I think this has been a FANTASTIC year for albums. It all depends on your musical tastes, but here are a few of my favorites of 2001. *Radiohead -- Amnesiac I'm a Tori Amos and Radiohead girl, so this is definitely a good album year. "Amnesiac" is brilliant, very much a sister album to "Kid A" (which is just _it_ for me). *Tori Amos -- Strange Little Girls I was lucky enough to get a copy of this tonight and it is phenomenal. '97 Bonnie & Clyde is chilling. Those who like to pigeonhole Tori into the "girl and piano" role will most likely be disappointed as "Time" and "Real Men" are the only tracks that are purely bosendorfer and vocals. I don't want to say much more about the record until more people get it. I was listening to Grandaddy's cover of 10cc's "I'm Not In Love" off of The Windfall Varietal earlier today forgetting it was on Strange Little Girls, interesting to hear two different takes on the song. *Emm Gryner -- Girl Versions If you're not an Emm Gryner fan, you should be. Girl Versions is an AMAZING collection of covers that came out in August. All done on piano with the perfect amount of cello. She puts a completely different spin on these songs. I can not say enough good things about this album. GO BUY IT NOW. You can download Emm's version of Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" at umbrellamusic.com. www.emmgryner.com *Sigur Ros -- Agaetis byrjun FINALLY released in the US this year. "Sweeping majestic beauty" isn't even an apt description. *The Beta Band -- Hot Shots II I love this album. Very Beta Band like, only on a whole new level. *Danny Michel -- in the belly of a whale Very good record, but I think Fibsville is still my favorite. www.dannymichel.com *Rufus Wainwright -- Poses *Shea Seger -- the may street project A somewhat promising debut. "Last Time" is my favorite track. Ron Sexsmith sings on "Always." *Powderfinger -- Odyssey Number Five Another import finally released in the states this year. Good ol' anthem rock. Very enjoyable. And of course Ms. Slean's EP. I'm sure there are other albums that I'm forgetting... The most frustrating thing for me is that I can never afford to buy all the cds I want. Oh well. Some day. I'm going to have to break down and get Bjork's latest very soon. hope you're all hanging in there tonight, Elizabeth _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 01:28:01 -0400 From: "Elizabeth Weber" Subject: Re: OT: Recent Albums >*Tori Amos -- Strange Little Girls >... Michelle is great, and her album is a refreshing change for other artists who have dominated the radio recently. Speaking of Plumb, there is a lot of talk about how "Everywhere" closely resembles Plumb's "Stranded" in both melody and music... I think it's all coincidental. But I've played both on guitar and they are similiar. Michelle is also super nice and supportive (ie: out of the blue she emailed me to tell me she likes my site and music and this is after she was signed. I thought that was pretty nice!) Haven't received the Slean Zine but we moved recently so maybe it is in transit... I think I changed my address on the website but I can't remember now... jess, who just got more bad news this a.m., answering the phone isn't so fun anymore :~( www.jessicaweiser.com "i need to be living life not to flicker but to shine" -brenda weiler ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 03:18:55 -0400 From: "Michael R. Abram" Subject: Re: Disappointments, Radiohead, and Aeone Let me agree with Gina that I've been somewhat underwhelmed by some of the recent work of some of my favorite artists, but not by Radiohead. The CDs that have been getting the most play in my players the last few months have been Kid A, Amnesiac, and The Bends. It didn't hurt seeing them play live last month -- let me amend that, it did hurt my back, legs, and feet horribly having to stand for four hours, but it was worth it. They are the sound of the 21st century. Also in heavy rotation are Tori's live TVAB disk and a wonderful find from www.mp3.com/aeone. Aeone (AY-OWN, but she's A-1 with me) has a sound that seems an amalgam of Kate Bush, Loreena McKennitt, and Delerium, with Uilleann bagpipes, mandolins, Mellotronesque chorus (she created a sample set of her voice singing "ahhh") and drum loops thrown in for good measure. Her lyrics are Celtic/New Age/Lilithfem (hey, I went to 3 LFs) and full of emotion. I've already ranted about her on the LoveHounds list, to mixed response. Please check her out, starting with her sexy eponymous cut "Aeone (Celtic)". Also listen to "The Woman's Touch", a catchy number, and to "The Lost Art Of Crying", mislabeled on the webpage as "Deliverance ('The Messenger' Trailer)". Aeone has been getting work doing movie music, including the trailer for Milla's Joan of Arc movie, but that's not what you'll hear. And let me know if you like her or not, please! I've bought and given away a bunch of her CDs, but she hasn't given me a commission (yet). ;-) I'd put her work above that unlistenable "Day Without Rain" from Enya any day. Yeah, yeah, them's fighting words, I know. But, if all you know is "Criminal", go buy her second album "When the Pawn..." Wow.) - -Bernard Butler (especially "People Move On") - -Rufus Wainwright (both albums rule!) - -Martha Wainwright (self titled EP is great but see her LIVE. One of my favourite female voices in music today. stunning. Rufus's equally talented younger sister) - -Joseph Arthur (especially "Come to Where I'm From") - -Jason Falkner (especially "Author Unknown") - -Jellyfish ("Spilt Milk"-my favourite album in high school) - -Juliana Hatfield (I don't think she's brilliant but I do think there's no one like her) - -Radiohead (particularly "OK Computer"--it's a bad idea to start getting into Radiohead with their latest two discs) - -Hooverphonic's album "The Magnificent Tree" I could go on, but I won't. That would be annoying, and besides...these are the main ones (I stuck to mostly modern artists because I think it's important to appreciate them and not get stuck in, you know...'the past stuff is the best'...even if it's true. :)) I guess I listed them just to get people talking...I have favourites I haven't heard mentioned yet, and I think it's interesting how fans of one artist (i.e. Sarah) can be fans of such varying other types of music.
