I must admit I was not as impressed by the new band and agree with you wholeheartedly that Kevin Fox was meant to play with her. They were as a unit, just so tight, and his vocals just complemented hers so well... oh well, nothing good is ever permanent, right? Despite some faults, last night's show was fabulous. The crowd was big (a sell-out), but the intimate setting of The Grand Theatre made it feel like we were back in The Toucan. The show started with the Be Good Tanyas, a trio of blue-grass ladies. Not a bad group, but a little overly twangy, and the lead singer was raspy and hard to understand (can we say "machine-gun-vocals"?). Their banter was somewhat annoying though, and they came off as somewhat snarky. However, I'm sure they're probably nice girls off stage ;-) Their drummer stuck out like a sore thumb though, dressed more like he was going to a Parliament concert (although it was a really nice shirt!) The second warm-up was Justin Bird. Never heard of this guy, and there's probably a reason. He's freaky. Picture someone from an Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical, singing alt-country/grunge/bizarro. Audience gave him polite applause, but people were rather confused. Unfortunately Justin didn't introduce the rest of his band. Bad form. Finally, after two opening bands (argh) and a lengthy intermission, Sarah and Co. took the stage. As predicted, it was her "new" band; I was surprised they and their egos were able to fit on the stage. They don't fit with Sarah's obvious sincerety at all. Spencer Evans made a surprise guest-appearance - yay! He played clarinet for one song, Around This Corner. I think over the evening she played every song from You Were Here. There were a few covers including a Johnny Cash song :-), and "The Cherry Song/Wedding Song". Some new ones: I am a Mountain, about her experience with a Tarot reading, and another song she wrote for a friend who went to the Quebec protest in the spring. Oleander was also a nice surprise, as the famous plant was actually on-stage with her ;-) All-in-all, an excellent show. Nice and long, and lots of appreciation from the home-town crowd. There were a few obnoxious people who talked through the first two bands. How rude. My only other complaint was the lighting - spinning spotlights that kept blinding the audience. You'd think that the roadies would think about that. If only there were a way to sneak in to tonight's show too :-) I'll be looking forward to the Weeping Tile Christmas Concert, which is definitely happening this year: http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusicArtistsW/weepingtile.html I also spoke to someone who said the show will be at The Elixir this year, and if the article above is correct it'll be on December 20th. YAY! Anyways, I guess that's enough blabbing for now - cheers to those of you who actually got through it all! Cheerio! (there simply hasn't been any time for him to work on it while he's been continuously out on the road...) i had the pleasure of hearing a few tracks quite some time ago. beautiful. cheers, heather ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2001 16:59:12 -0500 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: Re: OAC: Sarah Harmer Justine wrote: >Although my memory may be failing me, I'm 99% sure Kevin was not with Sarah >when she played London back in September. I don't know who was/is in her new band, but didn't recognize the drummer either (although Sarah S. had stolen Adam Hay from Martina for the show).
