Hi all, This is a bit of a cross-post, but I'm just so excited I had to tell everyone I'm on mailing lists with (Some of you will be getting this message numerous times. Apologies in advance). I am finally a published author. My independent debut novel "Joy of Life" is now available through Buy Books On The Web. There is a short summary and sample from Chapter 3 on their website (http://www.buybooksontheweb.com). The characters, from little Eileen Delaney to "Uncle" Phelim Connolly, are some of the strongest I've written and I am quite proud of what I have accomplished with "Joy of Life". As for the Emm, Sarah & Sarah content...My writing is heavily influenced by the music I listen to ("Joy of Life" is dedicated to Tara MacLean, Jess Weiser, Gaelic Storm & Queen). The music of Emm Gryner, Sarah Slean & Sarah McLachlan has made an impact throughout the progress of this novel, though perhaps in a more general sense than Tara or Gaelic Storm (the pub band *is* based on the latter). Short synopsis: What begins as a battlefield love story between a young spy, Adia Lohan, and a young officer, Trenton Taylor, soon gives way to a sometimes tragic, sometimes inspiring story of living in a family of expatriates and orphans of circumstance drawn together by a common love for music and concern for each other. Set to the tune of both solemn and lively Irish music, the journey of the Connolly's family from near anonymity at a busy New York City pub to the center of a small Maryland town is the story of surviving the loss, joy, love, friendship, hatred, and fun of life in an attempt to find their true place in the world. It was amazing. she played many songs I didn't know - I own both Universe & Blueparade. I suppose they are future album songs, or songs she just hasn't had a chance to release yet. One of them was very cute - "Bank Accounts... in A flat major!" And at one point towards the start of the show, she said that she told herself that she would try to write a tune before every performance, and then she would go out & sing it. So she did, and I believe she sang it a capella. It was quite lovely! Her performace was very entertaining. In between some of her lyrics she would throw in little comments like... "'Playing cards with judas, in the lounge of our hotel.. I ask what we're playing, if he likes it there in hell' - I don't believe he would, no!..." Or "'There are two drinks on the table' - Preferably scotch!..." It was pretty amusing! I got some great pictures, I think. Milestones didn't care if we used flashes. So of course I had to get my share of shots in. I cant wait to get them developed. If I find a way to scan them, I'll send them to the list, or something. Then, the best part of the night... I met Sarah. She is so awesome, so down to earth... We were chatting a little about the show, etc etc, I was wearing my Sarah Slean shirt I'd just bought and she was like, "Ooh hey, nice shirt!" She's amazing, and I am permenently hooked. :D I forgot to get her to sign something though, I feel stupid now... but hopefully I will have another chance. =) Was anyone on navy-soup at the show last night? I saw a few people singing along with the songs, and at one point when sarah was talking about what song to do, someone shouted out, "RADIOHEAD!!" So I know some fans were there... :D anyway, I the show was a blast, and definitely worth the &6, plus $2 service charge and two large red X's on my hands. Also attending with me was another navy-souper, Kathy. My one beef with Milestones is how small it is, and because of that, how loud the bar seems... I was 13' from the stage, and there were times I had to concentrate to hear the music. I also really liked the opener, Hocksley Workman. Sarah and he did a duet on "Duncan," and it was amazing. Oh, the harmony... ;-) - -- - -- - --- AdamL. alynch@sprawl.net http://sprawl.net Any view of the universe that is not strange is false. -Neil Gaiman Perfection is what we achieve when we lower our standards. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 18:43:21 -0700 From: "tara dean" Subject: Re: Sarah Slean Live Oh cool! I was sitting up on that unused bar counter to the left of the stage, so I had a great view! It was funny because my friend had the idea, but I didn't want the owners to yell at me. But when I was pissed off enough about not being able to see, I risked it and hopped up there... then once people noticed that the owners didn't care, a few others hopped up with me. Ah, the life of a trend-setter is a tough one, indeed. ;) I agree with you about the noise. I was actually having this conversation last night with an online friend of mine. She deserves a more respectable environment, for sure. When I was talking to Sarah, we brought this up too.. asked her about performing at Milestones, etc. She said that she enjoys it, and she's performed there 5 times before.. I only knew of one before last night. It does seem like a fun & casual time, but I think she would do better in a nicer environment. Sarah did a duet with him? I got there a little late, and I missed half of his show. I guess I missed it. :( - -Tara > Yep, I was. Just got back from the Northampton Folk Festival, where Sarah, Tory Cassis and Sarah Harmer were the "Canadian Showcase", both on the main stage and the side stage later on in the afternoon. (Oh yeah, and some nobodys like Patty Larkin, Vance Gilbert, Cheryl Wheeler, John Gorka, Melissa Ferrick, and The Nields were there, too. ;) It was great to see the Sarahs play again. At the side stage we were sitting front and center, and Ms. Slean saw me and gave a big smile and wave. :) Heard two new songs: "Me I'm A Thief" and a sassy one making fun of rich Torontonians, both of which were predictably wonderful. Was happy to hear that Ms. Harmer's album will be released on Rounder Records down here in October. They're a great outfit and should help her become the household name she deserves to be. It was also great to see Heather again. Crazy Canucks like you can sit behind us any time.
