At least I know the release date of Natalie Imbruglia's new CD, but I still haven't heard when Heather Nova's South will be out here. It is extremely interesting to me that it would "drive you nuts" that albums are released first in countries that are not your own. Obviously you have not considered that universal releases are virtually impossible and so therefore a hierarchy is a natural, if not an assumed manner of doing things. I speak as an Australian who has coped for years with my favourite artists never touring "down under" and being never likely to do so. So whilst I understand your anxiousness, I cannot understand your arrogance that implies the US must be first in all matters. As a small aside Natalie's new album is rather mediocre but perhaps I remember her too much from her soap opera days and cannot disassociate myself from that. Cheers! G'day! I'm the new webmaster of her website, and it's been totally redesigned. There are some cool new MP3's of her live stuff up there and a message board. Hope you'll check it out. Actually, releases for large megastars are often synchronized. There is a slight variation due to the different industry trends in various countries. What I mean is that "new release day" in the US is Tuesday whereas in the UK I believe it's Monday. Other countries will have different trends. I know of at least three reasons CD releases are staggered. First, some artists are bigger in one part of the world than another. New releases are released there first to get an initial response to the album. If it's favorable, the release will continue in other parts of the world. Otherwise, I would not be surprised if it gets delayed even more due to a poor response. Second, some releases are timed to correspond with the artist's tour schedule. If Natalie Imbruglia is going to run around in Australia for 3 months before coming to the US, then it is likely her album will be released earlier in Australia, but not released in the US until her tour coincides. Simple marketing: new release spurs interest in the artist, artist touring spurs interest in the new release. Release the album too early, and by the time she gets here it will be old news. Third, some artists aren't perceived to have an audience in certain places. It explains why it takes an act of God (or whatever higher being you care to believe in) to get albums by Kylie Minogue released in the US, for example. Likewise Craig David (his album was released in the UK and the rest of the world over a year before the US). If you want to hear the new David Hasselhoff, you'll have to go to Germany. I've found this true for Kylie, Natalie, Ebba Forsberg, Craig David, and several others. If I was outside the US, it would be the same for Jonatha Brooke, Dar Williams, Tara MacLean, Sarah Slean, Sarah McLachlan, etc. My best advice is to become familiar with the various music webtailers around the world. I personally use HMV for a lot of stuff. http://www.hmv.com (Canada) http://www.hmv.co.uk (UK) http://www.hmv.com.au (Australia) http://www.hmv.de (Germany) http://www.hmv.co.jp (Japan) I don't really use Germany and Japan, but I thought I'd include them for completeness. All you need is a credit card. Sign up for their newsletters, and you'll keep up with all the new releases at each one. In addition, there are places you can go for Germany (if you have to have that new Hasselhoff), Sweden, Finland, and just about any place else you can imagine. I don't have any particular sites for those - I tend to use google or yahoo to find those. >I speak as an Australian who has coped for years with my favourite >artists never touring "down under" and being never likely to do so. So >whilst I understand your anxiousness, I cannot understand your arrogance >that implies the US must be first in all matters. I speak as a Texan who has to travel all over the US to get any decent concerts. I don't think Sarah Slean has played anywhere *near* here. Usually Canadian/US release dates are closer together than US/european release dates. I have a prerelease copy of it (cover art not final, track sequence not final). It's not bad but it's no Oyster (my favourite), at least on the first couple of spins. S P.S., if anyone's trying to get a hold of me via email, I'm checking my home email very sporadically now because my home computer got fried by a power surge. :( Claire typed: >Jon Wes said: It drives me nuts that most of my favorite artists release >CD's elsewhere before the US. Er, I think you're reading too much into it. I didn't say I expected it to be released in the US first. I just wish they would relase everywhere simultaneously. It is possible. Of course, since the US usually has new releases come out on Tuesday, there is a one day delay but that's it. I was really showing my frustration that so much good music gets ignored/under-promoted here and thus there are lags between the original release and US release on occasions. How you read all that into my little side note I don't understand. And believe me, there are PLENTY of items that we simply never see. Things like limited editions with extra tracks and singles never get released here. Oh well. As for the tour situation: Sure, we get people here in the US to do a few tour dates, but I have to go 3-4 hours to see anyone, and with my current transportational and financial situation they might as well be in Australia. Most acts that I like (and a great many are from Canada or Britain) seem to only tour just a few dates and expect that to be enough to break into the American market. So, since I don't live in one of the major cities they come to, I'm left out.
