Don't mind the chorus, "with the last ???? of the ??? ???" I like. I think it has human race in there, but I'm not sure. I can't rate the album PERFECT so I will give this (-) 6- Book Smart Street Stupid - Love it. It didn't immediately catch for me on the EP, but I think that was mostly due to readjusting to the vocal styling. I've heard a live version of it and I'm very impressed. (+) 7- Dark Room. Opening cello reminds me of "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" (probably only because of so much use of cello in that soundtrack.) Interesting to hear an instrumental track, especially since I see that it was originally thought to be on "Blue Parade". Big fan of strings... (+) 8- Sweet Ones - Those piano chords just don't give up, do they? I can't wait to hear it live, it's a very fun song. Love the call-backs (always said, so fabulous)... (+) 9- Me I'm a Thief. BLOWN away. It'll probably unseat "Blue Parade" as my favourite Sarah track within a few more weeks. It has so much emotion, style, heartache, and yet I have no idea what the song's about at this point. :) I also feel it could be an amazing trance track, but that's just my preference. :) (+++) 10- My Invitation - the original was so perfect in its own little world, I don't see why it had to be redone. Especially since it seems to be redone to a "T" and I don't feel it gained anything. (-) 11- Bank Accounts. "I am a beauty / just takes me 4/5 hours a day / is this the game I'm supposed to know how to play?"... Probably 2nd favourite on this album. "Welcome to Eden / hope that you'll have some time to shop / makin' investments / sleepin' your way to the top.." Wow. Yep, Definite favourite. :) It may just be a theme song, seeing as just *love* capitalism so much >:) (++) Well, there you have it. Not sure if I really contributed anything, but I'm interested in other's track-by-track reviews. Always adds depth to my understanding of the songs.
