Dunn" Subject: quick show notes Just a few notes about tonight's show before I head off to bed (and doing so is much overdue, as you can tell from the time of this message): Howie Beck: great songwriter, very mellow. Anyone have his CD? I'm curious to know if there are accompanying musicians on it, because while he is good, I felt that it would have been nice to hear some of the songs with accompanying instrumentation. SARAH: It's been quite a while since I last saw her, and I think in the intervening time she's made her live performances very polished. One could argue that this is both good and bad, because I think she's lost a bit of the spontaneity she used to have as far as chatting between songs is concerned, for example. However, I think that the arrangements of the songs are very tight, and she has definitely perfected many of the songs where it's just her and the piano. High points for me (no pun intended for those of you who saw me standing on a set of stairs :) ) were hearing the new songs, particularly 'Bank Accounts' which I'd been dying to hear (and I wasn't disappointed). "Duncan" was probably my favourite number -- it was very moving and I haven't felt that way about a song in a long time. Off to bed for me now. Sorry I won't be there tomorrow, but I have a lot of SQL queries to write for class :-( - - Julian - -- Julian C. It's been stuck in my head since the first time I heard it (last august)! She sang 'Last Year's War' on the 23 of Feb, which I'd heard only in mp3 form previous to that. I was SO thrilled when she started introducing the song with "which has a military theme". I knew exactly what she was talking about. I adore that song. She also played "Everything by the Gallon", which I really liked, as well. I got my hands on recordings of both the shows I attened, so now I'm in heaven. ;) I did notice, Julian, that the more recent show was more polished sounding... she sounded more confident, almost. She did have a band behind her this time, but even so, when she played by herself for a while, she just seemed like she was more comfortable doing what she was doing... The august show was horrible in that everyone was talking the WHOLE time. It was awful. She said a few times sweetly before she went into a story, "Listen up." or "I want you all to listen, now..." She wasn't demanding it... she said it in a way that sounded like she was starting off a conversation, but if you were really paying attention you could tell she wanted them to stop being so loud. Now people are giving her their attention when she sings, which is great. I have a feeling that this new album is going to make her big. So I'm gonna try to get to as many of those intimate coffeehouse shows as I can while I've got the chance! :D - -tara - ------------------------------------------------------------ [this message was transmitted by muted mail] http://muted.com/mail ------------------------------ End of navy-soup-digest V4 #30 ******************************
