This morning I woke up so excited... I'd been looking forward to Sarah's concert for months and I already had tickets. Yes, I was going to Lee's Palace to see my fave singer perform. I opened up to the entertainment section of the Toronto Star and WOW! There was an article about Sarah herself! So I read it. And upon reading that there was going to a be a certain "Theme" to tonight's concert I decided that me and my best friend who had intended to getting to the concert were going to "Dress for the occasion"... it being a "Tim Burton meets 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' " type theme, we thought it would be great fun. So out we went, me and my friend to get all the things we needed for our "Costumes"- wings, feather boas, fake flowers to make tiaras, the works. And we worked long and hard all day- even sewing the wings to our favorite shirts for the occasion in hopes to get noticed by Sarah. We jumped on a bus and made the long commute from Richmond Hill down to Lee's Palace (in the rain, no less!), decked out and glittery. We were even there an hour early! But see, there was one slight problem that we thought might not come up, since it hadn't at the last concert at the Riv- we are 18. One year short of being "of age". We hadn't even gotten carded at The Riv. But being paranoid as we were, I decided to go into Lee's Palace to talk to someone about whether or not we would be able to get in. As soon as I passed through the doors I was confronted by this big burly guy who looked drunk himself. "What are you doing in here?" he asked me... I could hear Sarah playing "Eliot" in the background... I told him precisely what I was doing. And I was polite about it. I told him that we weren't even going to go near the bar. I told him that the only reason we were here was to hear Sarah. The only reason we were dressed up was because it was a theme. The guy was completely rude, dismissing me as a "kid". So I finally gave in, but I had one request- I wanted to just slip in a moment to get -one picture- of Sarah warming up at least before we scrammed. (One picture on the twenty-dollar disposable camera I'd bought ten minutes prior just for the show.) Of course that was too much to ask, and he all but kicked me out of there. I was disappointed and sad. Sarah being my fave artist, all I wanted to do was see her live again. Even a picture would have been great, since I didn't bring a camera last time I saw her. Too much to ask? I don't think so. Quite obviously, "Scary Door Man" did. And so I'm hoping Sarah will start playing some all-ages venues around here... I know it would make her underage fans tremendously happy... ~Amanda _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 01:27:27 -0400 From: Justin Subject: Re: Lee's Palace Show if it's any consolation to Amanda (and possibly Zeina), I have another horror story about the doorman at Lee's Palace. Last year, when I was only 35, I went to see Kinnie Starr there. I live in Montreal, so my ID is from Quebec; also, I have no driver's license, only a health insurance card. The extremely rude and belligerent doorman basically said if I couldn't produce an Ontario driver's license he wasn't going to let me in. I pointed out that their official policy poster said that health insurance cards were acceptable, to which he replied that they only took Canadian cards. (As if one from Quebec isn't.) Another few minutes of argument, with the moderation of another door-guard, and they finally decided they might let me in. What a waste of energy. On a much happier note, and more pertinent to this list, I finally got to see Sarah Slean at the Spectrum in Montreal last week (having missed her performance in Ottawa last spring, as well as every single Toronto concert ever, sigh). The Spectrum serves alcohol, but they still allow all ages into the hall (it even says so on the ticket) and check ID at the bar if necessary. Sarah's performance lasted only an hour because she was opening for another Sarah (Harmer). But it was long enough to win me over entirely and to have me anticipating full-length performances next year. justin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 15:53:53 -0400 From: "spark" Subject: Toronto: Lee's Palace / Ted's Wrecking Yard hey there people... Well, I was in attendance at Sarah's show last night ( 28 / 9 / 01 ) .. *wow* is all I can say.. She sure has changed. As I heard one person describe the show, it was very *campy*... Campy with a triple shot of espresso or something. Anyhow, I wanted to mention a couple things. I got to talk with Sarah, who is still her ENTIRELY charming and sweet self :) .. she told me her album will be released in January.. and that Last Year's War WONT be on it at all, not even as a hidden track.. but that it WILL be a b-side. She promised it to me to my face. ;) so I sure hope that comes true.. lol :) Also, I heard people outside the venue before the doors opened say that Sarah was playing at Ted's Wrecking Yard this Monday... anyone know anything about that?? - - Ian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 16:13:00 -0400 From: "Greco Promotions" Subject: Re: Lee's/Ted's She'll be performing at Ted's as part of the weekly Maple Mondays event alongside other performers (I believe Martina Sorbara, Dan Bryk will be among them.) Subject: lee's palace show/partial set list hey soupers, i just wanted to put my two cents in with respect to amanda's email and the lee's palace show last night (thursday). i think it really sucks that amanda and who knows how many other sarah fans out there weren't able to attend last night's show. i hope in the future that sarah will be able to peform a tad bit larger venue(s) (i mean, come on...toronto is a pretty big city, and i'm sure there must be at least one other venue out there that can hold more people, including our fellow slean fans who are not of age...i just put myself in amanda's and other people's shoes and i must say it must totally suck to not be able to attend a favourite artist's show because of an age barrier.) so there's my two cents on that issue. as for the show last night. i thought it was amazing. sarah just gets better and better with each performance, at least in my humble opinion!!!! does anyone know the exact set list? here is what i remember from last night (almost in correct order): 1) ?????"this is kind of a new song" is all she said to introduce the song 2) eliot 3) bank accounts 4) duncan 5) ????? 6) sweet ones 7) weight 8) some cover which sarah stood up to sing, no keys, just voice and band 9) ????? sarah picked up the electric guitar and joined the band to perform a song to which i don't know the name!!!! 10) vertigo (sarah on guitar, along with the band) 11) book smart, street stupid 12) drastic measures (personally, my most favourite sarah and her band song live to date!!!! thank goodness she said it will be on the new album...if you haven't heard this song yet...all i have to say is yum yum) 13) ????? newer song (she's played it before, but i don't know the name)????? encore 14) el scorcho (i've never heard sarah's version of this which is pretty much the same as weezer's original song...but i like sarah's rendition better because of her voice of course!) 15) i can not remember her last song for the life of me!!!! can someone please add the missing piece to this puzzle? later all michael - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 20:56:11 -0400 (EDT) From: ".-) Chopper One Eyed =W=illy =W=onka" Subject: sarah in rochester last week... hi everyone, my name is steve. ive been a huge sarah fan since early 2000 when she started getting heavy airplay here in rochester, ny on WBER (the only station that matters... http://wber.monroe.edu ) ive seen her 4 times, including last saturday night here in rochester. an amazing thing happened that night... this will prolly get pretty long... before my first sarah show i talked to her on the air during a radio interview for about 10 minutes. it was completely rad and we had a bonding-session of sorts along with the amazing hawksley workman who opened for her that night. heh. through that interview she came to recognize me and speak to me as weezersteve...a name bestowed on me by WBER. so i talked to her after the next 3 shows and shes just so nice and so talented and so beautiful. so saturday night...she starts her set by playing a couple songs. then her band leaves the stage so she can play some solo stuff...she struts over and picks up the guitarists guitar and she says something like: "i feel like playing the guitar now..." she strums a few chords, plucks a few notes, and says: "im gonna dedicate this song out to a great guy named steve whos standing right here in the front row!" at that point the biggest smile ive ever had popped onto my face. i was amazed. i didnt think it could get any better...but it did...oh it sure did! she starts playing the song and...its a =w= song...its butterfly!!!!! holy moly. she held her own on the guitar part but oh my goodness she did some amazing things with the vocal melody! rivers himself would have been proud! such a beautiful voice that girl has... one week later im still in shock! i cant believe she actually put the song in her set...let alone dedicate it to me! man oh man, shes just simply amazing!!! such incredible talent...such incredible beauty... im out of words. it was so surreal. the show was professionally recorded so if i can manage to get my hands on a copy (i know how she is about bootlegs and things...but i must have it!!!) and if its cool with her/her management, id be willing to make a few cdr copies for people...but only if its cool with her! thanks for reading everyone! its nice to be on a list full of other people who