Just curious. I just heard >it >for the first time today (the entire version, anyway), and I really >like >it. Especially the horn arrangement. Very cool. She's never really said exactly what it was *about* (then again, she doesn't usually, does she? Wants the listener to rely on their own interpretation, I suppose), but she's talked about how the song was born: (From eye Weekly:) "Well, I have this thing about Scotch," she laughs. "It's such a magical drink, like a porthole to another world. So I was enjoying some Scotch, reconnecting with past lives or something. Hawksley walked by and heard me playing this new song and told our engineer Cliff Norrell to roll tape. That's where the song 'Book Smart, Street Stupid' came from -- some good Scotch." And during her set at our benefit show back in August, she mentioned her trip to Paris and reading Jean Rhys' 'Good Morning Midnight' as having inspired the song. >I keep thinking that hearing "Ogoni Star" right now would bring me a >lot >of comfort for some reason... I don't know why. I heard that song >live >about 3 years ago and I always thinking about it. She played that one solo at the benefit after a long, long time, and it was exquisite. I think I probably speak for many when I say that I really hope that she *does* record it one day, if even only as a B-side or something, as she's lately been talking about possibly releasing some material that way because she has so many songs stockpiled outside of the yet-to-be-released major label LP. - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Nov 2001 19:06:18 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Re: english moon? -- And Ted's set list Catchin' up on more old listmail... It was a *terrific* show, sadly and shockingly under-attended. I've never seen that few people in Lee's Palace - there must've been 30 people, our little gang helping me at the merch table notwithstanding. I mean, okay, it wasn't hugely promoted, it was a Thursday night, and the weather was bad, but really those are all excuses. The last time Emm played Lee's, the place was packed - I would've thought we were at the point where people would see her name on a bill and come out regardless, even if it wasn't a 'headlining' show. She played quite a lengthy and lovely set as it was, and aside from Emm, it was a *great* lineup - Andrea Koziol, Mia Sheard, Kurt Swinghammer, and organizer Tanisha Taitt herself (backed by the legendary Mr. Jeff Healey). So I was pretty surprised at the lack of turnout, and just want to urge everyone on the lists to really make an effort to support benefit shows of this nature. The organizers put heart and soul into pulling these things together, and they *and* the artists count on *you* guys to come out. It's a really easy way to contribute some money and support to good causes, too. Despite the small crowd, it was a very pleasant, low-key evening with a warm, convivial vibe. It felt slightly surreal and pretty nice to be able to hear a pin drop in that cavern where you can't usually breathe or hear yourself think. ;) And it felt special being in the company of such staggerng talents and their fans, and reminded me of the sheer depth and community of the local scene (something that's more important that ever to keep in mind in the face of recent events, I suppose). >Emm didn't get on stage until after 11:30 but it was worth the wait. She >sounded fantastic and sported extremely cute hair. =) There's another thing y'all missed (although the hood-sporting Ms. G is probably relieved most people missed that little hair mishap ;)) - Emm as a *blond*. I thought it was pretty darn cool, even if for one night. *And* I believe we heard the Toronto premiere of "Starcraft Camper Blues" (I've never heard it before, anyway), plus the unveiling of a beautiful cover of "Lovers in a Dangerous Time". Add the kicker of the always heartwrenching "Case of Tornados", and well, it was a killer. But then, what Emm shows *aren't*? :) >Anyway, the whole night was amazing. I think someone's already mentioned this, but Andrea Koziol was the blond mommy-to-be with the jazzy pipes, and she's got a new EP called "Simple" out now, and host Tanisha Taitt with the big, classic voice has a self-titled cassette that you can pick up at shows or in he indie section of some stores (I've seen it at the flagship Sam's on Yonge - don't even get me started on its closing ). - - Tab :) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Nov 2001 20:20:40 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Re: R.I.P. The Kool Haus, Ware Haus, whatever the hell they want to call it ;-P, isn' a 'mid-sized venue', it's a shed. And it has a split-personality complex - can't decide whether it's a nightclub or live venue. It's all very well and good that the place has been vastly improved in the past year, but all the renos and big money in the world can't change the fact that the very fact that Kool Haus and its ilk are even *considered* 'mid-sized venues' is part of the problem. - - T. