None of the major stores in NYC had Night Bugs today. At HMV in Times Square, the manager, who happened to be at the counter when I asked for it, looked puzzled and said someone else had just come in looking for it too. She knew of Sarah but she hadn't heard anything about the new CD. Next stop, Virgin Megastore. I squeezed past a mob of people lined up for some 'N Sync event and found a knowledgeable-looking employee. Wouldn't you know it, he was the manager in charge or ordering pop-rock products. To his credit, he pointed me towards a stack of Sarah's EPs but told me he hadn't been solicited by Atlantic on anything new, and hadn't heard a thing about it. Third stop, FYE Entertainment at Radio City Music Hall. After a couple of employees checked their new release hot sheet and typed Sarah's name wrong into the computer a few times before I spelled it out for them, they informed me they had nothing on her, new or old. Final stop, my computer, where I ordered it from HMV Canada (where it's still listed as "pre-order only"). Guess we'll get to hear it next week if the mail handlers are kind. Are they still shipping the postcards and bonus CD, or was that only for real pre-orders? Sorry, but not a very impressive effort on Atlantic's part so far in some of New York's most prominent music stores. Too bad - judging from that first stop at HMV, I'm not the only one who was looking for her down here today either. I was there probably around 5:45-6:00 tonight... spoke with a blond lady behind the counter. Is that who you spoke with?! I was disappointed too, to find that it wasn't around here. I guess I'll just order it from HMV where it's decidely cheap... but will probably take 5 weeks to arrive. Sorry to be repeating stuff guys, but can anyone tell me if I've missed out on the "postcards" and the bonus cd? When I looked at hmv.com it wasn't clear that these would be included. Do I need to follow a special link, or have I missed my window of opportunity? Thanks, Sharon (all the way from London, England). _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 07:41:38 -0500 (EST) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: Meanwhile, south of the border... HMV will ship promo (pre-order only) stuff as long as they have it, esp if its still _listed_ as pre-order. I ordered my Rinocerose on its release date and eventually (only after I took their name in vain) the promo ep showed up. The cards are v. cool and in a TOTALLY Sleanesque touch, they are bound together with ribbon and a leeetle Night Bug ;-) > Sorry, but not a very impressive effort on Atlantic's part so far in some > of New York's most prominent music stores. Whereas, in little ol' Guelph, the use CD place had a promo copy from somewhere and was playing the _hell_ out of it and this was Sunday. Unless... is there a different US release date that we just don't know about? You know, I went to check this AM and she's off the In Music page already and is no longer listed in the pre-orders section. Though it is $15.99 instead of $17.99 and is still only available in pre-order. If you click on Customer Service you can get a web-form where you can e-mail in questions. I'd recommend asking them directly. James. (Who did actually still get the Rinocerose ep when this same thing happened to him, but would ask anyway.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 11:18:45 -0500 From: badly drawn woj Subject: Re: Meanwhile, south of the border... when we last left our heroes, James McGarry exclaimed: >Unless... is there a different US release date that we just don't know >about? hmmm. it's not on ice's list , which is generally meticulously complete. not sure if it had been there previously though. +w ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 11:35:44 -0500 From: What? Okay everybody, raise your hand if you're surprised! :P I do have to say I'm impressed that Atlantic is at least allowing Sarah to shop the record around in the US. They could have released it with zero promotion and let it die, thus preventing her from releasing it anywhere else. If I might offer a humble suggestion of label possibilities: Zoe/Rounder seems to be doing a pretty good job with Sarah Harmer so far. They're also very nice to a few of my other favorite musicians, namely Merrie Amsterburg and The Nields. Assuming they haven't already filled their quota of Canadians named Sarah, I think it'd be a good fit. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 23:57:10 -0500 From: DanS Subject: Re: Slean in America Heather wrote: >Atlantic has chosen not to release "Night Bugs" in the US. Oh well, EMI pulled the same trick with Nickelback, not releasing their album in the U.S., and look where it got them. Nickelback went on to score a #1 hit in America on another label. Meanwhile, EMI just had to cut 1800 jobs after their American crown jewel Mariah Carey tanked. Just goes to show, you've gotta stick with the Canadians or you're doomed. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 04:54:13 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Re: Slean in America Meredith wrote: >If I might offer a humble suggestion of label possibilities: Zoe/Rounder >seems to be doing a pretty good job with Sarah Harmer so >far. Yep, it is in fact a new marketing plan several labels have adopted - Sarah and Remy's discs are among the first to take advantage of it. I think it's a neat way to capitalize on something many of us music fans have been doing all along, by putting an artist's song on a mix tape or CD for a friend. It's one of the more astute moves the labels have made in madly trying to save themselves from imminent extinction, I'd say. I particularly like the 2 tracks chosen off the Sarah disc - "Sweet Ones" and "Weight" (if those songs don't hook 'em, nothing will ;)), and if getting an extra 'passer' disc with the Remy Shand album doesn't reel ya in, the limited $9.99 (!) price certainly will. ;) For more on the 'pass this on' tactic: http://www.chartattack.com/DAMN/2002/01/2905.cfm - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ End of navy-soup-digest V5 #53 ******************************
