Hopefully in May, we will see music played >there again. The situation is still touch-and-go, as the co-owners/developers of the Gladstone are in somewhat of a snit following miscommunication during this recent insurance problem... The developer who bought the hotel 2 years ago, Michael Tippin, is known for buying and restoring old heritage buildings (and is known to be quite sensitive and has a good rep for actually maintaining old features of these buildings without completely gentrifying them), so when I was at NOW mag the summer before last, I wrote an article about how he was promising that the Gladstone would maintain most of its quirky charm despite the overhaul. Well, that 'quirky charm' he spoke about may or may not include the longtime residents of the hotel - the battered old relic is one of the only places left that will rent out a room to these people, who really couldn't afford anything else. Now that the insurance problem has been worked out, it remains to be seen what will happen to the hotel and the residents themselves when renovations begin, and prices skyrocket after it's over. ANYway, real estate lesson aside ;), my point is that I'm guessing that we should enjoy the Art Bar while we can when and if it reopens. (BTW, for anyone who hasn't been, it's a very romantic space - tiny, dark, and mysterious. :)) >Has anyone gone to see any shows at Revival on College? It's more of an upscale 'club' rather than the typical music venue, but they have made more of a commitment to live music following the success of their soul/urban music nights. They started with weekly residencies, then added more nights, and have now branched out to other types of music, because it's a beautiful space, and more artists have requested to play there (although if it's not urban music, it's still used mostly only for CD releases and the like, 'big' shows, so to speak). For those of you that have seen that (ubiquitous) Remy Shand video, the club looks very much like the club in that video (although I don't *think* it's actually Revival in the video). >There is also the new space at the Hard Rock Cafe... Club 279 which >is quite a nice space. I saw Vyletz playing there on Wednesday night >and >it was such a classy space. Quite large. It is a big space, very new, very sleek, but it's a little too 'suburban dance club' for me ;) - as in, a little too over-the-top, trying too hard to please. I'm sure it packs in the Hard Rock tourists, though, and it is excellent to have a live music venue smack-dab in the middle of downtown. Ivana Santilli is scheduled to play there in mid-April, actually, which will be nice... >Hugh's Room is also an amazing space, too bad it is so far from the > >downtown core. Quite far, but a lovely, warm room with excellent folk-music bookings. It is strictly a folk club, though, which, judging by its solid business, was sorely needed, but that doesn't really begin to plug the hole of decent small-to-mid-sized venues in Toronto. >Re: Martina Sorbara CD re-release > >There is no information on the Nettwerk site , however there is an > >extremely small version of one of my photos on the site (to my > >surprise). I'm not sure if it's going to end up being 5 tracks on the final CD, but I've heard 2 of the new tracks, and they're very much in the vein of the rest of the album tracks. Which is to say, if you liked those, then you'll like these. Her singing and playing have definitely strengthened from being on the road a lot in the past several months. - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Mar 2002 19:45:09 -0500 From: What?