share my love for sarah! later..... ************************************************************************ * ok * * bye bye * * steve-o-reeno * * ~spiderman~ * * ~superstud~ * * ~the tell-tale-hearted man~ * * Steve - The Rockin' Guitar Guy * * http://listen.to/FMGreen * * smlopez@naz.edu * ************************************************************************ * "If you can't keep it clean, keep it green." * * FMGreen Online * * http://i.am/FMGreen * ************************************************************************ * "i'm a music major, i dont have time to deal with your crap." ----me * ************************************************************************ ************************************************************************ * mary is a rad friend. ----me * ************************************************************************ * "grammar sucks!" ----melissa & me * ************************************************************************ * "a composer is a guy who goes around forcing his will on * * unsuspecting air molecules, often with the assistance * * of unsuspecting musicians." ----frank zappa * ************************************************************************ * "farewell, and may the forces of evil become confused on the way to * * your home." ----george carlin * ************************************************************************ * "reverb is bad for the kids." ----matt sharp * ************************************************************************ * "nothin's cool nothin' matters...." * * ----john davis (superdrag) * ************************************************************************ * "it will be tough, but i'm invincible: i'm wearing a weezer shirt" * * ----rhiannon * ************************************************************************ * "i'll bring home the turkey if you bring home the bacon!" * * ----rivers cuomo (god) * * * * RRRR O CC K K * * R R O O C K K * * R R O O C K K * * RRR O O C KK * * R R O O C K K * * R R O O C K K * * R R O CC K K * * * * \\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////// * * \ \ / / * * \ \ / / * * \ \ / / * * \\\\\\\\\\\\ \ / //////////// * * \ \ /\ / / * * \ \ / \ / / * * \ \/ /\ \/ / * * \ / \ / * * \/ \/ * * * * M M U U SSSS IIIIIII CC * * MM MM U U S I C * * M M M M U U S I C * * M M M U U SS I C * * M M U U S I C * * M M U U S I C * * M M UUU SSSS IIIIIII CC * ************************************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 21:23:54 -0400 (EDT) From: "Julian C. The Toronto-based singer/songwriter will be in costume for her gig tonight at Lee's Palace. And she also aims to transform the club's characteristically utilitarian interior into something befitting a theme park for sprites and cherubs. "It will have a Tim Burton meets A Midsummer Night's Dream feeling," says Slean, whose usual drums, guitar and bass accompaniment will be augmented by violin and cello for the Lee's set. "I've carved all these bugs out of foam, tied feathers to chicken wire and done all this Chinese lantern stage lighting. And I'm getting my hair done to look all insane." The fanciful spirit of the evening corresponds with the tenor of Slean's new album, due out early next year and tentatively titled Night Bugs. The 11-song CD of piano-driven numbers has been in the can for more than half a year. But Slean's label, Warner/Atlantic, decided to hold off on its release, electing instead to tease prospective listeners this past July with a sample EP that features three of the new songs, as well as two tunes from each of the 24-year-old's previous, independent albums. Part of the thinking, Slean says, was to capitalize on her acting appearance, as a lounge singer, in the Fox TV series Murder In Small Town X, which also began airing in July. "I was in it for maybe two seconds," says Slean, clearly unimpressed by the scheme's career-launching potential. "It's a horrible show." That she offers this observation with audible amusement inher voice testifies to Slean's upbeat equanimity these days - a contrast, she says, from the melancholy vibe of her 1999 disc, Blue Parade. "I just wanted to get back to jumping around and nearly dying of joy when I'm on stage. It is so much more fun to make music that way. I'm having the time of my life right now." It's an outlook she hopes doesn't dissipate before the new album comes out. "I finished mastering it in April, so I've pretty much been waiting for it to happen all this year. I'm dying for it to come out. "This happens with all musicians. You make something, you finish it and it's this huge cathartic release. You're so happy. And all you want to do is play it. Then you have to wait. And in the meantime you're writing new songs, you're changing as a person, you're meeting new people and then you have to go on tour and play the songs you wrote three years ago." [ Julian C.