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Nov 2001 21:00:08 From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Re: the el mo takes over ted's OR Dan Burke gets what's comin' to him Julian wrote: >http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2001-11-01/music_feature3.html > >I'm beside myself with anger. You know, I would've probably taken several paragraphs just to say the exact same thing, so thanks, Julian. ;) Well said. I'm also incredibly outraged, especially as I was one of many who were ready to stand up for the ElMo when it faced closing, despite hardly ever frequenting the joint and not even being into the type of sounds it championed at all. I was more concerned with the potential loss of an indie live music venue, which ultimately hurts the entire communiy, not just those bands and parons it serves. But now ElMo booker Dan Burke thinks that his particular club is just so important that it justifies stealing (and really, that's what it was) someone else's club? In the end, we're still down an indie live music venue. Wasn't that was it was supposed to be about, Dan? Oh, no, wait - apparently it was just about saving *his* piece of the pie, anyone else be damned. But what goes around comes around, and I was actually quite perversely glad to read in the Star today that the new owner of he ElMo is putting up a fight to deny Burke the rights to he ElMo name and signage. If it's true that Burke and co. indeed bought the rights a few years ago, I suppose he won't succeed in keeping them from having it, but it's some small smug consolation at the immediate moment, anyway. Just the very idea of that garish neon palm over the threshold of Ted's makes my skin crawl. (The article doesn't seem to be up on the Star's website for some reason, sorry, or I would've posted the entire link. Essential reading for anyone following this issue, though, so I recommend picking up or hunting down today's Star.) Not only was a vital venue and musical touchstone taken from us, but it's the very *way* it was done that's the real blow here. There's nothing Ted's booker Yvonne Matsell, the fans, or the musicians could have done to stop his from happening. *We* didn't have a chance to hold meetings, appeal to politicians, sign petitions like the ElMo crew did in their hour of crisis. And so the memories of the last few years are buried along with the potential to create new ones at grungy, cozy ol' Ted's. I hate the feeling of simply sitting on the sidelines and doing nothing about this, so I've done the only thing we *can* do at this point - I've written a letter to the editor which I plan to send to the Star and the 2 weeklies, so if anyone wants to simply join in and sign their name to that one letter, please e-mail me with your name and number. Might be nice to have some sort of small united final show of support. Thanks, Tab. I'm not quite as eloquent as you, though, especially in raising some of the points below. In particular: > Not only was a vital venue and musical touchstone taken from us, but it's > the very *way* it was done that's the real blow here. Which is exactly what is so aggravating; I feel used. Dan Burke and the ElMo group have courted public opinion over the last few weeks to try and stop the new landlord from taking possession of the old building and converting it. However, when that didn't work (as it was bound not to -- when a building is sold, the new landlord obviously has the right to do whatever they want with it) they simply dirtied their hands and stole someone else's club out from under them. It's clear where Burke's loyalties lie: with his own club, to the exclusion of everyone else's, and to the local music scene in general. It's totally disgusting. And there's not a damn thing we can do about it. The whole episode reminds me of Sun Microsystems vs. Microsoft; Sun keeps taking Microsoft to court in "defense of intellectual freedom" and all this shit, but the reality is that they themselves would attempt to stifle intellectual freedom if they were the market leaders. In other words, generating public sympathy over the loss of a "community", while in the backrooms looking after one's own needs first. > I hate the feeling of simply sitting on the sidelines and doing nothing > about this, so I've done the only thing we *can* do at this point - I've > written a letter to the editor which I plan to send to the Star and the 2 > weeklies, so if anyone wants to simply join in and sign their name to that > one letter, please e-mail me with your name and number.
