Hi, Julian responded, >Thinking of our favourite Warner Brothers screwage with Suddenly, Tammy! are >we, meth? :-( Yes, but not exclusively. I was also thinking of Brenda Kahn, The Nields, Splashdown, Aimee Mann, post-Natalie Merchant 10,000 Maniacs ... the list goes on and on and on. In this day and age, a major label deal almost always ends very badly for the artist. (Say what you want about Courtney Love, but the girl's got a point.) Sarah doesn't deserve what I fear is already starting to happen. If her album is ever released, I don't expect there to be another from Warner Bros. The consolidation of the majors into one Record Company Conglomerate means that in the not too distant future, the only major-label artists will be the prepackaged confections that have been taking over the airwaves for the past few years. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 15:53:01 EST From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: Re: Album release? Yeah, sad. There is a new artist named Vanessa Carlton who plays piano (and she is actually quite the pianist for a 21-year-old!) who was signed to Interscope a year ago and her single "1000 Miles" has already received airplay on MTV and MTV2 recently and her album will be done in March. I've heard a bunch of her songs live and she does have good potential... she looks a lot like Michelle Branch and her voice sounds a little like hers too, but her songs are way more passionate and interesting and complex. Anyway! If she is successful perhaps this could be a positive thing and the response to her (people have said things like "wow! someone with talent on MTV!", etc.) could be a nice shift from the overwhelming boybandbritney crap trend that has been flooding the music industry... I hope Sarah doesn't get screwed by Atlantic but I guess in some ways she already has been (geez, the album was finished long ago!)... such a shame. Far be it for me to start defending the majors, but I think folks may be forgetting that there could be myriad reasons for the delay - Sarah's mentioned more than once that she doesn't want the album to come out at a time when the label can't give it its full attention and support (e.g. at a time when they've got other, 'bigger' releases planned, for instance) - she's waited far too long for it to simply get lost in the shuffle (which, obviously, could still very well happen). So, yeah, it's been ages since the album's been done and ready to go, but if extra time means that the label is willing to step up to the plate and ensure that the album gets a proper push, then I for one welcome that. - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 21:26:07 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: BST: Ted's Wrecking Yard update - The Final Chapter? The saga continues (and I apologize to all the non-Torontonians who are probably getting really sick of me talking about this ;))... The term 'just desserts' seems to apply here. I'm normally not one to gloat , but there's some comfort to us Ted's regulars that we won't have to see our beloved haunt taken over after all. Okay, so we've still lost a great club, but there'll be no neon palms to add insult to injury. ;) I find this whole business of the Ted's/Barcode space not being licensed as a club (apparently they were skirting the bylaw by calling themselves a 'restaurant'? LOL - anyone else recall the disastrous foray into serving 'food' downstairs at Barcode in summer '99? :P) very odd - perhaps it's just another way of getting Dan Burke out, but if it's really the case, perhaps that would have been Ted's eventual downfall anyway. Interesting. Anyhow, for those who have *no* clue what I'm babbling about, the old Ted's Wrecking Yard club will *not* be allowed to become the 'new' El Mocambo after all.
